GAME RANCHER OF THE YEAR

The laudable project of WRSA, namely the annual nomination of the Game

Rancher of the Year, plays a significant role in promoting the efficiency of

game production, which is based on sustainable utilisation. Candidates for

this prestigious nomination have to comply with the following criteria: financial

management, business management plan, income-generating activities, busi-

ness continuity plan, staff, social involvement, infrastructure, and general

involvement in the game industry and WRSA.

The winner, Pieter Lamprecht, and the other seven finalists are true

ambassadors for the game industry, an example that should be followed by

many game ranchers and especially newcomers to the industry. Apart from

the criteria of the Game Rancher of the Year competition, which could be

regarded as a general guideline for the industry, WRSA further encourages

excellence by also presenting awards to three game ranchers for achieve-

ments with regard to biodiversity and social responsibility, green economy,

and breeder of the year.

As hunting outfitter / game breeder, Pieter acknowledges that the hunting

and breeding industry go hand in hand. It can therefore be concluded that

successful game ranching will also ensure sufficient hunting opportunities in

future for hunters from South Africa as well as abroad. His sober advice to

newcomers to the game-ranching industry is that they should not wait too

long before entering the industry, as opportunities could be missed. He is pos-

itive about the need to identify more emerging farmers and make them part of

the industry – proof of his social responsibility.

With people such as Pieter and the other

finalists in its ranks, the game-ranching indus-

try is definitely set to reach further heights.
