PREPARATIONSand your surface if needed. Wipe any residue off with the tack cloth.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSBase coat the Bistro signboard with Soft Sage. Re-peat as needed. Allow to dry and spatter Lamp Black. Wash the board with thinned Traditional Burnt Um-ber. Wipe off any excess paint and allow to dry. Using your preferred stamps or stencil, apply some designs in about 4 places. I used Lamp Black. Place them so that parts will peek out under some of the tags, and also fall off of the edge in a couple of places. The stamp designs are mostly for added interest to your background. You can see that some of mine aren’t clear. Perfection isn’t needed here.

TagsYou can purchase offi ce tags or cut your own from cardstock. If you’ve cut your own, then punch a ¼ inch hole in the top for hanging. Base coat the tags Lamp Black. Repeat as needed. When dry, spatter with Soft Sage, and then just a little Warm White. Trace designs on tags using Graphite Paper and Trac-ing Paper.

Sun FaceStarting at the top of his head painting Banana Cream. As you move down, pick up Golden Straw, and Marigold as you get to the bottom. Paint these wet into wet blending one color into the next as you go. Repeat as needed. When you have a nice solid color for the sun, then fl oat Honey Brown along the lower area. Float Honey Brown for the eyebrows. Add Traditional Burnt Umber linework over the eyebrows. Float Honey Brown to defi ne the nose. Float Banana Cream on the nose. Sideload your brush in Dark Chocolate and fl oat in for the eyes. Without cleaning your brush, pick up Lamp Black and fl oat over the Dark Chocolate but not covering it completely. Add Warm White highlight dots. Dry brush the cheeks and lower lip using Terra Coral. The smile line is Lamp Black. Add stars, splotches, and spatters around the face using your yellows, and also Honey Brown. All of these look better if you just dirty brush them.

Carrot TagBasecoat the background following the basic tag instructions. Start basecoat-ing the carrots Pumpkin, but where you get close to a highlight area, begin picking up Orange Twist, and blend slightly. Float Georgia Clay for shading. Paint the white area of their eyes Warm White. Form the eye lid by fl oating Georgia Clay on one side of the eyelid. Highlight the opposite side by fl oating Orange Twist. Float Georgia Clay on the outside of the eye lid next to the highlighted side. The pupil and lashes are Lamp Black. Add Lamp Black line work to the shaded side of the eye. Add Warm White highlights to each eye. Form the nose by fl oating Georgia Clay. Highlight Orange Twist. The smile line is Lamp Black. Float Georgia Clay over the cheek and under the lower lip. Highlight the upper lip with Orange Twist. Add extra splotches to the car-rots and add random dots using your oranges. Add extra Orange Twist dots at the top of the carrots. The greens are splotches of Hauser Medium Green. Shade Plantation Pine on the lower area just above the carrot tops. Add Foliage Green dots on top.

Sunfl ower TagFollow the basic background instruc-tions for the tag. The sunfl ower petals are basecoated Golden Straw. Repeat as needed. Highlight the tips Banana Cream. Shade next to the center with Honey Brown. The center of the sun-fl ower is Camel at the top moving into Honey Brown in the center and Dark Chocolate at the bottom. Tap a little Orange Twist on the top area, and then tap Traditional Burnt Umber on the lower area. Tap just a little Pumpkin in the middle area. To paint the bee hive, start painting Camel at the top, moving into Honey Brown in the center and into Terra Cotta, and then Dark Chocolate at the bottom. Repeat as needed blend-ing your colors into each other so you get a graduation of colors. Float Dark Chocolate to separate the layers. The opening is Dark Chocolate shaded on the right with Traditional Burnt Umber. Add splotches of color over and around the bee hive using your bee hive colors. Dark over light areas, and lights over dark areas.

HEARTSBasecoat Tomato Red. Repeat as needed. Highlight one side Scarlet. Repeat. Shade the lower tip with Deep Burgundy. Float Deep Burgundy in a half circle at the lower tip for your vine to attach.

GREENSThe tendrils and stroke leaves are Haus-er Medium Green, and Foliage Green. Dirty brush these.

FINISHINGSpray the tags lightly with varnish. Spray the Bis-tro signboard a couple of times allowing to dry in between sprays.

AssemblyYou could paint these directly on the board if you wanted to, but I love painting tags. They’re such a fun accessory to things. You can add them to gifts, jars, bulletin boards, etc. I painted large thumb tacks and just stuck the tags on with them. I painted some pieces of heavy string and tied around the tacks just for added color and interest. This is a very simple and fast design to paint.
