Gardening 101
Gardening has been growing in popularity the last several years. With more people becoming interested in gardening unit staff has developed a presentation titled Gardening 101. The presentation is geared towards people with little to no gardening knowledge/experience; however it is also a good refresher for more seasoned gardeners. The presentation covers the basics of vegetable gardening:
What plants need to grow
Where to locate a garden
How to determine what type of soil you have and conducting a soil test
Choosing the type of garden you want
How to build and prep your garden
Choosing plants
Planting the garden
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the garden
The presentation was recently offered at three different locations within the unit. 94% of the
participants that filled out evaluations said they plan on using some of the knowledge they gained for
the presentation in their gardens at home. Some of the information they plan on using includes:
building a raised vegetable garden, starting their first vegetable garden, and rotating their crops.
