Hounds Previous Game Recap

CANNONS TOP HOUNDS 19-13 BEHIND 29 SAVES FROM BURKE Charlotte gets promising debut from rookie Joey Sankey

CHARLOTTE, NC (May 23, 2015) — The Charlotte Hounds on Saturday night lost their fourth-straight game, falling 19-13 to the Boston Cannons at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Cannons goalkeeper Jordan Burke lead the effort with 29 saves. In addition, Will Manny scored five goals and Kevin Buchanan four, earning him Coca-Cola Player of the Game honors. The Hounds, meanwhile, were lead by rookie Joey Sankey, who tallied eight points (5g, 3a) in his MLL debut, leaving him one shy of tying the team’s single-game record.

Mike Sawyer got the Hounds on the board first with a great individual effort, but Rob Emery found an equalizer from long range just 30 seconds later. After four scoreless minutes, Ryan Flanagan intercepted a pass and streaked for the cage. He tried to bounce a shot in but the ball went wide and the Cannons recovered. Scott Ratliff took it down field and ripped a two-pointer to put the visitors in front 3-1 with 6:09 to play. The Hounds had several shots in the next few minutes, but Burke stood tall in goal. John Haus finally broke through with 2:15 to play in the first quarter.

The Cannons scored their second two-point goal just 1:36 into the second quarter to push their lead to 5-2. It marked the start of a five-goal run for the visitors, who racked up a 9-2 advantage following back-to-back tallies from David Emala. Sankey ended the Hounds’ draught with just under five minutes to play in the half, but Manny responded with his second of the night to maintain a seven-goal differential. Then, with 2.6 seconds left on the play clock, Sawyer found Terry Kimener on the doorstep. Kimener powered it home to make it a 10-4 game at the half.

Hounds goalie Pierce Bassett made just two saves in the first half, which lead to him being replaced by Jack Runkel at the start of the third quarter. However, he got off to a rough start as well, allowing a goal on the first shot he saw. Manny scored two straight and Buchanan added his second of the night to build the Cannons advantage to 13-4 with 6:12 to play in the third. The Hounds started to find some momentum, as Sankey tallied back-to-back goals, but the Cannons had an answer for everything. Manny and Adams both scored before Sawyer could find the back of the net again, making it a 15-7 game going into the final 15 minutes.

Sankey continued to surge in the fourth quarter, scoring another two-straight in the first 1:15 to make it a six-goal game. But the Cannons outscored the Hounds three to one over the next seven minutes. Kevin Cunningham tallied back-to-back goals to pull the Hounds back within six with 53 seconds on the clock, but it wouldn’t be enough. Each team would score once more in the final seconds to account for the 19-13 final.

The Hounds’ home stand continues next week with a tilt against the undefeated New York Lizards (6-0), who are traveling to Charlotte off their bye week. The game will be played at American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday, May 30 with faceoff scheduled for 7:00pm ET.

Lizards Previous Game Recap

LIZARDS IMPROVE TO 6-0 WITH WIN OVER BAYHAWKS

Uniondale, NY (May 16, 2015) -The New York Lizards (6-0) remain undefeated with a pivotal 15-14 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks (3-2) on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Rob Pannell had a six-point (four goals, two assists) effort, Matt Gibson notched a hat trick and Mike Stone netted three goals. Seven-time MLL All-Star Paul Rabil chipped in with a goal and an assist.

The Lizards came ready to play, charging to a 2-1 lead on back-to-back goals late in the first from Matt Gibson. When action resumed in the second, Mike Stone, Matt Poskay and Tommy Palasek netted three unanswered scores, propelling New York to a 5-1 advantage with just over nine minutes left before the half.

Stone scored two more times before the midway mark, sending New York into halftime with a 7-4 lead. While the Lizards had a bevy of key contributors on offense in the opening half, their superstars on defense were just as dominant.

Joe Fletcher, Kyle Hartzell, Steve Holmes, Brian Spallina and Chris Piccirilli were each on their A-game, holding Chesapeake to 12 shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of play. Lizards goalie Drew Adams notched eight saves in the opening half, including an impressive second quarter that included four saves and just three goals allowed.

Chesapeake clawed back in the third, outscoring New York, 7-5, to cut the Lizards’ lead to one heading into the final frame. JoJo Marasco and Pannell netted back-to-back goals early in the fourth, putting the Lizards ahead 14-11.

Pannell struck again 7:40 into the final frame, effectively icing the game for New York. The Lizards staved off a late rally to walk away on top, 15-14. Owens finished with 14 saves overall.

New York earned the win in front of several players from the franchise’s inaugural season in 2001. In celebration of the 15th Anniversary of the Lizards, several of the inaugural team members were honored in a special ceremony during the first quarter. The current Lizards wore throwback jerseys that will be autographed and auctioned off to benefit Lizards legend Tim Goettalmann’s Monster’s Kids Foundation. Be sure to check out NYLizards.com/Auctions to bid on the jerseys. Bidding opens Mon., May 18th at 9 a.m.

Looking ahead, the Lizards will be traveling to Charlotte to play the Hounds on Saturday, May 30th at 7 p.m. After that, the Lizards return home on Friday, June 5th to host the Florida Launch in the first game of a home-and-home series.

News & Notes

ROSTER REPORT: The Hounds this week reactivated Tom DeNapoli from Injured Reserve and moved Brett Schmidt (groin) to the 2-Game IR (retroactive to Week 7). In addition, the team activated collegiate draftee John Kelly and waived midfielder Alex Zomerfeld.

HONORS & AWARDS: Attack Joey Sankey (UNC) was named Cascade Rookie of the Week following his eight-point (5g, 3a) performance against the Cannons on May 23.

RECORDS WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN: Sankey’s eight points (5g, 3a) on May 23 tied the Hounds’ single-game record, originally set by Ryan Young in 2013.

GOING STREAKING: John Haus has tallied at least one point in 18 straight regular-season games, dating back to May 10, 2014.

HELPING HANDS: The Hounds have the lowest percentage of assisted goals in MLL ( 40%), while the Lizards boast the second-best (54.5%).

IN YOUR FACE: The Lizards’ Greg Gurenlian boasts the MLL’s best faceoff win percentage at 70.0%, but the Hounds’ Brendan Fowler isn’t too far behind. The second-year pro sits at third in the league with a 59.3% win percentage. This should make for an exciting matchup at the X, as both players

also train with The Faceoff Academy.

OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Hounds midfielder Shamel Bratton’s twin brother Rhamel is a member of the Lizards, though he has yet to participate in a game this season
