Let’s Start… from the picture
-- Question 2 : Where was he on 15-Aug-1947 ?… Even as India celebrated her hard-won freedom on August 15, 1947, Mahatma Gandhi, who had played such a sterling role in the movement, was in Kolkata.
Saddened by the Partition of the country, he spent the day with prayers, fasting and spinning
This was in stark contrast with the celebrations in Delhi where Nehru gave his 'Tryst with Destiny' speech as Indians rejoiced in their new-found Independence.
A day before on 14 August, speaking at Marwari Club in Calcutta, Gandhi said : "Tomorrow we will be free from the slavery of British; but from mid-night India will be cut into two pieces."
Gandhi did not issue any formal message nor did he attend the celebrations in Delhi. Talking to the group of students, Gandhiji said : '' I am not lifted off my feet by these demonstration of joy. "
