In 1621, sixty years aer Garamond’s death (designer), the French printer Jean Jannon (1580–1635) issued a specimen of typefaces that had some characteristics similar to the Garamond designs, though his letters were more asymmetrical and irregular in slope and axis. Jannon’s types disappeared from use for about two hun-dred years, but were re-discovered in the French national printing oce in 1825, when they were wrongly attributed to Claude Garamond. eir true origin was not to be revealed until the 1927 research of Beatrice Warde. In the early 1900s, Jannon’s types were used to print a history of printing in France, which brought new attention to French typography and the “Garamond” types. is sparked the beginning of modern revivals; some based on the mistaken model from Jannon’s types, and others on the original Garamond types

Garamond’s letterforms convey a sense of uidity and consistency. Some unique characteristics are the small bowl of the a and the small eye of the e. Long extenders and top serifs have a downward slope.Garamond is considered to be among the most legible and readable serif typefaces for use in print (oine) applications. It has been noted that it uses much less ink than Times New Roman at a similar point size, a fact partially attributable to Garamond having shorter characters at the same point size compared to Times New Roman and also to Garamond's narrower stroke widths. Gara-mond, along with Times New Roman and Century Gothic, has been identied by the GSA as a "toner-ecient" font.

Claude Garamond was born in Paris, France, Garamond started his career out as an apprentice for the Parisian punch-cutter and printer, Antoine Augereau in 1510 . It was during this early part of the 16th century that Garamond and his peers found that the typography industry required unique multi-talented people. is way they could produce ne books. Many of the printers during that time period were able to master all or most of the artistic and technical skills of book production from type design to bookbinding. Claude Garamond was rst to specialize in type design, punch cutting, and type-founding in Paris as a service to many famous publishers.

Aer a decade of success with his types all over Europe, King Francois I of France demanded that Garamond produce a Greek typeface, which later became known as "Grecs du Roi". e three fonts were mod-eled aer the handwriting of Angelos Vergetios, and cut the largest size rst, on a 16 point body. All three original sets of Royal Greek punches are preserved at the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris, France

A well-spent day brings happy sleep.

e purpose of our lives is to be happy.

While there's life, there's hope.

Sadness is but a wall between two gardens.

Forgiveness is the key to action and eedom.

Good questions outrank easy answers.

Too much of good thing can be taxing.

Time is long but life is short.

Garamond’s fonts have set a milestone, on which font designers

have been recurring ever since. EB Garamond is an open source

project to create a revival of Claude Garamond’s famous humanist

typeface from the mid-16th century. Its design reproduces the

original design by Claude Garamont: e source for the letter

forms is a scan of a specimen known as the “Berner specimen”,

which, composed in 1592 by Conrad Berner, son-in-law of

Christian Egenol and his successor at the Egenol print oce,

shows Garamont’s roman and Granjon’s italic fonts at dierent

sizes. Hence the name of this project: Egenol-Berner Garamond.
