Back to Nature

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge,as part of her campaign to encourage chil-dren to play outside, has initiated the moveto develop ‘Back to Nature’ gardensequipped with facilities that would fasci-nate the child to engage in physical activ-ities. Playing outdoors should be a vital partof every kid’s early development. Besidesboosting physical and mental growth, it alsohelps the child to learn various life skills: agreat chance for kids to run, jump, make amess, explore their self in natural sur-roundings.With the advent of modern technology, children these days are spending moretime on their iPads, Nintendos or in watch-ing television. Scientists, doctors, mentalhealth experts, educationalists, sociolo-gists from across the globe have been pro-fessing the need to allow children to goout into the natural world. This, they stress, not only helps in their development, interms of physical and mental, but also thatof the society as a whole.Unfortunately, children these days do notappear to have spare time as well. Theparents, in their eagerness to make theirwards excel in every sphere, lay moreemphasis on after-school activities, coach-ing, organised sports etc. Due to this, chil-dren have really no time to do activitieslike climbing trees, building dens, playingin the mud etc. which used to be the regu-lar fun activities of the children in the ear-lier days. Moreover, living in a nuclear fam-ily makes it all the more difficult to let kidsgo out and play while ensuring they aresafe and sound under adult supervision.Hence, digital technology becomes theeasiest and the only option for parents tokeep their kids busy with something whilethey get busy completing their never-end-ing office or household work. But this istaking a huge toll on their health. Obesityis perhaps the most visible symptom of thelack of such play.As per the studies conducted worldwide,by spending just few minutes with naturecan help in improving mental wellbeing andself-esteem. Free and unstructured playin the outdoors boosts problem-solvingskills, focus and self-discipline. Socially, itimproves cooperation, flexibility, and self-awareness. Emotional benefits include re-duced aggression and increased happiness.Nature is a tool to get children to experi-ence not just the wider world, but alsothemselves. Let them learn how to takeresponsibility and how to measure riskfor themselves. Children are the futureof our nation. Let us all play a consciousand proactive role in developing a posi-tive outlook toward outdoor games orsports among kids.

Bandra Fair- A week-long celebrationDear Editor,The Bandra Fair is a week-long celebration held annually in the Bandra

suburb of Mumbai, starting on the following Sunday after September 8. It iscelebrated to commemorate the Nativity of Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christon September 8 at the Mount Mary’s Church Basilica at Bandra.

The Bandra Fair is estimated to be around 500 years old. The fair was first started when astatue of Mother Mary was found floating in the sea between 1700 and 1760 A.D., which accordingto a legend, a Koli fisherman had dreamt about it a few years earlier. The history behind thecurrent statue of Our Lady of the Mount goes back to the 16th century A.D. when some Jesuitpriests from Portugal brought the statue to Bandra and constructed the Mount Mary’s Churchthere.

In 1700, some Arab pirates disfigured the statue by cutting off the right hand. In 1760, theChurch was rebuilt and the statue was substituted with a statue of Our Lady of Navigators fromthe nearby St. Andrew’s Church. This statue has an interesting legend to tell. It goes that a Kolifisherman dreamt that he would find a statue in the sea. His dream came true as the statue wasfound floating in the sea between 1700 and 1760 A.D. A Jesuit annual letter dated to 1669 andpublished in the book of St. Andrew’s Church, Bandra (1616–1966) supports this claim. This wasbelieved to be a miracle by the locals, and the Bandra Fair was started to celebrate this greatevent. However, in the year 1761, the original statue of the Lady of the Mount was renovated withthe child Jesus in her arms and is venerated at the fair ever since. The fair draws oven ten lakhdevotees and pilgrims annually. During the Bandra Fair week, tens of thousands of people of allfaiths and communities visit the shrine.

This year, Bandra Fair has started on September 8 and will end on September 15. It is a week-long celebration from Sunday to Sunday.

Jubel D’Cruz, Mumbai.

Letter to the Editors....

Motor Vehicle Act MeaninglessDear Editor,According to the Motor Vehicle Act, driving without a seat belt, drunk driving, jumping traffic

signals, speeding, driving without insurance and overloading vehicles will attract heftier fines.Driving under the influence of alcohol, not giving way to ambulances or fire brigade will attract apenalty of Rs.10000 or imprisonment under the Act. But all this appears a rule only on paper as noone is able to follow traffic rule in a most dis-organised traffic segment and the road rules areoverlooked as per convenience. With the result most of the states have enforced or looking for rollback in the next few days.

Even Maharashtra state along with Gujarat is thinking of cutting down the road fines and theclamour for roll back is on the cards. The MV Act was cleared without looking at the pros and consand now there is no other way but to bring modification.

Soft, cool breeze, thesmell of damp soiland the sight of adrizzly morning witha warm cup of tea inhand… bliss! Theonset of the monsoonsis a welcome andrefreshing break afterthe scorching heat ofIndia’s summers. Andbefore we plungeheadlong into sere-nading the rains ,let’s look at thespecial care you needto take of your skinthis season.Steps to Skin Careduring Monsoons :Step 1 : As always, itis cleansing. Highhumidity causessweat, dirt and dustbuild up on the skin’ssurface, along withother pollutants.Hence, it is importantto cleanse your skillwell. Use a soap freecleanser if you havedry or sensitive skin.Use an antibacterialface wash if you haveoily or acne proneskin.Step 2 : The rains setfree a lot of airborneand waterbornegerms. A good anti-bacterial toner will

make up is the keyword this season.Stick to powder basedfoundation whichwont bleed. Use kohlpencils instead ofliquid eye liners.Step 5. When you getwet in the rains, theskin gets dehydrated.

Humidity adds todehydration. Thisleads to dry and itchyskin. So before youhit the bed at night, remove all your makeup , wash your faceand moisturise. Yourbody needs as muchcare as your face. Somake sure you use alight moisturiser foryour face and a thick

moisturiser for yourbody. Shea butter, squalene, cocoabutter, almond oil, olive oil are ingredi-ents to look for inyour body moisturis-ers.Step 6 : Foot care: Inthe monsoons, ourskin and more so ourfeet are at the receiv-ing end of a greatdeal. With our streets, wading through knee-deep water even if itmeans getting out ofa Porche and walkingto your office porch oraccidentally steppinginto an open drain areall within the realmsof possibility. Wetfootwear is the worst. While your shoes getwet, your feet within, far worse. They areexposed to dampnessthrough the day andlook raw and broiledby the time you reachhome at night. So,how can you protectyour feet this mon-soon?After you reach home, wash your legs with amild shower gel andwater. Pat your legsdry with a soft toweland ensure that youdry your feet and thespaces between thetoes thoroughly. Applyan oil free moisturiserto prevent the skinfrom getting dehy-drated.Try keeping a pair ofsandals at the officeso that you don’t haveto torture your feet in

those wet socks &shoes.Avoid leather. Selectshoes with rubber orpolyester soles orheels. This will alsoprevent skin allergies.Step 6 : Exfoliate ! Itis important toexfoliate once in aweek if you have oilyskin and once in afortnight if you havedry skin. Pure oat-meal scrub is a goodoption to cleanse yourskin. You can also useripe papaya pulp as amild exfoliant. Don’tforget to exfoliateyour feet too.Monsoon Do’s and

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Reason to Panic? Fever!!!

By Dr. Firuzi Mehta

Most of us have ex-perienced a state of pan-ic when an infant or achild falls sick. When achild isn’t feeling well, the first thing thatcomes to our mind is tocheck for a fever. ‘Fever’is not an illness by it-self, but it is a signthat indicates thatsomething is not rightinside the body. ‘Alarm

bells’ go off within mostmothers and they reactto this by instantly try-ing to bring down thefever, either by givingthe child some medicineto bring down the fever, like a paracetamol, orby rushing to the doc-tor for stronger medica-tions. Average normaltemperature is consid-ered to be 98.6 degreesF, however, what is nor-mal for an individualmay be slightly higheror lower than the aver-age normal tempera-

ture. A significant feveris one where the tem-perature is 102 degreesF or above. It is impor-tant to remember thatfevers are not necessar-ily bad. A fever is pro-duced by our immunesystem to help the bodyfight off a number ofbacterial and viral in-fections. The virusesthat cause colds andother respiratory infec-tions thrive better atcool temperatures. Thefever that the body pro-duces in response tosuch an infection is ac-tually beneficial, as therise in temperaturemakes it tougher forthese viruses to surviveand multiply. Hence thelow-grade fevers com-

monly seen with suchinfections help in elim-inating the virus.

By artificiallybringing down the tem-perature with periodicalmedication, you are inreality increasing theduration of the illnessas the viruses thentake longer to get ridoff. There have alsobeen some research pa-pers showing thatchildhood infectious fe-brile illnesses play abeneficial role in devel-oping immunity to-

wards chronic degener-ative diseases in lateradult life. Fevers canoccur with a widerange of conditions, hence it is the otheraccompanying signsand symptoms thathelp to diagnose thereal underlying cause ofthe fever. If you do notknow the cause of thefever, it is best not totry to bring down thefever as this only sup-presses the symptomsand makes it more dif-ficult to diagnose. It isnot advisable to bringdown temperaturesthat are below 102 F(38.9 C), as it is alsobelieved that aggres-sively treating evenmild fevers interfereswith the body’s im-mune response. It ismore important towatch how your child isbehaving. If the child isfairly active, and hasperiods of playfulness,he probably doesn’tneed aggressive treat-ment. Let the child restin a room with good cir-culation of air, with fanor AC.

Dress the childlightly. Keep giving thechild fluids to drink, especially normaldrinking water. Foodshould be light and easyto digest as heavy foodsare difficult to digestduring fevers as thefunctioning of the diges-tive system slowsdown. Over exertionshould be avoided. Tep-id sponging is an ac-ceptable method tobring down a high fe-ver. Place the child ina tub, but put only 1 to2 inches of tepid water(85 to 90 degrees F or

29.4 to 32.2 degrees C)in the basin, test thewater with the back ofyour hand or wrist. Itshould feel just slight-ly warm. Do not usecold water, since thatwill be uncomfortableand may cause shiver-ing, which can raise thetemperature. Seat yourchild in the water; it ismore comfortable thanlying down. Then, us-ing a clean washcloth orsponge, spread a film ofwater over the trunk, arms and legs. Thewater will evaporateand cool the body. Con-tinue sponging the childuntil the temperaturehas reached an accept-able level. Usually,

sponging will bringdown the fever in thir-ty to forty-five minutes. However, if your childis resisting actively, stop and let the childjust sit and play in thewater. If being in thetub makes the childmore upset and uncom-fortable, it is best totake him/her out evenif the fever is un-changed.

Remember, fever inthe moderate range(less than 102 degreesF / 38.9 degrees C) is initself not harmful. Veryhigh fevers, between103 and 106 F, maycause hallucinations, confusion, irritabilityand even convulsions.Approximately four per-cent of children underage 5 experience fever-induced seizures (fe-

brile seizures). Thesigns of febrile seizures, which occur when achild’s temperature ris-es or falls rapidly, in-clude a brief loss of con-sciousness and convul-sions. Although theseseizures can be ex-tremely alarming, most children don’t ex-perience any lasting ef-fects. Parents shouldstay calm and careful-ly observe the child. Toprevent accidental inju-

ry, the child should beplaced on a protectedsurface such as thefloor or ground. Thechild should not be heldor restrained during aconvulsion. To preventchoking, the childshould be placed on hisor her side or stomach. When possible, the par-ent should gently re-move all objects fromthe child’s mouth. Theparent should neverplace anything in the

child’s mouth during aconvulsion. Objectsplaced in the mouth canbe broken and obstructthe child’s airway. Ifthe seizure lasts longerthan 10 minutes, thechild should be takenimmediately to thenearest medical facilityfor further treatment.Once the seizure hasended, the child shouldbe taken to his or herdoctor to check for thesource of the fever.

Medical help is es-sential if a child over 3months of age main-tains a temperatureover 103 F even after afew hours of hometreatment. Contact thedoctor urgently if thechild has symptoms of:Stiff neck; Extremelethargy; Largeamounts of diarrhea or

vomiting; Swelling ofthe throat; Mental con-fusion; Unusual rashesor bite marks; Severeheadache.

Homeopathy worksgently and safely and inmost cases, rapidly, toset right the cause ofthe fever and therebytreats the illness. Ho-meopathic medicines donot compromise theimmunity; they workby stimulating thebody’s own immunesystem to fight the ill-ness, hence the treat-ment does not weakenthe body any further.Recovery and recuper-ation is quick and thebody can get back to itsnormal healthy func-tioning within a veryshort time
