THE SPINI thought a portrait of a motocross photographer could be very well represnted through the creative use of silhouette. The distinct outline of a camera, in combination with the natural, grassy elements of the earth, spoke with a ringing clarity to me, and I had to portray this ex-citing revelation through my chosen medium, my smartphone camera.

The TruthI don’t know how to work my smart phone camera, and this ugly photo was one of several shot while I was trying to figure out how to turn it on. I actually wanted to take photos of the race results, which were hanging on a sign board right in front of me.

Symbiosis I sometimes joke around with riders that have

had a good day at the track, that their riding makes it really easy for me to come across as

a pretty good photographer. It is a light-hearted conversation starter to let that person know that their hard work and sacrifice off the track is evi-dent to those watching from off the track, and this intensity actually does come across in the photos I shoot. While it also takes a bit of planning to get a great shot, sometimes, motocross racing pho-tography just involves pulling the trigger and hop-ing for the best! Usually the hoping for the best part centers on the camera’s autofocus system keeping pace with the speed which the riders are going. Lots of times the autofocus doesn’t keep up, or it “gets distracted” in the middle of a se-ries of shots. It is a bit easier shooting a prac-tice session, but in racing, the workflow is very different and constantly changing. Regardless of the venue, the relationship between motocross racers and photographers is symbiotic, that is, mutually beneficial; riders rely on great photos to create memories of events, celebrate their ac-complishments, and to portray their talents to potential sponsors. Photographers, especially those marketing themselves as having a special-ty in MX (or sports generally) need riders to help them portray their photographic talents by cap-turing that decisive moment. Over the past three races, I have seen no shortage of great opportu-nities for photographers to take incredible pho-tos. And, some of the feedback I have received, is that others appreciate my photos too. I feel very flattered about this, as my day job is very far re-moved from MX, photography, writing or publish-ing. So, I am glad to be a part of the action, even if it is off the track. What I have noticed though, particularly at the last round in Kamloops, is that I am getting some recognition that I really don’t want. The type of recognition that I am referring to is when riders look at me while racing on the track. I would like to kindly ask all racers, and parents of racers to please ignore the guys and

gals with the cameras, and really just focus on the racetrack. I don’t want to be the reason that someone took their eyes away from the racing line for a second, then fell over. I know it is some-times a reflex reaction when there is a camera to just turn toward it and smile. I wish I could help riders by dressing in all black, and hiding in the shadows like a ninja, but, track insurance poli-cies being what they are, I have to have a brightly colored neon vest if I am to get anywhere near the track with the camera. Remind your racers that the only vested persons to be mindful of are the flaggers, not camera operators. I want to be ignored by the racers and invisible to them when the races are running. After the races, I welcome the racers approaching me, chatting me up, no problem. If they want photos off track, that is not a problem either. But I strongly encourage their focus on the track to be on operating their bike, not looking off to the side. Yes, it is a safety issue, but also an artistic one as well, as photos of rid-ers looking square in the camera rarely get pub-lished; they just look strange, more often than not. So, please, a gentle reminder; eyes straight ahead. We have lots of time afterwards to discuss photo ideas you might have, I am very open to novel ideas. Just don’t try to communicate them during the race. See you all at the next round! K e v i n L e f e b v r e

After grabbing the holeshot, a minor stall in the sand section by Trevor Brown (91) was just enough for Jacob Piccolo (81) to slip by. Brown would pursue Piccolo, and the two would duel fiercely until the last lap, but....


....Piccolo would hold off a determined Brown to take the win on his SuperMini. Brown scrubbed his 250F hard over the finish line tabletop to avoid sending himself into orbit, à la Johnny O’Mara.

In the second Schoolboy moto, Trevor Brown rode a flawless race, grabbing the holeshot and never looking back. Jacob Piccolo rode impressively to a second place finish, doing everything he could to try to match Brown’s pace. Jacob provided GoPro footage here.

With the start of the nationals just a few scant weeks away, the Ladies

class was heating up as the riders sized up the track and the competition. Yama-ha mounted Rachel Springman walked away from the pack to a 1 - 1 sweep, with an aggressive riding style that saw her blitzing through the whoops and attack-ing the jumps with wild abandon. Jamie Munro set a blazing fast pace en route to 2-2 finishes. With her bright orange KTM and Fox gear, coupled with a super-smooth style, one couldn’t help but be reminded of the current American super-cross champ. Kristen Tse rounded out the top 3, and this round saw the addition of Dominique Daffe, from Calgary Alberta. If the action today was any indicator, then the race action at the National should be exceptional.

Some racers you want to see do well be-cause they show a certain speed, style or

finesse on the track. Others, you want to see do well because they have had to overcome major obstacles in their personal lives off the track. Nine year old Cody Oliver falls into the latter category. The G&G Racing/Big Top Pow-ersport/Atlas Brace/Matrix Concept/100% Goggles KTM rider has seen more than his share of difficulties in his young life. He came to his doctors’ attention merely days after birth, after it was discovered that he was born without a thyroid gland, a condition referred to as congenital hypothyroidism. The effects of this condition are serious if untreated, in-cluding failure to grow, lethargy and other neurodevelopmental delays. He was started on a synthetic thyroid medication, which is a lifelong obligation he will have to be diligent to follow. The family accommodated for Cody’s hypothyroidism, but would be facing yet an-other medical challenge a mere three years afterward. Cody was diagnosed with Perthes disease, a condition usually diagnosed in chil-dren and characterized by a temporary loss of blood flow to the hip. Without an adequate blood supply, the head of the femur (which attaches to the hip) dies. The area becomes intensely inflamed and irritated, and those affected can have difficulties walking, and a limited range of leg motion. For the next four years, Cody would have many physical limita-tions placed on him, and was unable to par-ticipate in the usual kinds of activities that little boys like to do. However, at age 7, he finally received physicians’ clearance to en-gage in sports and other physical activities, and he dived into football. He also attended a motocross race shortly thereafter with his grandmother, and decided that racing moto-cross would be something that he would like to do. His mother was hesitant to agree to

this, not so much because she worried about him hurting his hip, but she worried she would be unable to financially support him on her lone income. Enter G&G Racing, (that’s Grandma and Grandpa), who decided that if Cody wanted to pursue racing, they would ensure that he would not have to go without. With an agreement in place, Cody’s mother bought him an inexpensive dirtbike to learn on. It did not take long before he raced his first arenacross, earning a third place finish in the New Kid Beginner class. G&G Racing pro-vided him with a newer KTM 65, and boosted his confidence even further with a custom decal kit. He attended the Ryan Lockhart and Kyle Beaton MX schools, and learned many new skills. Afterward, Cody also took a mentorship role with his younger brothers, passing on the many riding tips and skills he learned from Ryan and Kyle. From what many would consider a late entry into childhood, Cody defied the odds and is living a deter-mined life, enjoying his racing to the fullest.

Kelowna Yamaha's Casey Keast looked strong in practice, but a poor start in the fist moto prevented him from reaching the podium. The second moto saw Keast ride back to his pit area early to retire for the day.


Leading Edge Kawasaki mounted Parker Engel rode to 10-10 finishes in the MX-2 class for 11th overall. He had the fastest reflexes in the second moto of the MX-3 class, grabbing the holeshot, but was T-boned immediately after. He went down hard, and his bike was crippled with three broken spokes and a bent front wheel. Impressively, Parker was not deterred from the day’s events, and was optimistic about the upcoming round in Williams Lake, BC, promising to better his scores. Outside of MX, they don’t make ‘em tough like this anymore!
