What is a Gap Year?

A Gap Year is a structured period of personal growth that can include

activities such as volunteering, interning, language study, outdoor adventure, travel and enrichment

programs.

A gap year is typically taken between high school graduation

and higher education.

Program Examples Cost:$7,000-$18,000 per 12 weeks

Interning/Apprenticeship

• Career-related experience• Domestic or International • Live in apartments or homestay• Not as group oriented – more

independent • Skills building

Program Examples Cost:$0-domestic

$1,500-$3,000 plus living expenses international

• Exploring a region of the world• Skills building • Can take place in summer or during

gap year• Doesn’t have to be at home!

Volunteering

• Giving back to a community• Can be individual or with a group • Domestic or International • Language study (if desired)• Skills building • Popular types: Teaching, Conservation,

Animals, Community Development • Not usually free (and that’s ok)

Things to Think About:• Vulnerable children

• Why they need volunteers

• Beware of large companies running many programs

• Keeping expectations realistic

• Learn a skill that you’ve been wanting to develop

• Usually short term (couple weeks- a month)• Language study (if desired)• Skills building • Examples: Arts (painting/ceramics),

• What are your strengths? What do you have to give?

• If you could affect change for once issue of concern in the world, what would it be?

• If you could travel anywhere or do anything, what would you do?
