SCOUTING THE OPPONENTHead Coach Randy Awrey is in his fourth season leading the Concordia-Chicago football program. An Iron Mountain, Mich. native with over 30 years of coach-ing experience dating back to his days as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Northern Michigan, Awrey enters the 2016 season with a career record of 123-98-1. The seeds for Awrey’s coaching career were sown during a stellar playing career at Northern Michigan where he was a four-year starter, playing both Defensive Back and Running Back. Awrey’s early coaching experience included stops at Westwood (Mich.) H.S., Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech and St. Lawrence (N.Y.). He has been inducted in the Athletics Hall of Fame at both St. Lawrence and Northern Michigan. Awrey’s first position as a head coach came in 1990 at Kentucky Wes-leyan, followed by the head coach’s job at Lakeland (Wis.), where he led the team to two IBFC championships, and three conference Coach of the Year honors. In 1999, Awrey became the head coach at D-II Saginaw Valley State, guiding SVSU to two GLIAC championships with the team’s first-ever playoff berth in 2000 and NCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 2001. Awrey returned to Northern Michigan in 2008 and served four seasons as their defensive coordinator.

Player to watch: Rashad Lofton returns for his senior season after leading CU-C in receptions (42), receiving yards (606), receiving touch-downs (5), and yards per reception (14.4) last year. Lofton also led the team as a punt returner, averaging 40.8 yards per return, including two touchdowns. He averaged 18.2 yards as a kickoff returner.

LAST MEETING VS. CONCORDIA-CHICAGO: This is just

the second meeting between Ripon and Concordia-Chicago,

with the only other coming in 1990, which is the year before

Head Coach Ron Ernst took the reigns of the Ripon program.

In that meeting, Ripon defeated the Cougars 52-6 under Head

Coach Bob Nielson. That was the midst of a five-game winning

streak by the Red Hawks, en route to a 7-2 record.

LAST TIME OUT: The last time Ripon’s football team took

the field, they helped Head Coach Ron Ernst achieve a tremen-

dous milestone. With a 27-7 win against Lake Forest in last

year’s season finale, Ernst earned his 160th career victory, which

set a new Midwest Conference Football record for career coach-

ing wins. In that game, Ripon’s defense forced three intercep-

tions, while holding the Foresters to 83 rushing yards. Ripon’s

offense more than doubled that rushing total, gaining 190 yards

on the ground, as Griffin McNeal and Cody Chase each scored

a touchdown. McNeal and Bradley Knoblock each passed for a

score as the Red Hawks built a 27-0 lead after three quarters.

LOOKING AHEAD: Ripon will continue their non-confer-

ence schedule next weekend when they’ll travel to UW-La-

Crosse. That will mark just the second time those schools have

faced each other on the gridiron, and first since 1935. That

lone meeting was won by the Red Hawks, 13-0.

NEWS AND NOTES FROMAROUND CAMP

SACKMASTER: Junior defensive lineman Brandon Bartel enters this season with 9.5 career sacks. That is just one and a half sacks shy of breaking into Ripon’s top 10 all-time. He is on pace to break the school record for career sacks, which is held by Charles Foreman (1995-98) and Matt Snyder (1992), who each recorded 17 during their career. Bartel was named First Team All-Conference last season after recording 51 tackles, 12.5 for a loss, and a team-high 4.5 sacks, which was more than twice as much as the second-highest total.

ERNST RELEASES INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS: Ron Ernst, head coach of football, professor of exercise science and assistant athletic director, has completed a four-set DVD coaching instruc-tional video for Championship Productions. The titles of the DVDs are: 3-3 Alignments and Creating Havoc for Offenses, Stopping the Run with 3-3 Stack Principles, Surface Read for 3-3 Defenses in Stopping the Run, and 3-3 Disguises and Pressures in Attack-ing the Passing Game. The four-set video is included in the most recent Championship Productions Video catalog which goes out to coaches around the nation and globally. Ernst earned the 160th win in his 25-year career Nov. 14, 2015. He has recorded the highest number of victories of any coach in the 95-year history of the Mid-west Conference, and is the only coach in the 124-year history of the Ripon College football program to win more than 100 games. He has compiled a winning percentage of .653 in his 245 career games.

WINNING WAYS: Ripon has been one of the most consistent teams in the Midwest Conference during the last several years. The Red Hawks have won at least seven of their 10 games in seven of the last 10 seasons. Under Head Coach Ron Ernst, Ri-pon’s football program has only experienced two losing seasons in his 25 years at the helm of the Red Hawks.

BUILDING OFF LAST YEAR: Sophomore quarterback Grif-fin McNeal is ready for his first full season as a starter in 2016. McNeal has three career starts, coming in the final three games of last season. In those games, he threw for 363 yards and five touch-downs, while rushing for 241 yards (5.0 ypc) and four more scores.

ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE: Ripon’s football team received 11 Academic All-Conference honors over the summer. Earning the distinction was Cody Chase, Justin Filter, Brett Garst, Logan Grahn, Cameron Mignone, Kyle Turner, Brandon Barnes, Jacob Diny, Brandon Latzig, Vince Stensrud, and Grant VerKuilen.
