game changers - an osp article (3:3)
DESCRIPTION
Eltek and our Americas Region President Allen Pitts named as one of the 2014 industry game changers. Published in June 2014, this is the third in a series of three interviews. "Those who influence with knowledge and character rather than a big booming voice. Those who know their area of expertise like the back of their hands WHILE they constantly seek to learn and conquer new opportunities across the telecom industry. Game Changers are those who lead by example and walk their talk."TRANSCRIPT

Talk about small cells and your company’s role in that area.
We continue to put a strong
focus on problem-solving and
technology development, and
are constantly looking at ways
to help our customers with their
power challenges. With small
cells, there are many variables
that must be addressed. Unlike
most traditional sites, the
equipment may not be easily
accessible so the gear inside
needs to be extremely reliable
and environmentally hardened.
There are size challenges as
well since the equipment must
be compact enough for
convenient deployment on
poles and in small spaces. We
have adapted our high-effi-
ciency technology to address
these challenges in a new
power product family that
doesn’t require an enclosure,
cooling, or maintenance. It’s
part of our commitment to help
service providers power their
small cell networks.
What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your organization?
Some of the most important
leadership decisions at Eltek
involve product development.
A careful balance exists
between committing resources
to a new product based on
customer needs and bringing
it to the market at the right
time. If a product hits too early
for current technology or at a
higher cost than the market will
bear, you have wasted serious
time and money. If it hits too
late, you are playing catch-up
to the competition. To lead
effectively, you have to take all
the input, internal and external,
and quickly make a decision as
to what is the right path to take.
Yet, the most critical decisions
in this area are not whether or
not to start a new project, but
making course corrections
once the project is underway
-- including stopping or
changing it based on evolving
customer needs and market
conditions.
What is Eltek doing to help progress power technology and solve new challenges?
In working very closely with
our customers we not only
learn where they are going
with their network plans, but
also what their challenges are.
We use that information to
direct our development in
order to help them overcome
those obstacles. One example
exists due to the result of the
gradual convergence of data
centers and central offices.
Providers are now able to fit
more servers into a given
space and the power needed
to run them continues to
escalate. So much so that
facilities are often running into
limitations on not simply floor
space, but cabling, air
conditioning, and power
capacity. We’ve invested in the
development of 240V and 380V
high voltage DC systems, and
are working with customers to
design their power infrastruc-
ture to substantially improve
efficiency, remove unneces-
sary conversions, reduce
cabling size and cost, and
reduce air conditioning
operation while continuing to
support existing 48V equip-
ment where it’s needed. It’s a
fairly new concept and we’re
dedicated to continue investing
and evolving the architecture
in partnership with our
customers to stay at the
forefront of technology and
help them overcome these new
challenges.
