“Celebrating the never ending tradition of Oregon State Ath-letics by continuing to honor its past, educate its present,

and prepare for its future; while connecting all who have

contributed to its legacy.”

In the spirit of camaraderie, Oregon State University’s Varsity OSU Association is dedicated to upholding the long tradition of athletic and academic excellence at Or-egon State. Varsity OSU serves its membership by en-hancing relationships among alumni letter-winners, cur-rent student-athletes, and current and former coaches and administrators.

The Beaver Athlete Sustainability Team is made up of Oregon State student-ath-letes who work toward the the goal of making Oregon State Athletics cleaner, more efficient, less wasteful and sustainable. Founded by student-ath-letes, the sustainability team identifies strategies and new initiatives surrounding sustainability, eco-awareness and improving our environment.

BAST has been honored on multiple occassions, includ-ing earning the Green Sports Alliance 2017 Innovators of the Year Award, and the Pac-12 Zero Waste Bowl Special Award for Athlete Engagement in the fall of 2016.

Initiated in 2011, Beavers without Borders is a pro-gram that offers global ser-vice-learning experiences for student-athletes at Oregon State University.

The program has success-fully completed eight service projects including trips to Gua-temala, Macedonia, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and most recently the Dominican Republic.

Throughout those trips, over 100 student-athletes were able to experience life in a distinct culture, learn about the impact of their work on a community and interact outside of the university context to maximize the intercultural ex-perience.

This year marked the first time in the program’s history that Oregon State Athletics has sponsored two Beavers Without Borders trips. In June, 21 athletes made the trip to Costa Rica, with another 10 heading to the Dominican Republic in August. The full list is below:

Against USC — » The Trojans lead the all-time series, 61-11-4, and

have won two straight games - in 2013 in Corvallis and 2014 in Los Angeles. » The Beavers are searching for their first win in Los

Angeles against USC since a 14-0 victory in 1960. The Trojans have a 23-game win streak at home ver-sus the Beavers. » The teams went to overtime in LA in 2001, with

USC winning by a field goal, 16-13. In 2009, OSU nearly overcame a 42-23 deficit in the fourth quar-ter, scoring the game’s final 13 points in a 42-36 loss. » USC has been unranked just once in the last 10

meetings between the teams. That was the 2013 matchup in Corvallis, won by the Trojans, 31-14. » Of those 10 games, USC was in the top 10 five

times and ranked first in 2004 (a 28-20 USC win), and 2008 (a 27-21 OSU win). » Sean Mannion threw for 123 yards and Storm

Barrs-Woods ran for 61 yards against USC in 2014, the last meeting between the teams. Among current players, Jordan Villamin caught one pass for 3 yards and Xavier Hawkins carried the ball twice. » Ryan Murphy had a 97-yard kickoff return for

touchdown in that game, the seventh-longest in Or-egon State history. » Saturday’s game marks the first for head coach Gary Andersen against USC. The Tro-

jans have not been on the OSU schedule since Andersen took over the program in 2015.

OSU/USC Connections — » Oregon State safety Jeffrey Manning, Jr., and wide receivers Andre Bodden and

Champ Flemings attended Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, as did USC linebacker Hunter Echols. » Oregon State senior Brandon Ar-

Conference, trailing only USC (fourth) and Arizona State (seventh). » All four of the Beavers’ FBS oppo-

California, Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon - are a combined 21-13 (.618).

Against The Top 25 — » Including this week’s game, the Beavers will be one of just seven teams nationally to

take on three top-25 foes this season. That list includes Florida State, Clemson, Stan-ford, Vanderbilt, East Carolina and Boston College. » Oregon State last played three top-25 opponents consecutively to close out the

2010 season. That year, OSU defeated No. 20 USC before losing to No. 7 Stanford and No. 1 Oregon.

Sixty-Five Candles — » Oregon State University is celebrating Benny Beaver’s 65th birthday this year. Ben-

Against ‘SC — » Derek Anderson threw for 485 yards against the the Trojans in a 2003 loss to USC.

He was 34-of-60 overall, and his 485 yards at the time set the OSU school record. That was eventually broken by Sean Mannion’s 495 yards versus Washington State in 2013. Anderson also threw for 330 yards against USC in 2004. » Ken Simonton ran for 234 yards against the Trojans in 2000, now the third-most in

Gary AndersenHead Coach | 3rd Season Gary Andersen was named the 28th head coach of the Oregon State football program on December 10, 2014. Named a semifinalist for the Max-well Football Club Coach of the Year

two straight seasons prior to being hired to lead the Oregon State football program, Andersen has experi-enced success everywhere he’s been. He has a 56-60 overall record in nine years as a head coach, which includes rebuilding programs at Utah State and Oregon State. He owns an 8-2 bowl-game record as an assistant or head coach, and was 2-0 in BCS bowls as an assis-tant. Andersen is the total package. In addition, to win-ning conference championships and bowl games, his student-athletes are also very successful off the field, earning numerous conference and national all-academic honors. Twenty-nine student-athletes have been named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team in Andersen’s two seasons at OSU. Andersen went to Wisconsin from Utah State, where he completely revitalized a program that had won just six games in the three previous seasons. The Aggies were 4-8 in Andersen’s first two years, improved to 7-6 in his third and then won a school-re-cord 11 games and the Western Athletic Conference title in 2012. It was their first outright league champi-onship since 1936. A native of Salt Lake City and a 1986 graduate of the University of Utah with a degree in political sci-ence, Andersen was a junior college All-American center at Ricks College in 1984, and a letterman at Utah in 1985 and 1986. Andersen and his wife, the former Stacey Lam-bert, have three sons, Keegan and twins Chasen and Hagen. Keegan is currently the assistant director of operations at OSU. For Andersen’s complete biography turn to page 80 of the 2017 Oregon State Football Media Guide or go to www.osubeavers.com.

BEYOND FOOTBALL Beyond Football aims to provide Oregon State Football student-athletes with an integrated, personally meaningful educational experience that provides them with a strong sense of self, understanding of civic engagement and the tools to succeed as productive professionals and global citizens. Thanks to the generous support of an Oregon State alumnus, the Beyond Football program is redefining the model for student- athlete development by taking an individualized approach that supports the holistic development of our student-athletes. Focused on three central tenets– EMPOWER, ENGAGE and PREPARE, the program aligns with Head Coach Gary Andersen’s commitment to developing student-athletes who succeed academically, athletically and socially. Through unique programming and innovative curriculum, our Beyond Football program develops young men who are capable of translating their athletic experience into success in life beyond football.

THREE CENTRAL TENETSEMPOWER

Encourage and provide opportunities that allow student- athletes to develop a strong sense of self and take personal ownership of their educational experience, growth and development.

ENGAGEFoster an understanding of volunteerism and civic engagement and a multi-faceted, rich undergraduate experience.

PREPAREProvide student-athletes and alumni with the tools and on-going support to acquire employment and succeed as professionals and global citizens.

Incoming freshmen student-athletes meet with Kayla Gross, Director of Beyond Football, upon arriving to campus. Freshmen meet with Gross bi-weekly during fall term to engage in programming focused on self-exploration, goal-setting and increasing familiarity with campus, team culture and resources.

Willis Whalen, Senior Manager of Player Affairs for the NFL Players Association presented on “Rookie Realities” of playing in the NFL during “Workshop Wednesday.” Workshop Wednesdays are held weekly during the off-season featuring lectures or workshops on topics related to professional or personal development.

(right) Former NFL player Freddie Scott presented on character and ‘Habitudes’ during Workshop Wednesday thanks to a new initiative and partnership with the NFL.

EMPOWERThe Beyond Football program takes an intentional approach to identity and character development by providing speakers and experiences that expand the worldview of our student-athletes. The program aims to meet the unique needs of each student-athlete by providing individualized support and quarterly one-on-one meetings with the Beyond Football staff to assess involvement and progress towards off-field goals.

For more information or to support the Beyond Football effort, contact Kayla Gross, Director of Beyond Football, at [email protected]

ENGAGE

PREPARE

Thanks to a generous sponsorship from Unitus Credit Union, 12 children battling serious or chronic illness received the ultimate VIP wish experience through our Dream Come True program

The Beavers were inspired by the strength of a young patient during a visit to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

The Coaching Staff and student-athletes contributed funds to fulfill the holiday wishes of two families with children battling childhood cancer in partnership with Children Cancer Association’s Hope for the Holidays initiative. The Beavers shopped for, wrapped and deliv-ered the gifts to the homes of the families.

Oregon State Football is committed to giving back to the community that supports it. The Beyond Football program provides weekly volun-teer opportunities supporting a wide variety of non-profit, institutional and charitable efforts.

(above) The Beavers participated in the Portland Trailblazers Career in Sports Networking Night at Moda Center.(right) Darell Garretson and Manase Hungalu were selected to attend NFL/Pac-12 Career in Sports Forum, a two-day event held at Pac-12 Network Offices in San Francisco.

Ten student-athletes embarked on a three-day networking and career development trip to San Francisco, Calif. in May. The Beavers met with executives from LinkedIn, Pac-12 Networks and the San Francisco 49ers and toured their facilities.

Encompassing experiential learning opportunities, networking trips, career prepa-ration workshops and one-on-one LinkedIn and resume consultation, the Beyond Football program aims to identify and secure opportunities for student-athletes to acquire professional experience. Tailored to the unique career interests of each student-athlete, the program features an innovative new curriculum to ensure adequate professional development and tracks progress towards off-field goals.
