A variety of vendors such as Booker Automotive Photography, Zachary Evanish of Engel & Volkers Newport Beach, Lamborghini Newport Beach, Family Classics and many more helped make the seventh-annual Coastline Classic an extremely festive

event. The stars of the show ranged from Mike Harrah’s 1931 Rolls-Royce to an exact replica of Steve McQueen’s wicked ’68 Mustang GT used in the film “Bullitt” to the latest from Tesla and Rolls-Royce. Harrah’s Rolls took the Best of Show Award, while the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation Award was awarded to Dave and Martha Cutler for their 1954 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible.

The show was attended by roughly 120 cars and was

sponsored by Family Classic Cars and Michael F. Harrah, and benefits the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation while offering enthusiasts from all over the chance to enjoy a variety of cars ranging from Ferraris to Fords and everything in between from all vintages. The Orange County California Driving Tour kicked off the event Saturday, with participants enjoying some of OC’s greatest driving roads, ending for lunch at the Bahia Yacht Club. Sunday marked the show, emceed

by automotive enthusiasts and experts Dave Kunz and Art Gould. Attracting roughly 2,500 people, the Coastline continues to grow year after year, earning a reputation as one of the preeminent events in Southern California.

Benefitting the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California, the Capitol Concours d’Elegance weekend drew thousands of spectators and hundreds of cars. The weekend began with a Saturday morning rally that meandered through downtown Sacramento, California, and ended with an elegant dinner atop the 25th floor of a downtown high rise, and a Sunday dedicated to the Concours event.

“So much goes into an event of this caliber,” said Alan Anderson, director of development for Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California. “Thanks to a team who worked tirelessly for months.”

Capitol Concours d’Elegance Highly SuccessfulJudges scrutinized Concours entrants based on Sports

Car Club of America (SCCA) Rules, while the Ferrari Club of America Pacific Region-Sacramento Chapter gave rides to anxious passengers around a closed course for donations ranging from one-cent to $100 to support Shriners. Along the tour, various enthusiasts lined the streets with cars from early runabouts to Teslas.

In the end, a 1933 Rolls-Royce PII Convertible took the Sid Colburg Best of Show Award, while a 1956 Pegaso Z-102 Panoramica took the Bruce Grant Award, and the Honorary Judges Award went to a 1954 Kaiser Darrin.

During the October 16-17 weekend, Mecum auctioned off various vintage and special interest boats, including a number from the renowned Warner Boat Collection, selling 126-boats in all at an astonishing $4-million in total sales. The top seller of the day was a 1929 Dingle 30’ Runabout named Gerry Lo, fetching $285,000, while Sugar Lady, a 1932 Chris-Craft 27’ Runabout, achieved $275,000 and

The Antique Automobile Club of America Museum (AACA) played host to The Diecast Toy Exchange September 26 to a crowd of roughly 300 people. With vendors showcasing, selling and trading various rare and unusual Matchbox toy cars, the mood was festive and fun, with some people discovering diecast toys they’d been seeking for years, and others finally beginning to collect the cars they’d wanted to

for decades. With roughly $500,000-worth of toys on hand, the show

marks itself as one of the preeminent shows in the country for collectors and enthusiasts. The Museum frequently holds special and unique events such as this, including shows and jumbles – located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Museum has a strong collector following.

Fairfield Concours d’Elegance Hosts New Barn Find Category, and Nearly 8,000 People at September Event

The 7th annual Connecticut event drew an astonishing crowd, and a large grouping of more than 230 exceptional automobiles and motorbikes. Special exhibits this year included the 24 Hours of LeMans, and “Styled by the Wind,” a collection celebrating automotive aerodynamics, which included a 1939/47 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal Cabriolet by Labourdette, brought to the Concours by the John W. Rich Museum in Frackville, Pennsylvania. Also displayed was a collection of eight vehicles representing the coachwork of Howard “Dutch” Darrin.

The poster design was handled by noted photographer Jesse Alexander (Artist Profile, Issue 10). Special judging this year included Porsche, Bugatti, Aston Martin, Motorcycles and Barn Finds, the last category being the one Garage Style Magazine attempted to participate in with our 1949 Willys Panel Wagon discovered in a Hollywood, California backyard garage (Publisher’s Note, Issue 7). Unfortunately the vehicle was selected late by the committee and we were unable to attend. Maybe next year. Wayne Carini (Personality Profile, Issue 8), host of the Discovery Television show, “Chasing Classic Cars,” attended the event and took home the award for Best Barn Find with his 1965 SAAB, selected by Concours guests.

The coveted Grand Prix d’Honneur (Best of Show) award for a domestic vehicle was awarded to a 1940 Duesenberg

SJ. Known as the last Duesenberg, or The Bauer SJ, as it was originally owned by Rudolph Bauer, is not only the last Duesenberg built, but also represents one of only 36 factory supercharged cars, and shows only 10,000-miles from its three owner history.

The Concours also held its annual Nutmeg Tour for Autism, and the Toast the Tour fundraiser reception presented by St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation. Both raise funds to support diagnostic and treatment services for people with autism spectrum disorders.

Racing legend Bobby Rahal is slated to be the 2011 honoree, while the show will focus on vehicles from Duesenberg, Allard and Kurtis. Marking its 16th year, the legendary Concours is scheduled for March 11-13, 2011 on the 10th and 18th fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach, adjacent the Ritz Carlton Hotel.

“One of the great pleasures about Amelia is that we can honor the best of the best and Bobby Rahal certainly falls into the category,” said Bill Warner, Concours founder and co-chairman.

The show’s Foundation has donated nearly $1.7-million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc., and other charities on Florida’s First Coast since its inception in 1996.

Hot on the heels of the original 6-Pack Sampler of Liquid Wrench products in 11-ounce cans, the company is releasing another, smaller, easier-to-manage on-the-go 6-Pack with 5.5-ounce cans of their most popular products.

Complete with Penetrating Oil, Silicone Spray, White Lithium Grease, Lubricating Oil, Dry Lubricant and Chain Lubricant, the smaller canisters are easier to store, more portable and perfect for the serious DIY’er or professional. The LW products are perfect for loosening bolts, preventing rust and corrosion, coating items with heavy-duty grease, stopping squeaks, cutting down on friction and lubricating moving components among other uses. It’s like a liquid toolbox. The new kit will be sold through Lowe’s hardware stores, along with other major retailers beginning in November.

Kicking off the Monterey Automotive Festivities, Automobilia Monterey, was host to a number of unique vendors of needful things such as rare original signs, gas pumps, art, literature and much more. Held inside the Embassy Suites Hotel, the event offers out-of-the-sun fun for anyone with a penchant for collecting automobilia or Petriliana, or just wanting to be among the distinctive automotive collectibles.

“My wife and I fly out every August for the car week, and this event really puts us in the mood for everything else Monterey has to offer,” said Sid Hecht, automobilia visitor.

Automobilia Monterey Roaring SuccessAmong the vendors, Spirit of

Speed sold out of rare original early-1900’s Michelin pieces such as a clock with French scripting and Mr. Bib, a small, wall-mounted box for tools or small lubricant cans, and a Mr. Bib air compressor.

“We did ok this year,” said Manny Gorin, owner of Spirit of Speed. “We come to this event yearly and always do well. It’s an enjoyable event in a wonderful venue, it really can’t be beat.”

Mark your calendars for next year, August 16 and 17, 2011, and enjoy Manny’s comments on collecting automobilia in this issue’s Collectible’s section.

As if Automobilia Monterey weren’t enough, the Auto Retro festival at Pebble Beach aims to keep auto enthusiasts at the brink of insanity with row upon row of vendors selling signs, literature, neon, art and much more.

Similar to Automobilia, Retro is an indoor event, lending itself to a more comfortable, out of the weather advantage to other swap meets and flea markets. The tent, cleverly fronted with a garage motif, is host to roughly 100 vendors with new, original or restored pieces to spruce up any garage, office, den or collection. Outside, vehicle manufacturers display their latest iterations, such as Jaguar’s new XJ and Hyundai’s super luxe entry, while Cadillac, Lotus, SAAB and others assemble entire buildings to demonstrate their cars.

Long a destination of destinations for memorabilia, automobilia and Petriliana collectors, dealers and fun seekers, Retromobile at the Porte de Versailles in Paris returns with a Bonhams auction. Anticipating over 300 vendors, the schedule has not been fully established as of this writing, but January is the dedicated month.

Bonhams expects another fascinating lineup of rare and unique automotive offerings, and will complement the Retromobile Salon with the sale of automobilia. The 2010 event featured such rare offerings as the famous Bugatti ‘Lake Car,’ or the Type 22 Brescia, which was resurrected from Lake Maggiore in Switzerland in 2009 having been submerged there since 1936, the tragic result of duties owed.

Celebrating its 28th year, the Literature, Toy/Model and Memorabilia Meet for Porsche and Vintage VW will be held at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton. Taking over the International and Pacifi c Ballrooms on the main level, over 200 well-spaced vendors will be on hand dispensing innumerous rare, unusual and exciting Porsche-VW items. March 6, the fun moves to the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, California for the SoCal All Porsche Swap and Car Display. The event will engross 11,500-square feet of space, with exceptional vehicles and vendors inside and out.

Office Profile of: Brian MatterName of photographer: Brian MatterOccupation: Building Materials Representative Location: Milwaukee, WI Setting: My home office is a very comfortable, functional and well organized work space. I spend about 5-10 hours a week here getting caught up on office work that I can’t seem to find time for in my main office.

I love the atmosphere of my home office. The walls are covered with vintage hot rod, motorcycle and custom culture paraphernalia. I love collecting vintage and custom painted helmets and right now I have about 120 helmets in my collection. Custom creations by noted artists and pinstripers such as David Boensch, Shawn Long, Chris Laurin, Jaymes Schmidt and Josh Scott add a ton of color and visual excitement to the space. Upon entering my office, visitors can be somewhat overwhelmed by the shear number of helmets on display and the incredible variety of colors, finishes and detail they provide. There is certainly plenty to look at…

Features: I put my architectural background to work and designed the office space. It was a fairly simple project so I also handled the construction. The walls are clad with galvanized corrugated steel paneling and 1 x 6 Tongue-and-Groove pine painted a soft, light green with cream colored trim. The term carriage house dates back a couple centuries, referring to an outbuilding in which the horses lived with

the carriages. Reserved primarily for wealthier families back in the day, the carriage house today carries with it a romantic notion of refinement and sophistication above and beyond the common garage, a smaller, more popular outbuilding itself that began gaining notoriety around 1915,

about the same time the automobile had established itself as the popular mode of transport in larger towns and cities. Prior to about 1905, though, with most automobiles being purchased by wealthier individuals, people began replacing their carriages with automobiles, and parking them right next to the horse, in the carriage house.

Today, the carriage house is still the grand dame of

22 Garage Style Magazine Winter 2010

A carriage house is a rare but exceptionally elegant way to house your cars.

garages. In traditional fashion, they stand alone, away from the main house, sheltering the transportation in a building complementary of the home, reflecting the owner’s tasteful manners. In most instances, the horses have been removed. Back in the day, it was truly something special to have a carriage house, and nothing has changed. One such purpose-built carriage house is in New England,

and home to a host of desirable European vintages from Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes and Morgan, to name a few. The owner wanted a distinctive flair for his coach house, dividing the two floors almost bluntly in appearance and feel, the first floor being dedicated heavily to all-things-car, the second floor resembling more of a traditional English gentleman’s club, with tasteful and careful use of art, a

When thoughts of Iowa come to people’s minds the last thing one might think of is muscle cars, but Doug

Klein is trying to change that. Doug is the owner of Ameri-can Dream Machines, an ultimate superstore of all things muscle car. Doug set out eight years ago with the idea that buying and selling nostalgic cars would be a fun little retire-ment venture to keep him busy. Little did he know that his “little side project” would fast become a full time occupation that would keep him busier now than ever before.

American Dream Machine’s current home is in a

historical 1940’s Packard dealership, right in the heart of downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The dealership provides Doug and his crew enough space not only to show all of their latest acquisitions, but it also allows them access to a service bay, detail area, body shop, wheel and tire showroom, exercise area, break room, billiards lounge, and plenty of storage space for all the spare parts that one could dream of.

What really takes this from being just another dealer-ship and turns it into something more is the atmosphere

Meeting Brad was like meeting an onion – there are a lot of layers to get through before you think you’ve discovered what you came

looking for, and then you discover more. The warehouse featured here is one of a small collection of warehouses around the city he lives in, each building toward an ultimate goal, a museum. As if this one were not museum-esque enough, Brad has bigger plans.

Growing up, Brad loved motorcycles. His dad, Bud, on the other hand, was a consummate hot rod guy. Together they built a few rods and had some laughs, which broadened Brad’s motoring appreciation. Having formed a company, Bud put him to work, and the company grew, and more work was to be had, but with the success came more opportunities to build more vehicles. Brad took on big rigs, dually trucks, massive speedboats, and, of course, motorcycles. Lots of them. But, he began appreciating hot rods just about as much as Bud.

Brad has intermingled vintage gas pumps to add historical allure.

Garages in History232 Santa Margarita Ave.

Google Garage

However you look at it garages were, and are, built to store

stuff. To readers of this journal the stuff that we store is cars, or car-related stuff.

But this historical garage was used to develop a system to store other stuff.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin were twenty-somethings that understood and appreciated the need to store information and knowledge. Lots of it. In fact, all of it. These two young Stanford University grad students were interested in storing web pages from the Internet. Billions of them. Today, it’s the world’s largest index of web pages, a library of knowledge at your fingertips, information in nanoseconds.

And we thought the Bugatti Veyron was quick.

Back in 1995 the two grad students began collaborating on developing an Internet search engine (the same kind of search engine that GSM readers use to locate tail lights for their Sabra or brake shoe rivets for their Pung’s Finch). Originally called the “BackRub” search engine they decided on a new name, Google. Derived from a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros; which is about how much money they could now blow at the auctions during August in Monterey. The name reflected their goal of corralling a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.

But, ideas are ideas – they needed a place to get started (after all, you need a good size place to store every bit of information in the world) and through a friend of a girl dating Brin they leased a garage from Susan Wojcicki. Susan used the $1,700 a month fee to pay off her mortgage. Susan must have had incredible insight, as she is now Google’s vice president of product management.

During Google’s five month history in the garage, it became like a second home for Page and Brin. Google’s official story behind the garage provides a great picture of the early years for the two dreamers:

“In September, 1998, Google Inc. opened its door in

tExt by

googlE

Menlo Park, California. The door came with a remote control, as it was attached to the garage of a friend who sublet space to the new corporation’s staff of three. The office offered several big advantages, including a washer and dryer, and a hot tub. It also provided a parking space for the first employee hired by the new company.”

A few years ago, Google purchased the home and garage it so humbly started out in, but has not disclosed the purchase price, or what Google specifically aims to do with it. According to Google spokesman, Jon Murchinson, they plan, “to preserve the property as a part of our living legacy.” Good idea.

One of the perks the garage provided was the close proximity to Susan’s refrigerator, which they raided periodically. This “access” to free munchies may have been the impetus to Google’s providing a smorgasbord of free food to the 8,000 employees on its payroll. The garage has become a Mecca of sorts for fans of the company and busloads of “Google groupies” descend on the house to pay homage to the visionaries. As garages go, this one is truly legendary.

In the end, Larry and Sergey did well in the storage business. GSM

News of the 1933 Delage D8S roadster with a one-off body by de Vilars that took the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours

stunned the judges and the crowd alike with its exquisite details and fascinating engineering. Just the fact that it was nearly monochromatic white was amazing.

“A lot of people were telling me to paint it black or dark blue, to make the chrome and other elements stand out a little

Best of Show Garagebetter, but the car was white originally, and we wanted to stick with how it was when it was new,” said Jim Patterson, owner of the car. “As the restoration proceeded we kept getting bonus on top of bonus.”

While a lot of press has been given to Best of Show winners at major concours events around the globe, very little (maybe none?) is granted to the space in which the vehicles are kept. Garage Style, in conjunction with Zymol Wax Company, wanted to break that trend, and begin a new tradition in celebrating and showcasing the stables of the Best of Show winners.

“Our garage took about a year to build, and we designed it for easy access,” said Jim. “So many garages required

movement of other cars to get another in or out, and we didn’t want to have to worry about that.”

As such, the Pattersons elected an elongated, rectangle shaped garage which would allow for vehicle placement along both walls, and a drive space down the center. An all-steel structure, from the outside it looks rather nondescript, save for a stucco façade leading to a foyer displaying various awards and stories the cars have achieved.

“Outside it doesn’t draw a lot of attention, we focused on the inside, but still didn’t want to do anything over the top with decorations. The cars are the art, and I wanted the garage to be functional and durable, but also maybe a little elegant,” Jim said.

Spirit of Speed, incorporated in France, has long provided

genuine, original Automobilia to decorate offices, garages, dens and more. The company has also provided advice to collectors about pieces they are considering purchasing, and aided collectors and investors in locating special pieces long forgotten.

somewhere to create a motoring atmosphere, and there is nothing really wrong with that,” said Manny Gorin, founder of Spirit of Speed. “But if you’re interested in actually investing in automobilia or Petriliana, there is a certain amount of knowledge that must be had in order to make smart choices. We help beginner collectors get started, and provide established collectors with additional knowledge.”

Through the years, car collectors and motoring fans have enjoyed decorating their garages, offices and dens with service station signs, gas pumps, early racing trophies, mascots, badges, neon, tin and more. In recent years, the authentic garage style movement has become more of a booming business – where once there were maybe a handful of collectors vying for various original pieces of automotive history, now there are many people interested in the investment opportunities within.

“The idea of decorating with automobile manufacturer décor is not new,” said Gorin. “But, until recently, it was normally a few people with larger garages purchasing these items. Today, it’s more than that; today, you’ve got people who like cars buying the memorabilia related to that car to decorate smaller garages and even the home itself, to celebrate a particular vehicle, or the entire industry itself. Spirit of Speed is able to help people decorate their rooms with authentic materials, lending not only to an aesthetic value, but to a real monetary investment potential.”

If you’re like most car guys, you like to keep your car at a slight distance from others, thus, avoiding door dings and other mishaps that occur. In the common two-car garage, however, it can be a trick to nuzzle your car closer to the wall, farther from “the other car.” EZovr might be the solution – drive onto the ultra-low profile aluminum ramps, get out and simply push the car to the side. Available in two ramp widths, and designed to hold up to 3,000-pounds, this “Garage Expander” rides on eight ultra-hard, high-capacity ball bearing rollers to ensure that sliding your car into a corner, and sliding it back out, is exceptionally easy. Complete with end-of-travel stops, foot activated friction pads to prevent unintended motion, oil drip

pan brackets, built-in entry ramps, adjustable length and width flexibility and a folding handle, the easy-to-use EZovr will accommodate a variety of lighter-weight cars with a wheelbase up to 102-inches. to apply the coating – gun, powder canister and instructions. Once under way, we discovered that it wasn’t an intimidating machine at all, and proved to be easy to use and handle, and very effective when the instructions were followed.

The finished product looked fantastic, and will last for years to come. While we opted for a semi-gloss black finish for the riser, Eastwood offers an abundance of colors and finishes to choose from. They also offer high-temperature coatings.

This Power Coating System is perfect for people wanting a superior coating for various jobs, and don’t want to spend the time or money on a professional to complete them. You

can do it right in your own garage, and in short time. Just make sure you properly prep the surface, read the instructions and have an electric oven in which to bake the powder. No, your kitchen stove won’t do – find an oven you’ll never use for food.

This new system allows the average do-it-yourself enthusiast

to apply a powder coated finish that rivals professional-level powder coating. While this system is more involved than just painting parts with a paint can, the longevity and durability of the end result will more than make up for the added work involved.

In order to properly powder coat an item, surface preparation is paramount to a good finish. We opted to powder coat a heat riser from a 1960’s Ford, a small enough part to be manageable for our test, but large enough to provide a decent surface area. Private Restorations and Garage Style Magazine called on Bernard Juchli, the general manager of Jay Leno’s Big Dog Garage, for some help. We needed a place to prep the surface, spray

the powder and bake the finish, and Bernard and the crew were more than accommodating, and Leno’s garage offered everything we needed. They graciously allowed us use of their spray booth, bead blaster and ultrasonic cleaner to prep and spray the part. The garage also has a good sized oven in which we were able to bake the coating to the part. This Eastwood System comes with everything needed

Renowned artists Dan McCray, Dave Snyder, Ken Eberts, Roger Blanchard, Sue Steele Thomas and Tony Sikorski helped bring the annual AACA Night at the Museum event to life with their custom-painted classic gas pumps, and, of course, their lively personalities.

Bill Warner, founder and CEO of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, hosted as emcee, while Corky Coker gave the audience a hoot with his impersonation of Teddy Roosevelt, Peter Heizmann mimicked the first AACA president Frank Abramson even wearing his original jacket, and Chuck Crane impressed people as The Shell Answer Man. Guests enjoyed food and drink, as well as art exhibits galore and full access to the museum, which was showcasing woodies.

A successful evening indeed, the next Night at the Museum event will be October 5, 2011, and proceeds go to support the museum and projects the museum is involved in to preserve history and provide knowledge to future generations.

Most readers of GSM know that the Flea Market at Hershey Pennsylvania (first week in October) is Mecca for collector

car hobbyists. While Pebble Beach and Amelia Island has their “crowd” and the LA Roadster Show has their following, Hershey has been the “melting pot” for garagistas regardless of the logos sewn on their coveralls or gold button blazers. For GSM readers there was a host of signs reflecting the Garage Style lifestyle. Here is a sampling of vintage signs from old time garages that were available to enjoy a second life on the wall of garages like your own.

Autobooks-Aerobooks has been a literary haven for transportation fanatics since 1951, and nothing has

changed. It’s here that you can probably find that one-off book about Delage that you remember seeing as a youngster, or a poster depicting a 1982 Corvette upon a sunsetting beach looking very ’80s, or the latest edition of virtually any car magazine from around the globe. It’s also a place to find unique die cast models and jewelry options outside the norm.

Garage Style Magazine covered Autobooks-Aerobooks in our second issue (Fall, 2008) giving readers a brief glimpse into a Southern California legend, and while the basic idea and core values of Autobooks-Aerobooks remains the same, a

funny thing happened.“The lease on our old building was renegotiated out of our

favor, so we began seeking a new location,” said Tina Van Curen, owner of Autobooks-Aerobooks. “As it turns out, we discovered a quaint spot just a few blocks to east – actually, the original Autobooks Burbank location, which is pretty cool.”

Looking a bit like a vintage pharmacy from the outside with its corner-situated red door and glass block surrounds, the new-old location is smaller, but livelier than the previous store.

“When we decided to find a new place, it was decided that we would also change the look of the store a little bit,” she said. “We wanted it to look more like a garage than a retail

George

Trosley

“TROZ” as he is known to his friends, has been drawing since he was a kid. Being raised in the 50’s and 60’s

it was easy for the art thing to run into the growing hot rod thing and form an odd combination of India ink and gasoline, something we now know as a Trosley drawing. George has been entertaining us with his automotive drawings for a long time. Over the years he’s been published in most car magazines both with his illustration work and his hilariously insightful cartoons that have tickled the funny bones of the hot rod community.

Back in high school, George owned a succession of cars, a ’47 Plymouth Sedan followed by a ’55 Ford Victoria with a 312 T-bird engine and trans…then a ’48 Plymouth Coupe with lots of custom touches including metallic blue paint, totally shaved trunk, ’50 Pontiac taillights and a white interior with blue accents. Finally he got his hands on a totally stock ‘39 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan and rebuilt it into a mild street machine while attending the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia. Metallic Root Beer Brown paint, a black rolled and pleated interior running a warmed fl attie with duals and a three speed on the fl oor with Lincoln Zephyr gears made this Troz’s favorite of all the rides he’s owned. He even picked up a few drag racing trophies with it.

“I love the hot rod spirit…building something yourself your own way…to me, it’s the essence of what America’s all about. It’s great putting something together just the way you want it to look and sound…I got hooked on that feeling early on by putting my ideas on paper and building them as model cars. My brother Harold had lots of natural patience and craftsmanship. I would chop, channel and section a model, molding in parts from other kits using plastic wood and he could sand and shape

them and get ‘em ready for the wild multi-colored paint jobs we would do using an air brush I’d acquired. Hobby Shop Model Car Contests were very big then and we won a lot of them…eventually being banned from most. We really didn’t mind because we were fi nally old enough to get our driver’s licenses and real cars.”

While all this was going on George’s fi res were being fed by car magazines and especially one in particular...CARtoons. “I’d been reading it since the 60’s and I’d always dreamed of being able to get some of my drawings accepted by them. After graduating from art school I landed a jobs in various art studios in Philadelphia but found the work boring

Story telling comes naturally to Jim Wangers, and why wouldn’t it? His early career was spent developing some

of the most notorious automobile advertising campaigns ever, working directly with some of the slickest, most admired men Detroit ever saw. Because of this experience, Jim will entertain visitors with industry tales and secrets – nuggets that make stories so fun, like the story of where Pontiac’s famous Verdoro Green came from, or how the Hurst-Grand Prix originated, or why so many GM vehicles had vinyl tops.

“I’ve loved cars forever, and marketing came naturally to me, I enjoyed it – I began working with Kaiser, did a couple of years with Chevrolet and then moved on to Chrysler,” he said. “Oddly, I wasn’t there too long, they had just launched the Chrysler 300 followed up with the Plymouth Fury. I thought it would be a good idea to look forward, and try to figure out what

the youth of the mid 1950’s was going to want when they were of driving age, or in early adulthood, which would be the mid to late 1960’s, Chrysler really didn’t want to go in that direction. So, I moved on.”

Moved on meaning out of work briefly, but through a series of events, he ended up in front of the head guy at Pontiac, Semon Knudsen, popularly known as Bunkie.

“At the time, Pontiac was perceived as a stodgy car, something for elderly people to drive,” he said. “GM was interested in at least losing that image, and Bunkie was interested in redefining the brand.”

Interestingly, whereas the young impressionable Wangers wanted to work for Pontiac and GM, Bunkie had other ideas. He made a call to their advertising agency, MacManus, John & Adams, and told them that he thought Jim would be beneficial

Combining excruciatingly high standards of luxury, durability, security, individuality and exclusivity is the formula for

the Knight XV by Conquest Vehicles. However, unlike most companies specializing in manufacturing hand built vehicles for a small, discerning clientele, Conquest has chosen to serve a seemingly overlooked, forgotten market, those looking for an absolute luxury vehicle with the protective instincts of a tank. Granted, this is a small segment of an already diminutive market – but if you’re the only fish in the pond, it’s a lot of pond.

Since the company introduced the Knight XV at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association tradeshow in Las

Vegas, it has made strides in vehicle development, honing in on a number of quality areas, tightening up tolerances and ensuring that the vehicle is a tank that acts more like a car, something that will serve and impress rather than frustrate and embarrass. As such, they’ve sold a number of them to well-healed captains of industry, professional athletes, government officials and royalty the world over, according to their Website.

“Our clients expect nothing less than the best and have impeccable taste when acquiring a hand-made vehicle,” said Bill Mailin, founder and CEO of Conquest Vehicles. “Aside from the robust nature inherent in the Knight XV, it boasts a

The Knight looks like a concoction from NASA to rove Mars – and it might be able to.

number of cutting-edge technologies and is constructed to the levels anticipated in one of the world’s finest vehicles.”

Like any bespoke vehicle, the Knight XV is replete with amenities. Inside, passengers revel with supple Andrew Muirhead leathers, soft suedes, well-bolstered seats, thick Wilton Wool carpeting, dual aircon, limousine-style seating in the rear, a pantheon of the latest electronics for business and pleasure, on-demand privacy glass, privacy curtains, night vision, security cameras, emergency oxygen, refreshment station, humidor and much, much more. In a way it’s like a private jet. Passengers easily conduct business, enjoy family time or simply relax as they traverse from one locale to the next.

The driver enjoys the raw power of either a 6.0-liter gas-powered V8 engine from GM, or a Cummins 6.7-liter inline-6 diesel, each with a performance option of a supercharger or diesel performance upgrade, increasing horsepower and engine performance immensely. Depress the brake pedal and 12-piston caliper brakes bite down on massive rotors to bring the 13,000-pound rolling vault to a standstill in a jiff. The Freightliner chassis is rugged enough to withstand not only the weight of the Knight XV’s body, but the demands of the powerful engine options and available four-wheel-drive while retaining an inherent stiffness for which commercial chassis

are revered.Once sealed into a Knight XV, passengers are secured

well from the outside world. The body is entirely armored against attack, including the glass, known as opaque armor. Clients can specify their individual armoring needs, ranging from B4+ (able to stop an AK-47 assault) to B7 (able to stop armor-piercing bullets), but the bottom line is simple – no

bullet shall enter the cabin and cause harm with any degree of ease. They also offer a magnetic device detector, able to sniff out anything magnetically attached to the underside of the vehicle. It

may well be the most secure ride next to the president’s limo. Even the optional divider window inside is armored glass set in an armored frame. The firewall (between the engine bay and passenger compartment) is fully sealed against bullet or actual fire attacks. Because of the excessive weight applied by the armor, the door hinges and metal surrounds of the Knight XV have been additionally reinforced to avoid fatigue and premature failure. This kind of thinking is behind every angle of every panel on the XV.

The massive Michelin XZY 385/65 R 22.5 wide-base tires are equipped with legendary Hutchinson run flat technology, reputed throughout the military to withstand mine blasts. A pothole isn’t going to stop this thing, and where so many run

flat technologies can become disconnected in blasts or rapid fire, rendering the system and the tire useless and the passengers vulnerable, serious isolation and shielding protects the Hutchinson system like no other. Truly, the Knight XV is a battle cocoon that’s at home on the boulevard or the warzone.

While the styling is arguable, the Knight XV was designed to resemble a military vehicle called the Ghurka, a legendary vehicle practically capable of withstanding a landmine blast and achieving a top speed of 150-kilometers per hour. Conquest recently moved from using a Ford chassis to the International chassis/GM drivetrain; as such, they’re not able to say just yet how quickly the Knight XV will accelerate, or what its top speed will be, but one thing’s for sure – it’s purpose-built, first-class protection on wheels.

“We believe that we have created an entirely new niche in the bespoke luxury armored vehicle marketplace with the Knight XV,” said Maizlin. “We are seeing a surge in our sales due to the unique offering of our product coupled with the fact that there

All it takes is one slip of the hand for the daily’s door to go smacking into the weekender – it’s scary and frustrating, especially when we all know there are a few feet on the other side of the weekender that can get it that much further out of harm’s way. But, without the EZovr, those elusive feet are nearly impossible to access – simply drive your vehicle upon EZovr’s adjustable ramps, exit the vehicle, and gently push the car toward the wall, out of the way. Great Winter Reading(With Spectacular Photographs)

Makes The Perfect Gift For Every Car Guy!

Can-Am Cars in DetailMachines and Minds Racing Unrestrained

Giant engines. Revolutionary aeroforms. Thunderous power, lap speeds faster than those of Formula One cars, and a freedom from regulation that today’s racers may not even be able to dream of. That was the Can-Am.

The original Canadian-American Challenge Cup series only lasted from 1966 to 1974, but what ground-shaking, carshaping years those were. With minimal rules and lavish prize money, the Can-Am attracted top-flight teams and superstar drivers from sports cars, F1, and Indy car racing. It also encouraged innovation, and for almost every round, racing’s most inventive minds brought out novel and astounding ideas.

Can-Am Cars in Detail revisits 22 of these epic machines through stunning studio photography by Peter Harholdt and vivid descriptions by Pete Lyons, long considered the dean of Can-Am journalists. Can-Am cars are beautiful blends of art and action, pinnacles of engineering and craftsmanship that express the heights of human imagination and ambition and achievement. Seen in the chronological order that they appeared at Bridgehampton, Mosport, Laguna Seca and other classic road courses, these machines invite us to join them on a journey.

Inside The Archives Jesse Alexander

These heretofore-unseen pictures illustrate a time that was unique. As the years have swept past I’ve come to appreciate how lucky I was to have been there to capture many of those moments on film.” -Jesse Alexander

For every photograph that racing fans already know and love, there are thousands more that have remained largely unseen. Inside The Archives brings the best of these rare images to light for the first time, revealing a fresh, often unexpected side of Alexander’s art and the world of cars and racing.

Regardless of the subject or setting, each of the images in Inside The Archives reflect Jesse Alexander’s unique gifts as a photographer as well as a fascination with the world or motorsports that has endured for more than half a century.

In the car hobby people are overly exposed to battery maintainers, little miracles of technology

that help people store a vehicle without the worry of the battery going completely flat. Some work well, most work only for a period of time, while a number of them simply let the battery die a slower-than-average death. Frank Gabrielli of Granite Digital had a better plan.

“I am a car guy through and through, and I was always interested in technology, which led me to found Granite as a company specializing in data storage and retrieval,” said Frank. “It always irked me when I would use a battery maintaining system only to learn that the battery had gone flat. Why did I spend the money on the system? And then it irked me that the battery had to be sent out to a recycler, or worse, thrown away – always one to look after the environment, I saw that as a bad, bad thing.”

With this in mind, Frank set out to create one of the world’s finest battery maintainers, one that would not only send a basic charge through the plates and acids, but that would actually put loads on the battery to make it work; a maintainer that would use electricity to properly clean the plates and battery internals to keep junk from building up and shortening its life. To boot, while all this is going on inside the battery, the owner of the vehicle has the benefit of a clean, clear set of LEDs and an LCD display to understand everything going on within. The idea was simple – make a maintainer that would be easy to live with, and actually maintain a battery, not just keep an electrical charge buzzing through it. His vision became known as the Save-A-Battery by Granite Digital, and has been making a steady sweep around the globe as the maintainer to have.

“We hit a lot of events every year, and at these events we just blow them away with what our technology can do,” he said. “We’ve had guys come to us and say, ‘What’s the difference between your maintainer and those other maintainers?’ and when we start laying everything out, they’re a little slack jawed.”

But development didn’t stop there – Frank and his Granite crew moved forward, designing and engineering more ingenuitive maintainers and monitors, as well as ways to permanently affix the maintainer plugs and clamps to the vehicles so that they’re all but invisible.

“One of the first steps we took was to serve the Concours circuit crowd, the people who compete on a high level of expertise and quality with their vintage and classic cars,” he said. “These people store cars and when a show comes up, they need to

Frank and Leah Gabrielli enjoy many concours events.

SAB is revolutionary and performs on a number of batteries.

Issue11.indd 74 11/27/10 3:34 PM

Page 46: Garage Style Magazine Winter 2010/11

be able to have that car up and running efficiently. Importantly too, many Concours shows are becoming driving events, owners having to prove that their cars work and can perform in a specific route, which makes it even more important to have a good, healthy battery. People can install our maintainers in their

garages and install the port that attaches to the battery on the car very discreetly. We’ve had a few clients call up and let us know that they’d just had their vehicles at the such-n-such Concours d’Elegance, and that

they’d left the plug-in port installed on the car, wired up to the battery, ready to be plugged back in, and no one ever knew.”

Frank says he really enjoys helping with this type of reconnaissance work because he knows everyone wants to maintain their batteries, it only makes sense, but not everyone wants a hood up in the garage, big box on the ground, wires running to the wall plug. He also knows Concours judges despise anything on a car outside of the factory’s intension.

“Even if it’s for the health of the car, they don’t care,” he said. “These judges want things to be perfect and to be honest, I don’t blame them – they’re preserving and honoring history with these cars, and I think we all want our cars to be as good as they can be. But, I happen to agree with a lot of my clients – the mess some of these other maintainers can create in the garage is insane – why not have a simple plug installed on the car, in an extremely concealed manner, attached to the battery that allows the owner to pull into the garage and plug into the wall?”

It was a well-received idea from various automobile owners and collectors, allowing them to maintain their batteries and the appearance in their garages with a degree of ease. Admittedly, there is a bit of an initial investment involved in purchasing and installing the maintainers in the garage, and wiring up the car itself; but, like any project worth partaking in, the investment is worth the long-term benefit.

It also fed more ideas to Granite Digital.“A lot of these cars run on the old 6-volt system, and we

had a large demand for maintainers that would work with that system, so we designed a maintainer for the 6-volt, and just recently brought them to market,” he said. “We also had a few questions from Ferrari owners who wanted maintainers that were branded with Ferrari logos, so we worked with Ferrari to create those, and now, we have the Smart Cables, the Solar

Maintainer and a few additional items that will debut at the SEMA Show this fall.”

Like any great company, Granite Digital presses on, improving its’ designs and ideas, and giving clients reasons to try out their product.

“We’ve elected to begin a trade-in program,” he said. “People who have invested in other maintainers, who might want to try the Save-A-Battery product, are welcome to trade their old maintainer in on a new Save-A-Battery.”

Granite Digital’s trade-in program allows people to send in their old maintainer, take
