Hard workBY BILL FOLEY

of The Montana Standard

NNathan Kobold never had tosearch very far for inspiration.

He had a role model whogave him a true understanding of hardwork living under the same roof — hismom.

Kobold was raised by a single mother,Michelle Marker, and he noticed that herlife wasn’t exactly an easy one.

“I remember when she was workingthree jobs,” Kobold says. “I used to haveto stay at my friend’s house on Thursdaynights because she was working late.”

Kobold used that same work ethic tobecome a key contributor in MontanaTech’s revamped defense.

Tech coach Chuck Morrell callsKobold a “365-day-a-year guy.”

“Some guys are blessed with differenttalents, and really his talent is how toughminded he is,” Morrell says. “It doesn’tmatter if it is Feb. 22 or Sept. 1, his effortlevel is the exact same.”

With one game left, Kobold is rankedNo. 9 in the Frontier Conference intackles, averaging 7.2 take downs pergame.

The junior safety also has an inter-ception and a fumblerecovery for theOrediggers.

That’s not bad for aplayer who came to townas a walk-on.

“I come from a singlemother. I had to get ascholarship if I wanted togo five years of school,”Kobold says.

After a couple yearson campus, Kobold finally got thatscholarship with the Orediggers.

“Coach (Bob) Green saw I was work-ing hard, and I know I earned it,” Koboldsays. “I know I worked hard.”

Kobold signed with the Orediggers inFebruary 2008 after a solid senior seasonat Billings West.

Kobold earned All-State honorablemention honors at outside linebackerwhile helping the Golden Bears advanceto the Class AA state championshipgame, where they lost to Helena Capital.

He played outside linebacker for theOrediggers.

After playing special teams as a red-shirt freshman in 2009, Kobold splittime at outside linebacker last season. He made 32 tackles in part-time duty.

With the coaching change came achange of positions for Kobold.

It was a change Kobold welcomed.“It’s a new scheme, and it’s a better

fit for me,” he says of playing safetyinstead of linebacker. “It was differentat first, for sure. But coach Morrell is agreat coach. He helped me out. He’s asecondary guy. He’s a safety guy, really.”

Morrell marvels at how well Koboldadjusted to the new position.

“That’s a big change,” the coach says.Kobold started all 10 games for the

Orediggers. He’ll start No. 11 Saturday

when the Orediggers close out the sea-son at Alumni Coliseum againstMontana Western.

“I’m still getting better,” he says ofthe new position.

Tech’s ‘Super Bowl’ is SaturdayBY BILL FOLEY

of The Montana Standard

For the Montana Tech football team,Oct. 1 represented rock bottom.

The Orediggers surrendered 42 sec-ond-half points and watched as their16-7 lead turned into a 55-16 loss atDillon’s Vigilante Field.

The loss was the fifth straight for theOrediggers, who fell to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in Frontier Conference play.

Making the loss even tougher to takewas that Tech didn’t play another gameuntil two weeks later because of theweek off.

Six weeks later, the Orediggers areout for a little redemption as the theytake on the Bulldogs at noon at AlumniColiseum.

“That almost seems like it was a sea-son ago that that happened,” Tech coachChuck Morrell said. “There’s a lot ofchanges that have happened withinframework of this team since that hap-pened.

“We feel like we’re a better ball club. We’re not perfect, but we’ve improvedsince that point.”

Morrell told his team this is their“Super Bowl” because it’s their lastgame until late August or earlySeptember of 2012.

A win would show the rest of theconference just how much Tech hasimproved as the season went on. Itwould also show the Bulldogs that theydidn’t see the best of the Orediggers onOct. 1.

“That’s what we talked about allweek,” Morrell said. “A lot of our guyshave brought that up that we want tostay focused and locked in for four

quarters.”The game has

meaning in thestandings, as well.

At 1-8 in confer-ence and 2-8 overall, the Orediggers cur-rently occupy the basement of theFrontier Conference.

Western is 2-7 and 2-8.A Bulldog win would leave the

Orediggers alone in last place.Throw in the fact that the two teams

have never liked each other, and youhave the makings of an entertaining col-lege football game.

“We really feel like it will springboard us into our offseason,” Morrellsaid. “We feel like this is as big as anygame we played this season. Our guyshave been preparing that way all week.”

Here are some other storylines tokeep an eye on Saturday at AlumniColiseum.

WESTERN SCREENSThe Bulldogs burned the Orediggers

repeatedly with the screen passes.Tech will need to do a better job stop-

ping that if the Orediggers want to winSaturday.

“That was our entire focus going intothe last game,” Morrell said. “Honestly,we couldn’t have played worse againstthe screen game.”

Sophomore running back T.J. Leepscored on a 20-yard screen. He also setup a run with a 73-yard reception on ascreen.

“They have the ability to get the ballout quick, so it’s difficult to get pressureon them,” Morrell said. “We’ve got to

really work on bot-tling up their screengame.”

WHICH QB?Both teams enter

the game with ques-tion at quarterback.

Tech’s Nick Baker will start his thirdstraight game in place of injured BrianSchwarzkoph.

Schwarzkoph practiced during theweek, but his availability Saturday isunknown.

He injured his hand Oct. 22 at MSU-Northern.

The Orediggers are also preparing toface two quarterbacks — senior ZachMcRae or junior Jeff Logan.

Western coach Ryan Nourse saidMcRae will start. However, the formerDillon Beaver has missed time latelywith another in a string of concussions.

Morrell said he was impressed withMcRae, who threw for 334 yards againstTech in October.

“He played really, really, really well,”Morrell said. “He’s a heck of a player.”

Logan threw for 134 yards and twotouchdowns in last week’s 54-13 loss toEastern Oregon.

“They’re not night-and-day type ofdifferent,” Morrell said of Western’squarterbacks. “They’ve got very similarstyles.

“Logan is probably a little bit morepocket oriented and works through hisprogressions a little more.

“The one thing that Zach has done isget out with his feet at times. He hurt uswith the run last time.”

The Bulldogs always have a bunch of

good receivers.Last week, junior Rashad Peniston

caught five passes for 101 yards. Hehauled in a 49-yard touchdown pass.

“He can really stretch the defensevertically,” Morrell said. “They’re bal-anced too. They’ve got a good runningback (Charlie Dotson). Their run helpsset up a lot of their passing game. Theirrun sets up their screens and their play-action passing.”

CHECKED OUT?After the Senior Day loss to Eastern

Oregon, disappointed Nourse said histeam wasn’t 100 percent in the game.

“I felt like some of our guys havealready checked out mentally,” the coachsaid. “It takes 11 guys playing. If youonly have seven guys going hard, itwon’t work.

“Eastern Oregon obviously wants tokeep playing. They’re working togetherlike a team should. This is the toughestconference in the nation, and we’re notready to compete at this level yet.”

Nourse pointed to a couple of playerswho were definitely bringing it all game.

“Charlie Dotson is a warrior,” Noursesaid. “He and guys like (defensive line-man) Trent Mallory battled hard today. It’s guys like that who are going to helpus turn the corner here.”

The game will be the last for Westernseniors McRae, Mallory, Dotson, ScottKeiter-Charles, Deryk Van Zee, ColtonWoods, Donte Green, Micah Mamiya,Lihikai Domingo, Mike Gallagher andPenisoni Tuifua.

Those 11 players certainly want to goout with a win. They’ll need the rest ofthe team giving it their all for that tohappen.

Nine Montana Tech football playerswill put on their pads and green jerseysfor the last time Saturday.

The Orediggers want to make surethey remember it for a lifetime.

Montana Tech plays host to MontanaWestern at noon at Alumni Coliseum.

The game is the season finale for bothteams, and the Orediggers will honortheir nine seniors in a pregame ceremo-ny.

Tech’s seniors are Connor O’Neill,Clay McQueary, Kevin Schey, LoganLedgerwood, Daniel Chandler, MattMatosich, Drew Waltee, Marcus Johnsonand Matt Study.

The Orediggers, who are coming off a28-14 loss at Carroll College, are plan-ning on sending those guys off in style.

“That’s the first thing we said afterthe Carroll game,” Tech coach ChuckMorrell said. “Obviously, it was a disap-pointing loss for us. But the first thingwe said to our guys is to do everything inour power to let our seniors finish theircareers with a ‘W.’”

The Orediggers are 2-8 overall and 1-8 in Frontier Conference play inMorrell’s first season.

Morrell said his Orediggers have builta foundation for future success this sea-son, however.

He said he couldn’t have done thatwithout his seniors leading the way.

“I can’t emphasize the level ofrespect I have for these guys,” Morrellsaid. “It’s not the easiest thing to gothrough a program transition. They’vebeen tremendous leaders for us thewhole season.”

Morrell said the losses didn’t deterthe determination of his seniors one bit.

“It would be so easy in that situationfor them to just back down, to give up onit, and they haven’t for one second,” hesaid. “Being a small group, they’ve beena crucial role in the success that we didhave during the season.”

During the Orediggers’ week off inthe middle of the season Morrell metwith his seniors.

“I told them I want them to comeback to this program three or four yearsfrom now when all these young guysthat they mentored have moved to thepoint of being very good college footballplayers,” Morrell said. “I want for themto say then ‘I had a lot to do with wherethis program is at.’”

Several players decided to walk awayfrom the program after coach Bob Greenretired after 24 years.

Morrell said that made him appreci-ate the seniors that stuck it out all themore.

“I have zero complaints about themthe whole time. They have been nothingshort of phenomenal,” the coach said.“As difficult as this transition has beenwith all the young guys and all the newguys and the injuries and everythingwe’ve dealt with this year, it wouldn’teven compare if I didn’t have thoseguys.”

“We won the first two games and Ifelt we executed our gameplan fairly well

wit our blocking schemes andhitting schemes,” MontanaTech head coach MarilynTobin said. “We cameout flat in the thirdgame and shotourselves in thefoot.

“We had 37 hitting errorsfor the match and that’s a lotof points for the other team. Ahuge factor was the hitting per-centages. Theirs were all posi-tives and several of ours were nega-tives.”

she will go.”Tobin noticed their play,

too.“Emily Erickson really

sparked their team in hitting,”the Oredigger coach said. “We

couldn’t stop her. Adn we had ahard time getting the ball overthe net on our side.

“It was frustrating afterwinning the first two games.

On the positive side, we out-blocked them 5-4 and I felt we had

some nice blocks.”The Westminster College women’s

volleyball team gave No. 8 Lewis-ClarkState everything it could handle beforedropping a 3-1 decision on in theBehnken Field House.

Work ...Continued from Page D5

Not only has Kobold started every game, he’s playedin nearly every defensive play.

“He’s just a super durable guy,” Morrell says. “He’sbeen a rock the entire season.”

So far, Kobold has 72 tackles, 34 of which are solo.He reached double digits in tackles four times,

including a season-high 13 Sept. 17 at Rocky MountainCollege.

“I hustle, man. That’s what it is,” Kobold says.“That’s what got me here.”

Kobold says he has to work hard because at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds — “190 on a good day,” he says — heisn’t he biggest player on the field. He also isn’t thefastest.

“I have to focus on my footwork and stuff because Idon’t have the speed,” he says, before pointing out thathe’s also not slow. “I’m fine, but I don’t run like 4.5.”

Kobold says he applies the traits he learned from awrestling career that took him to the Class AA statetournament four years.

He placed fourth at 160 pounds as a senior.“I was a wrestler my whole life,” he says. “I planned

on wrestling in college up until after my senior year infootball.

“My work ethic, I give that all to wrestling,” Koboldsays. “If I didn’t wrestle, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Kobold is majoring in applied health science. After

graduation, he says he might get a master’s degree inexercise science.

“I’d like to be a strength and conditioning coach,” hesays. “I’d like to do that or do something in the hospitallike cardiac rehab. Something around fitness andhealth.”

Kobold is close to two role models as far as hisfuture plans are concerned.

Assistant coach B.J. Campbell has taken strengthand conditioning training to new heights at Tech.

Kobold likes Campbell’s hands-on approach.“Coach Campbell’s got us doing all sorts of stuff,”

Kobold says. “He works on our form and technique. Before you did it (worked out) yourself. He’s in thereblowing the whistle, timing us.”

Kobold’s advisor is John Amtmann, a professor inapplied heath science who also teaches courses in judo,jiu-jitsu, strength training for fitness, whitewaterkayaking, yoga, rock climbing and backpacking.

“He’s awesome,” Kobold said of Amtmann. “I

learned a lot from him.”Kobold didn’t go to Tech for the degree, but it seems

to fit him naturally.“I walked on, so I can’t say a scholarship brought

me here,” he says. “Just football, really.”The Orediggers have one more football game this

season.A playoff berth went out the window long ago as the

young Orediggers struggled to a seven-game losingstreak.

The Orediggers will honor their group of nine sen-iors before the game.

“I love the seniors,” Kobold says. “I live with KevinSchey, so I’ve been hanging out with these guys for awhile. It’s going to be tough to see them go, but theyput in their time.”

While they only have one second-half win to showfor it so far, the Orediggers have been much improvedsince the mid-season week off.

Morrell’s 3-4 defense has shown signs of what ispromised to be a dominant unit down the line.

“We’re finally getting it down,” Kobold says. “I canfeel it. I think everyone else sees it, too.

“We’re playing faster and more confident.”That has Kobold already looking forward to his sec-

ond season at Montana Tech.He figures another offseason of hard work will make

the difference.“We have high expectations already for us next

year,” Kobold says. “You’ve got to get knocked downfirst before you can get up.”

“I was a wrestler my whole life. I planned on wrestling in college up until after my senior year in football.

My work ethic, I give that all to wrestling. If I didn’t wrestle, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Montana Western head coach RyanNourse has nearly a year under his beltat the front of a collegiate football pro-gram, and says it’s been an up-and-down ride over the course of the season.

“We kind of peaked in the middle ofthe season,” Nourse said of his Bulldogs.“But I feel confident that we’ve set afoundation for future success.Obviously, we would have liked to have afew more wins this season, but rightnow it’s not about the wins. It’s aboutsetting a standard of performance forthe future.”

Nourse isn’t ready to call it a seasonjust yet, as the Bulldogs have one moreshot at Montana Tech Saturday at noon.

Western got its first victory underNourse’s direction on Oct. 1 when theBulldogs dealt the Orediggers a 55-16beating at Vigilante Field in Dillon.

The Bulldogs since picked up anotherlast-second win over Montana State-Northern with a dramatic field goal fromYim Sribenjakul.

Senior Western quarterback ZachMcRae, who has been out the last twogames with a concussion, was cleared toplay this week and will start Saturday.

McRae picked the Oredigger defenseapart the last time the teams met, butNourse said he’s very wary of Tech’sdefense this time around.

“We’ve been watching them onvideo, and especially on defense, Tech’splaying very fast,” Nourse said. “They’reaggressive and they’re playing downhill.Tech is forcing the issue and puttingsome pressure on people. I think that’s afamiliar sight for a Morrell defense. He’sgot them rocking.”

Though it’s Senior Day for the

Orediggers, the Western seniors will alsobe playing in their final game.

“They’re giving it all they’ve got andthey’re battling away,” Nourse said.

“The way we play and type of playerswe’ll have here over the next few years, Ithink we’re pleased with what we’ve gotgoing on,” he continued. “I don’t thinkanyone is disappointed in our style. Wehad a good recruiting class, and from

here I feel we’re strong and we’re goingto compete.”

Nourse said working hard and con-tinuing to recruit quality players will behis goal for now.

“We weren’t trying to come in andbuild a team just for this season,” Noursesaid. “We wanted to build a program. Ithink we’ve got a pretty good foundationgoing.”
