Saving the world, one edible at a time

¼ ounce finely chopped herbs1 cup butter

1 cup white sugar1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs1 tsp. vanilla2 cups flour

2 ½ cups rolled oats½ tsp. salt

1 tsp. baking powder1 tsp. baking soda

1 12-ounce bag chocolate chips (semi-sweet)

Ingredients Needed

Cooking Directions1. Prepare “bud butter” using the following method: (This is the most

important step in the recipe) Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add butter and herbs. Reduce to a simmer (or low boil) and cook,

stirring lots, for about five to six hours (the longer the better).

Refrigerate overnight. Remove hardeneddisk of butter and discard ugly brown water.

2. Combine flour, rolled oats, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a large mixing bowl. Mix together herbal butter, white and brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. Blend moist and dry ingredients together. Add chocolate chips.

3. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons onto an un-greased cookie sheet. Bake in a 325 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes. Carefully transfer cookies from pan

and allow to cool.

*Makes about 60 cookies.

IMPORTANT! Do not cook your brownies over 325 degrees as this

burns off the THC.

Down the Hatch

Hello once again, to all Ganja Gazette readers. I’m back with another review on some great products available at Natures Herbs and Wellness Center. I really hope last month’s review helped out some new patients that are trying edibles for the first time.

I know many patients prefer to smoke their medicine but others need a smoke free outlet to medicate. Remember readers, edibles may take a little longer to kick in, but the effect will last longer than smoking. So enjoy an edible on a hike or before going to some boring meeting at work (you will thank me later), but also remember your tolerance level. Do not over medicate yourself! Understand your body and know when enough is enough. I don’t want to hear a story on the news about some friends who got lost in the woods because they were too high on edibles. Please be careful.

On that happy note, let’s get down to reviews. I got the pleasure of trying a refreshing drink made by the Dixie Company out of Denver. They are the makers of the truffles (300mg’s of THC, wow!) from last month, and many other smoke free products. This company also makes sparkling drinks or elixirs. They come in many awesome

flavors like blueberry, pomegranate, mandarin orange, and my personal favorite, peach. All these beverages are carbonated and come in twelve ounce bottles. They also come in two strength levels, 40mg or 75mg. Unlike their counterpart (Keef Cola), these elixirs are sativa based, thus the great cerebral high I felt with this drink.

I got two drinks (Blueberry and Peach both 75mg’s), and gave one to a friend (she is also another card holder) so I could get her review on the drink. I gave her the blueberry, and I obviously had the peach one. These drinks taste amazing! Very nice and refreshing, and you cannot taste any of the medication. She tasted the blueberry, but swears it tasted more like grape soda. The peach I drank was right on target. As we were sipping on the drinks, I came up with the great idea to add a little half and half to make Italian cream sodas. Wow, mine tasted like a peaches and cream Popsicle. I highly recommend adding some milk (soy milk would be fine) or some half and half to any of their drinks for added enjoyment. After the drinks, we both loaded up on candy and headed to the movie theatre to watch the “Avengers” in 3-D. I couldn’t have asked for a better time at the movies. We both felt amazing body highs

that almost had a weightless feeling (kind of like floating). I also think the medication kicks in a little faster because of the carbonation in the drink. It’s science, baby, at its best!

Please enjoy any of the flavors they carry and have a wonderful time, whatever you choose to do. Just remember to medicate with care when it comes to edibles or drinks. I will be drinking one before my trip to the Zoo; I can’t wait! See ya on the flip side.

Colorado to Vote on Legal Weed This Year

Twelve years ago, Colorado legalized the sale and use of medical marijuana to licensed residents. Now, the

Centennial State may be on the verge of legalizing cannabis for all. State Amendment 64, or the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act of 2012, would legalize the private use and possession of marijuana for adults aged 21 and up. The amendment would also allow those adults to grow their own weed at home in limited amounts.

The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol has spent the past year working to get this initiative on the Colorado ballot, facing such challenges as a shortage of supporting signatories and a brief kerfuffle with Legalize 2012, another group campaigning for legal weed in Colorado. Now that they’re on the ballot, the campaign is spreading the word across the state and telling voters to say “yes” to Amendment 64 in November.

In 2006, a similar initiative was rejected by Colorado voters. Amendment 44 proposed to legalize the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana by users 21 and older, who would have had the right to private use of the drug. Supporters of that amendment included the state Libertarian Party and Sensible Colorado. The initiative was defeated at the polls by a 20% margin.

Since then, support for marijuana legalization has gone up both in Colorado and nationwide. Amendment 64 has considerably more support than did the 2006 initiative. Already, various members of the Colorado Democratic Party have voiced their official support, including the Democratic Parties of Boulder, Larimer, Pueblo, and Weld Counties, among others. Additional endorsements have come from the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, the Colorado chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, and a number of city council members across the state.

Advocates for the amendment believe non-medical cannabis sales will generate a great deal of tax revenue—much more than the medical marijuana system. Application fees for marijuana sales generated over $8 million in 2007 (the first year those applications were enacted,) and between 2010 and 2011, revenue generated by taxes on marijuana sales increased by almost $3 million.

The act proposes an excise tax be placed on cannabis sales from cultivation businesses to retail stores at a rate “not to exceed fifteen percent.” In addition, the act stipulates that the first $40 million raised per year be directed to the Public School Capital Construction Assistance Fund.

Some dispensary owners have voiced concerns regarding the

impact Amendment 64’s passage would have on the existing medical marijuana system. Would it still exist, or would the act diminish its necessity? According to the campaign’s website, passage of the amendment would not affect the state’s current medical marijuana system. Those laws regarding patients, caregivers, and cannabusinesses would not change, and the proposed excise tax would not be levied on those within the medical marijuana system.

However, the campaign’s website does state that “Consumer privacy will be enhanced because individuals will only need to provide proof of age to purchase marijuana.” There is no mention of a license fee or a database of buyers that can be accessed by police and other authority figures—both points often raised as reasons not to get a medical marijuana card. The new system could pull in some of medical marijuana’s detractors as well as its more reluctant users, who fear for their privacy and rights.

The amendment has its share of opponents. Among them is Kevin Fisher, the co-owner of Rocky Mountain Remedies, the largest dispensary in Steamboat Springs. Fisher told the Steamboat Pilot & Today that he fears more federal intervention if cannabis were accessible to all adults. Colorado has already seen dispensaries raided by the Drug

Enforcement Administration. Would more access to weed mean an increased risk of a crackdown?

Not necessarily, says Mason Tvert, co-director of the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol. “The feds don’t enforce state statutes.” He hopes the act will not garner attention from the federal government. It’s unclear, though, whether Tvert’s hopes will translate into reality. The White House has made it clear in the past few years that the Obama administration is not in favor of legalizing marijuana.

It’s worth noting that Amendment 64 respects Colorado’s status as a home-rule state by permitting local governments to ban the sale of marijuana. Many localities, like Greeley, Loveland, and Fort Collins, have already banned medical marijuana, and voters in those areas can be expected to reject the non-medical system as well.

Before they can do that, though, a majority of voters will have to approve the amendment. Just over half of Colorado voters support a decriminalization effort like Amendment 64, according to a number of recent polls. Whether that number will translate into yeses on ballots will be seen in November. If it doesn’t, you can be sure the campaign will continue to work towards the passage of a similar act in coming years.

Spider Mites!There. I said it: the

“S” word. The most vulgar of all profanity in the grow room. For those of us who are Cannabis Cultivators, the uttering of this

word in reference to a grow room means that there are problems, potentially big problems—the type of problem that can take a room full of nice-looking buds that are 3 weeks from harvest and transform it into a big web of nasty, webby, insect-ridden disaster.

Yes, it can happen that quickly.

The culprit here 99% of the time is a type of mite known as the Two-Spotted spider mite (which, for the Entemologically hip, are a member of the Acari family of mites, or Tetranychidae). These unwelcome houseguests can enter a garden in a myriad of ways, as they like to munch on hundreds of species of plants; they are literally all over the place. Often, the growers themselves are actually the culprit, bringing the bugs in on shoes, clothes, or dreadlocks. The mites could be anywhere. Be particularly cognizant of entering indoor cultivation sites after visiting hydroponics stores, dispensaries, or any other type of plant environment (which, technically, would be anywhere).

These types of attempts to deter Spider Mite infestations, by being aware of the fact that the tiny insects (they are less than one millimeter in overall size) may become stowaways on the gardener himself, can be called behavioral prevention techniques. It is a good idea to wash/shower, change into new clothes, and have a pair of shoes worn by the grower only in the garden,

before entering the garden area. Other ideas include lab coats, scrubs, booties for the feet, etc, but nothing will be superior to a good, thorough wash-down and clean clothes. If there are mites in the garden, they could potentially be on the lab coat.

Any mites in the garden will likely be a big problem if there is nothing done to try and curb the population. A fertile female Spider Mite can produce 20 or so eggs a day. Yes, every single day, one female can produce 20 eggs. These eggs can hatch in as little as three days. Many of these eggs will produce female Spider Mites, which can become sexually mature in as few as 5 days. These mature female Spider Mites now will do the same dance, and so on. All of these mites, male or female, suck the essential juices from within the cannabis plants. They are low-life parasites. They will reproduce quickly enough that the entire mite population will disrupt plant growth.

As an added bonus (sarcasm), the little unwanted house guests spin these cool (also sarcasm) webs around the plants’ leaves, even big ol’ bud colas! These

webs allow the mites to transport themselves from one part of the plant to another, to further reproduce and

spread their e m p i r e . I f t h e gardener is seeing these silky webs covering leaves and colas, there is little more to say; that gardener is on a boat with a slow leak. The insects have won, and likely the crop is “barely salvageable” at the very best.

The thing is, in nature, Spider Mites are less of a problem to gardeners because of other predatory species that consume them. Thank God for Praying Mantises, who will eat just about anything problematic. Other forms of mites also eat

useless.Therefore,

to be a successful ganja grower, one must know how to spot the existence of Spider Mites on plants, and get rid of them!

Spider mites are invariably detected by a stipling visible on the leaves, a spotted pattern of discoloration, and usually just on one or a few leaves at first. This is where the Spider Mites have been sucking the lifeblood of the plant, namely its Chlorophyll, from the underside of the leaf. Once this

stipling pattern has been identified, turn the leaf over and look with either the naked eye (if the grower has good eyesight) or with a magnifying glass. Chances are there will be several tiny little insects, crawling around on that leaf. It is time to act.

Even if the mites are only discovered

in a small area of the garden,

even on one leaf, no act is

really too drastic to try and eradicate the problem—which can be very difficult. Treat every plant as if it were infested—especial ly those in the direct vicinity of the observed problem.

Several products are available for use on Spider Mites. Some are foggers, which release a gas that will kill the mites, notably pyrethium. This author has only used these types of products once, per the manufacturer’s instructions, and it caused all kinds of damage to his plants, so that’s about all that’s going to be said about them. Perhaps some of the more informed personnel at one’s local hydroponics outlet can shed some light on some of the products that work effectively without damaging plants. The advantage to this type of product would be the low cost and ease of use.

What are preferred by many experienced growers are products that must be sprayed onto the leaves. Many of these products are

derived from an extract from the Neem tree (Neem Oil). This type of product is mixed with water, and often times a wetting agent like biodegradable dish soap, and is sprayed diligently on the plants’ leaves, stems, pots, family, friends, pets, neighbors. Any place there may be a Spider Mite, especially on a plant, spray the product. Make especially sure to get both the tops and bottoms of the leaves! Remember, the mites prefer to live on the underside of the leaves in order to stay in the shade, and one can presume, suck the Chlorophyll out of the leaf more easily. Make two passes; most pressurized sprayers have an angled nozzle, so spray the undersides of the leaves, then

turn the nozzle around 180 degrees and spray the tops. The plants should be dripping with insecticide at the end of the spray session.

Remember, these insects can reproduce every three days. So, once the plants are sprayed, they should be sprayed two more times, three days apart, in order to kill the insects before they can start laying more eggs. This is very important. If the garden has only been sprayed once, and it’s been a week or more, the garden has not been sprayed. Like taking an antibiotic, it is important to follow the regimen.

The rapid reproduction of these insects makes it quite possible that they can become resistant to the insecticide being

used. So, often, it is possible to increase effectiveness by having two or more products on hand, and to alternate between ones that seem to work, to combat this inconvenient fact.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of other types of insects to worry about, too! Unfortunately, there was only time in this column to discuss the Two Spotted Spider mites. The upcoming issues of the Ganja Gazette will cover some of the other pathogenic insects and/or Fungi that can attack Cannabis plants, but the Falcon has got your back, so grow on, readers, and we will catch up next time!

What took them so long to think of this? “Most wineries rely on the human nose [to detect out-of-place odors],” said the vintner of the Australian boutique wine Linnaea, “but that is time-consuming, costly, and nowhere as reliable as Belle.” Miss Louisa Belle is a 7-year-old bloodhound possessing, of course, a nose that is reportedly 2,000 times more sensitive than the human nose. Her primary job, the vintner told Melbourne’s Herald Sun in July, is to sniff out tainted corks during the bottling process.

In Durango, Colo., Sean Ogden, 19, was seriously burned in July when he tried to break down fireworks he had purchased in order to build even bigger ones. He was mixing them in a coffee-bean grinder.

The first published instance of a woman’s nipple appearing on the sole of her foot was noted in a 2006 report in the journal Dermatology and reprised in a series of U.S. and British press reports in July 2011. The reporting physicians, led by Dr. Delio Marques Conde, acknowledged that out-of-place breast tissue, while extremely rare, has shown up before on the back, shoulder, face and thigh. The foot nipple was “well-formed,” with areola and sebaceous glands.

British college student Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones, 19, recently had her tongue surgically lengthened just so she could better pronounce the Korean letter “L.”

London’s Daily Mail reported in August that the student had become fascinated with Korean culture and intends to live and work in South Korea eventually -- and would need to speak like a native to succeed. She is now satisfied that she does.

The fashion designer Chandrashekar Chawan recently created gold-plated, diamond-studded contact lenses that make eyes “sparkle” (not always a good thing, admitted Chawan, citing reviews calling the look “cringeworthy” and “demonic”). According to an MSNBC report, the “bling” part never actually touches the cornea.

Jeffrey Rohlfing is on the payroll as a surgeon in the state prison system (base pay: $235,740), but he has been barred from treating inmates for the last six years because supervisors believe him to be incompetent. Last year, Dr. Rohlfing earned an additional $541,000 in back pay after he successfully appealed his firing to the state’s apparently easily persuaded Personnel Board. Currently, Dr. Rohlfing is assigned r e c o r d s - k e e p i n g duties.
