• Woody climbers can be tied to supports such as trellis and training wires

• Runner and French beans, and Sweet Corn can be sown directly into outdoor seed beds

• Shading should be applied to greenhouses

• Now is the time to put grow through frames and supports into place for leggy herbaceous plants.

• As they start to shoot above ground begin to earth up potatoes.

• Begin to tie sweet peas into their supports

• Evergreen hedges should be clipped.

• Adult lily beetles are easy to spot as they are pillar box red, you must begin to watch out for these.

• Keep an eye out for the first infestations of aphids as well as checking roses for the first signs of blackspot and mildew.

• During these warmer months there are endless tasks to keep you busy in your garden.

• Roses should be sprayed to protect them from pests, you may also wish to feed them with a rose fertilizer.

• Support frames may need to be built around delphiniums and peonies.

• Old tattered leaves should be trimmed away on evergreen ferns to allow new ones to come through. • A layer of composted bark or garden mulch helps to return moisture and provide nourishment to soil.

• Plant out sprouted dahlia tubers 4-6 inches deep – put the stake first to avoid damage to the tuber.

• Polyanthus and primroses can be split to produce more plants next year. Newly planted shrubs and flowers should be watered regularly with rainwater from a water buff when possible.

Unlike flowers, foliage is not transient and will

last throughout the growing season and, in many cases, give you a stunning autumn display. So, my advice is, when purchasing shrubs at

your local garden centre or nursery, always think about what will enhance the flowering display of any shrub or herbaceous plant you may be

considering.”
