Johnny HamiltonGamification Level 2 Certification
Providence Health and Services
• Providence is a non-profit organization that includes over 78,000 caregivers in 35+ hospitals and 400+ facilities in five western states.
• There is a need to provide state and federal mandated learning to all caregivers.
Sexual Harassment eLearning Course
• This is a mandatory two hour compliance course for all caregivers in California.
• Many learners find these courses to be lacking in engagement.
• Incorporating gamification would engage the learners more in the course and make the content more ‘sticky’ so they will remember it on the job.
Solution• Micro games will be incorporated throughout the course
to to help learners review the content.• Learners earn a point for each micro game. Points will
be shown throughout the course.• Micro games include:• Beat the Clock: Match icons with definitions before the
timer runs out.• Sort It Out: Classify statements into one of four
categories before the timer runs out.• A-Mazing: Move a person through a maze without
touching the walls. Reveal key ideas along the way.• What’s the Word?: Click letters from a bank to guess the
hidden letters of a word (similar to Hangman, but without penalties)
Game Mechanics• Experience Points• Learners will earn a point for the completion of each
micro game• The points will be shown throughout the course
• Surprise and Delight• Several different micro games will be integrated• Games will be at the end of some, but not all, sections• Games are designed to be short and very fun
• Badges• Learners will earn a badge for each section of the course
that is completed• These badges will be non-linear, as each section covers a
different topic
Player Types• Achievers• The micro games each have a specific task that needs to be
accomplished• When the task is completed, a point is earned
• Explorers• Easter Eggs will be secretly placed within some of the
games. Explorers can dig around and find/reveal hidden fun items within the game.
• Limitations to These Player Types• This player type classification is based on what players of
multiplayer online games find fun. The eLearning courses in the Learning Management System do not have the capability to incorporate real-time learner interactions, so the micro games were not designed with collaboration in mind. The Bartle Player Types do not fit well.
