DELAWARE-JACKSONVILLE SERIESDelaware and Jacksonville meet for just the second time this week and for the first time since the Blue Hens posted a 51-35

victory in the 2013 season opener at Delaware Stadium on Aug. 29. The Blue Hens scored 24 unanswered points to overcome an early two-touchdown deficit and cruised to the victory in the col-

lege head coaching debut for Dave Brock. Brock saw his team start out rocky but finish strong as the Blue Hens won their homeopener for the ninth straight season. Delaware’s aggressive attack piled up a whopping 611 yards of total offense - the highest fora UD team since 2000 - while the defense held the Dolphins to just 224 total yards and negative 37 yards rushing, the third lowesttotal allowed in UD annals. Jacksonville, which jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scored three of its touchdowns eitherdirectly off turnovers or from short distances.

Delaware quarterback Trent Hurley threw for 238 yards and a touchdown while running back Andrew Pierce piled up 101yards and a score and running back Julian Laing added 97 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Jacksonville saw quarterback Kade Bell hit on 18 of 34 passes for 261 and four touchdowns, including two scoring throws totight end Andy Robustelli.

LAST YEAR FOR DELAWAREDelaware posted a 6-6 mark during the 2014 season, the second under head coach Dave Brock, with the Hens placing fifth

in the CAA standings with a 4-4 slate. Among the Blue Hens victories were a 30-23 overtime triumph over eventual NCAA Tournamentqualifier James Madison on the road in October and a late-season 31-28 road victory at Albany. Delaware lost three games by atouchdown or less, including a 35-28 setback to #6 ranked Villanova in the season finale at Delaware Stadium when the Wildcatsscored in the final minute to clinch the victory.

LAST YEAR FOR JACKSONVILLEJacksonville posted an impressive 9-2 record during the 2014 campaign under head coach Kerwin Bell, including a 7-1 mark

in Pioneer League play. The 7-1 record would have been good enough to claim a share of the PFL title and an NCAA FCS Tournamentberth, however, Jacksonville withdrew from contention. The Dolphins won seven straight games at one point in the season and scored30 or more points eight times, good enough to rank 18th nationally in the FCS in scoring at 35.4 points per game and No. 6 nation-ally in total offense with 499.9 total yards per game.

DAVE BROCKA new era of Blue Hen football

began at the University of Delawarein 2013 led by Dave Brock.

Brock, a native of Moorestown,N.J. and a veteran of 22 collegiateseasons as an assistant coach,

became just the fifth head coach of the Blue Hens since 1940.The University has produced six national championships,

five national runner-up finishes, 20 NCAA Tournament appear-ances, 20 Lambert Cup trophies, three College Football Hall ofFame head coaches, and numerous All-Americans and NationalFootball League players during that time.

Highlighted by an exciting offensive attack and formida-ble special teams play, the Blue Hens found success in Brock’srookie campaign in 2013 as Delaware produced an overallrecord of 7-5 and earned a fifth place finish with a 4-4 markin the rugged Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware earnedvotes in The Sports Network Media Top 25 Poll every weekduring the season, peaking at the No. 15 spot on Nov. 4.

Delaware jumped out to a 7-2 start that included big vic-tories over No. 14 James Madison on Sept. 28 and a thrilling32-31 last minute triumph over eventual NCAA FCS nationalrunner-up Towson on Nov. 2. Two of Blue Hens’ five lossescame by just three points or less and the squad was an impres-sive 5-2 at Delaware Stadium.

A total of nine Blue Hen players received All-CAA noticeled by defensive tackle Zach Kerr, who earned All-Americannotice and an invitation to the East-West Shrine All-Star Gameand the National Football League Scouting Combine.

Kerr (Indianapolis Colts) was one of three Blue Hens tosign NFL free agent contracts following the season, joiningdefensive back Travis Hawkins (New England Patriots) andoffensive tackle Erle Ladson (Oakland Raiders).

Delaware scored 30 or more points eight times andranked No. 2 in the CAA in scoring offense (31.2 points pergame) and No. 3 in passing offense (240.0 yards per game). On special teams, the Hens led the CAA in net punting, blockedpunts for and against, and punt returns.

Boyle, one of the nation'stop tight ends, played in the prestigious Senior Bowl and wasselected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by Baltimore inMay. Enderson led the CAA and ranked No. 4 in the NCAA inpunting average (44.9 yards per punt).

Brock, 48, came to Delaware after serving one season asthe offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under coachKyle Flood at Rutgers University.

Big East title, and advance to the Russell Athletic Bowl. Prior toRutgers, Brock coached at Boston College, Kansas State, NorthCarolina, Temple, Hofstra, Salisbury State, and WesternConnecticut State.

“When we started this search process to begin a newchapter in our football history, we received tremendous inter-est from around the country,” said UD Director of Athletics EricZiady. “The interest speaks so highly of our University and ofour football program’s rich tradition. In the end, it was clearthat Dave Brock has the character, the experience, the passion, the recruiting skills, and the leadership qualities that willenable him to lead our program to championships on the fieldand success off the field.”

“The opportunity to coach at a place with such a storiedtradition, in the footprint of where I grew up and where I havecoached most of my life, is an honor for my family and I amhumbled by the opportunity,” said Brock. “The University ofDelaware represents excellence in academics and athletics andI want to thank Eric [Ziady] for inviting me into the family.”

The New Jersey native’s coaching career includes stops atNorth Carolina, Temple, Hofstra, Kansas State and BostonCollege. He has been an offensive coordinator for seven ofthose seasons and has mentored many NFL standouts, includ-ing Hakeem Nicks (Indianapolis Colts), Jordy Nelson (GreenBay Packers), and Marques Colston (New Orleans Saints).

JAMES ANDERSON TO SERVE AS HONORARY CAPTAINJames Anderson, one of the all-time great wide receivers in University of Delaware Football history, will serve as this week’s

Honorary Captain. The Honorary Captain program - which will continue to take place at each home this season - honors friends ofBlue Hen football who continue to make outstanding contributions. Anderson will be a special guest of UD Athletics throughout theday and will take part in the pregame coin toss at midfield.

A native of Iselin, N.J., James rose up through the depth chart and accomplished in just two seasons what many never did whileplaying for Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond during the 1987 and 1988 seasons.

He led the Blue Hens in receiving both seasons, hauling in 54 passes for a school-record 1,067 yards (19.7 avg.) and 11 touch-downs as a senior in 1988 when he earned first team Associated Press All-American honors and catching 42 passes for 682 yards(16.2 avg.) and six touchdowns as a junior in 1987. He earned All-Yankee Conference honors both seasons and led the league inscoring during the 1987. The Blue Hens went 7-5, captured a share of the Yankee Conference title, and advanced to the NCAATournament in 1988.

His career totals of 96 receptions for 1,749 yards and 17 touchdowns still rank among the all-time UD leaders and his eightcareer 100-yard games (in just 23 games) still ranks No. 4 all-time. He averaged 18.2 yards per reception during his career andhad six 100-yard receiving games in 1987.

A 1991 Delaware bachelor of science graduate in business administration, Anderson now resides in Avenel, N.J. and is a sen-ior claims service analyst for Allstate Insurance Co. He and his wife, Marie, have two sons, Darin and Donovan.

DAVID TINSLEY NAMED 2015 DELAWARE FOOTBALL CAPTAINSenior defensive lineman David Tinsley (Armwood HS/Seffner, Fla.) has been selected as captain of the 2015 Blue Hen

squad. Tinsley, a May, 2015 marketing management graduate of UD, is currently pursuing his MBA at Delaware. A fifth-year senior and four-year letterwinner, Tinsley retuns to the lineup as one of just seven seniors on this year’s squad. He

missed all but one game last season after injuring his arm in the season opener at Pitt. For his career, he has played in 20 gameswith one start and recorded 41 tackles, including one sack, and has forced a fumble. He missed five games with injuries as a red-shirt freshman in 2012 before playing in all 12 contests in 2013.

Tinsley becomes the first solo captain at Delaware since linebacker Dan Mulhern served in the solo role in 2002.

DELAWARE IN SEASON OPENERSUniversity of Delaware Football will open its 124th season since 1889 this week when the Blue Hens host Jacksonville (Fla.)

University. Delaware had won two straight season openers - having defeated Jacksonville (Fla.) 51-35 in Dave Brock’s Delawaredebut in 2013 and knocking off NCAA Division II West Chester (Pa.) 41-21 during the 2012 campaign, before falling at Pitt 62-0last season in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Delaware has won seven of its last 10 season openers, falling only to NCAA FBS members Navy 40-17 in 2011, Maryland (14-7) in 2008, and to Pitt last season during that span. Delaware has opened the season at home 10 times since 2001 and played anFCS in the lidlifter seven times during that span.

DELAWARE TOUGH IN HOME OPENERS Delaware is now 51-11 (.822) in home openers since Delaware Stadium opened in 1952 with the Blue Hens having won 10

straight and 23 of their last 25 home debuts in these friendly confines. Delaware defeated Delaware State 27-9 last season in thehome opener in a game that was played on Sunday, Sept. 7 after thunderstorms and heavy rains forced the postponement onSaturday.

DELAWARE VS. NON-LEAGUE FOES AT HOMEDelaware will take on its first of three 2015 non-league opponent this week at Delaware Stadium when the Hens host

Jacksonville out of the Pioneer League. The Blue Hens have enjoyed outstanding success vs. non-league opponents, especially athome where Delaware has currently won 22 of its last 23 contests against non-league foes. The Hens had won 22 straight gamesbefore falling to Sacred Heart by a 10-7 score last Oct. 4.

The Blue Hens had not lost to a non-league opponent at home since a 17-10 setback to former Northeast Conference member(and now a CAA member) Albany on Sept. 16, 2006. That win streak included NCAA Tournament victories over Delaware State in2007 and over Lehigh and Georgia Southern in 2010.

Delaware will host non-league foe Lafayette next Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. and close out non-league play Sept. 26 at NCAAFBS foe North Carolina.

EARLY SEASON SUCCESS AT DELAWARE STADIUMDelaware, which opened the 2014 season with home victories over Delaware State (27-9)

and Colgate (28-25), has now won its first two home games each of the last three years andhas a streak of 16 straight home victories in the months of August and September. The Blue Henshave not lost a home game in the months of August or September since a 16-15 setback toColonial Athletic Association opponent Richmond on Sept. 12, 2009.

HOME SWEET HOME Delaware boasts one of the top home-field advantages in all of college football. Not only

do Blue Hen fans turn out to Delaware Stadium each week - helping UD become the only NCAAFCS team in the nation to average 20,000 or more fans per regular season home game 12 sea-sons between 1999-2010 - they see consistently winning football.

Delaware has won 39 of its last 55 home games (.709) and is 296-96-4 (.754) in 62 sea-sons all-time at Delaware Stadium, including a mark of 20-5 with eighth straight wins in thepost-season. Delaware went 5-2 at home in Dave Brock’s first season at the helm in 2013 andthe Hens are now 9-5 here in his two seasons. The Hens have now posted a winning or .500 sea-son at home eight straight years and in all but two seasons since 1984.

Delaware ranked No. 6 in NCAA FCS in average home attendance in 2014, averaging15,682 fans per game. The Hens trailed only Montana (23,777), James Madison (19,816),North Dakota State (18,571), Montana State (17,056), and Liberty (17,016). Delaware hasranked in the top 10 nationally for average home attendance among FCS programs each of thelast 19 seasons since 1996.

BLUE HENS EXTEND SCORING STREAKS AT HOME, VS. FCS OPPONENTS,VS. LEAGUE FOES

A rarity occurred Aug. 30 when Delaware was shutout in a season-opening 62-0 loss at thehands of host Pittsburgh. The shutout loss snapped Delaware’s streak of 220 straight games scor-ing a point - a streak that dated all the way back to a 27-0 setback to Villanova back on Sept.14, 1996. It also marked the first time Delaware has been shutout on opening day since a 21-0 loss to Lehigh in the 1950 opener while also snapping a streak of 99 straight road games scor-ing a point. The 220-game streak was the longest among Colonial Athletic Association teams.

But the Hens still have three impressive scoring streaks still alive. Delaware has not beenheld off the scoreboard at home at Delaware Stadium since suffering a 24-0 setback to HolyCross way back on Nov. 12, 1983 - a streak of 211 straight games. And, since Pitt was an FBSopponent, the Hens have still scored a point in 207 straight games against FCS foes since the1996 loss to Villanova.

And one additional streak - the Hens have now scored in every conference game since the1996 Villanova game, a streak of 154 straight. The Hens will put that on the streak in the CAAopener Sept. 19 at Villanova.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: DELAWARE LEADS NCAA FCS WITH FEWEST SEN-IORS

Delaware is one of the youngest teams in all of NCAA FCS football. The Hens’ roster fea-tures just seven seniors, tied for the lowest total of any non first-year program and the lowesttotal in school history. The team list also features 52 first and second-year players - nearly 58percent of the active roster. Below is a list of NCAA FCS teams with the fewest seniors on the ros-ter in 2015.

7 - Delaware, Austin Peay 8 - Robert Morris, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, VMI 9 - Chattanooga 10 - James Madison, Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Samford, Savannah State, Morgan

State

Note: East Tennessee State has 0 seniors and Houston Baptist has 7 seniors but both arefirst-year programs.

QUARTERBACK FACTSGet ready for a spirited competition at quarterback for the Blue Hens this season. A pair

of Pennsylvania natives, Junior Blake Rankin, a second-year transfer from Rutgers, and JoeWalker, a redshirt freshman, battled throughout the spring and during the preseason to takeover the starting spot open with the graduation of three-year starter and fellow PennsylvaniaTrent Hurley.

Neither solidified himself as the starter so head coach Dave Brock expects to use bothuntil one rises to the forefront. Delaware last used a quarterback rotation to start the season in1999 when current UD quarterbacks coach Brian Ginn and Matt Nagy shared duties beforeGinn suffered a season-ending broken leg in the third week of the season vs. West Chester.

The Blue Hens have no quarterbacks with college game experience on the roster for thefirst time since the 1989 season. During that season, Bill Vergantino (yet anotherPennsylvania native) earned the starting nod days before the opener and led the Hens to a 28-21 win at Boston University. Vergantino went on to an outstanding career as a four-year starter, setting numerous school records and leading the Hens to Yankee Conference titles and NCAATournament appearances in 1991 and 1992. He is also a member of the UD Athletics Hall ofFame.

FLORIDA TIESDelaware will play Jacksonville University from Florida this week for the season opener. The

Blue Hens have five Floridians on the rostere, including sophomore linebacke Jalen Kindle(Fleming Island/Fleming Island, Fla.), junior kicker Kevin McLaughlin (Cardinal Gibbons/FortLauderdale, Fla.), junior offensive guard Will Lewis (Bishop Kenny/Jacksonville, Fla.), seniordefensive lineman David Tinsley (Armwood/Seffner, Fla.), and sophomore defensive linemanCedric Udegbe (Monteverde Academy/Minneola, Fla.).

MILESTONES AND RANDOM NOTES• Delaware will be looking to increase its caused turnovers in a big way this season. The Blue

Hens ranked last among all 121 NCAA FCS teams last season as they forced just 10 turnovers (fivefumbles and five interceptions) all season. The five interceptions was the lowest recorded total inschool history and ranked the Hens No. 113 nationally. Ironically, this week’s opponent, Jacksonville, led all FCS teams with 24 interceptions on a defense in 2014.

• Delaware has been an effective scoring team early in games of late. The Blue Hens havescored in the first quarter in 11 of its last 13 games since 2013 and has tallied a point in thefirst half in 11 straight games and 71 of the last 72 contests since the 2009 opener. Delawareaveraged 19.9 yards on its first offensive play of each game during the 2014 season, includinga 79-yard touchdown run by Jalen Randolph vs. Sacred Heart, a 75-yard touchdown pass fromTrent Hurley to Randolph vs. James Madison, and a 52 yard pass from Hurley to BrandonWhaley vs. Colgate.

• RB Wes Hills has rushed for 1,033 yards for his career • RB Jalen Randolph has rushed for 948 yards for his career and needs just 52 yards to

reach the coveted 1,000-yard plateau• Punter Eric Enderson ranks No. 1 among all active NCAA FCS punters with a career aver-

age of 44.95 yards per punt• DE Vince Hollerman is Delaware’s active leader for games played (35 - shared with

deep snapper Joe Fortunato) and starts (30) and for sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (15.5).With 72 tackles, he needs 28 to reach 100 for his career

• OT Ben Curtis has played in 32 career games with 29 starts and enters 2015 seasonhaving started in a team-leading 29 consecutive games

DELAWARE’S CAA SUCCESSDelaware has enjoyed great success in conference play since joining the Yankee Conference

(now the Colonial Athletic Association) back in 1986. The Blue Hens, who have won outright orshared nine league titles during that time, own the best record in league play among all currentCAA teams that have played more than two seasons, posting a record of 146-87, good for a .627winning percentage.

Delaware’s .627 winning percentage is tops among active CAA squads (and all CAA schoolsall-time for that matter), surpassing Villanova (131-88, .598), James Madison (103-76, .575),William & Mary (100-78, .562), and New Hampshire (222-182-10, .550) in the top five. Ziady noted that he is still looking to schedule an NCAAFBS opponent for the 2018 season.“These future schedules represent a great opportunity for theplayers in our program to compete against some of the best teams in the country,” said Delawarehead coach Dave Brock. “We look forward to the opportunity to compete annually againstsome of the nation’s best. This will create great excitement for our football team and for all thepeople who love Delaware football.”

Since the 2003 season, the Blue Hens have played eight games against FBS opponents, fac-ing Navy (2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013), Maryland (2008), and Pittsburgh(2014).

DELAWARE WELL REPRESENTED IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUEA total of 11 former University of Delaware football student-athletes were on National

Football League rosters this summer and as of this week, 10 are still with their teams during thepreseason.

All-Pro defensive back Mike Adams (Indianapolis), quarterback Joe Flacco (Baltimore),offensive linemen Gino Gradkowski (Denver), linebacker Paul Worrilow (Atlanta), defen-sive back Marcus Burley (Seattle), and defensive tackle Zach Kerr (Indianapolis) all playedlast season and are on rosters this fall as well. Burley was a member of the Seattle team thatadvanced to the Super Bowl for the second straight year. Also in NFL camps this summer are DERonald Talley (New York Jets), DB Anthony Walters (Arizona), OT Erle Ladson(Cleveland), and QB Pat Devlin (Cleveland). WR Mike Johnson was on the Philadelphia ros-ter this summer but was released on Aug. 30. CB Travis Hawkins is currently a member ofthe Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League.

Flacco led Baltimore to a Super Bowl victory and was named the game’s MVP following the2012 season. He will start for the Ravens for the eighth straight season this fall. Worrilow ledthe Falcons in tackles as a rookie free agent in 2013 and did so again in 2014. Adams, a 11-year NFL veteran, led Denver to the Super Bowl in 2013 and Indianapolis to the AFC title gamein 2014. He earned All-Pro honors for the first time in 2014.

In addition to the players, former Blue Hen quarterback Matt Nagy (Kansas City) servesas the Chiefs quarterbacks coach.

MORE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE TIESCurrent Blue Hen freshmen Kareem Williams and defensive end John Nassib also have

some strong ties to the National Football League as both have brothers playing with the NewYork Giants. William’s brother Andre, a 2013 Heisman Trophy finalist at Boston College, is a sec-ond-year running back with the Giants while Nassib’s older brother, Ryan, is a fourth-year Giantsbackup quarterback.

PRE-GAME WALK, POST-GAME ALMA MATER AMONG NEW DELAWAREFOOTBALL GAMEDAY TRADITIONS

Blue Hen fans are invited to join in on unique Delaware Football gameday experiences thatbegan during the 2013 season. Fans can come out and greet members ofthe Blue Hen football squad during pre-game as they march down StadiumDrive escorted by the Delaware Marching Band, Cheerleaders, and SpiritGroups on their way to the locker room.

The walk begins approximately two and one-half hours before kickoff.Fans were also invited to stick around after each home game and join theBlue Hens as they head to the southwest corner of the field to sing the almamater along with the Delaware Marching Band.

Also new in 2013, a member of the team who hails from the State ofDelaware led the Blue Hens out of the tunnel waving the state flag accompanied by a teammatecarrying the U.S. flag.

A BLUE HEN IN THE WHITE HOUSE...AND AT DELAWARE STADIUMWhen U.S. President Barack Obama and running mate, former Delaware Senator Joe

Biden, won the 2008 presidential election, it was big news. And even bigger news for the citi-zens of Delaware and those affiliated with UD. In November, 2012, Obama and Biden wereelected for another four-year term to lead the country.

A 1965 graduate of the University of Delaware with degrees in history and political science,Biden played on the Blue Hen freshman football team in 1961 under head coach ScottyDuncan but did not play varsity football after that. Biden, a member of the UD Wall of Fameand an ardent Delaware football fan, considered himself “a half-baked halfback” during hisbrief UD football career.

Biden made his first visit to Delaware Stadium as Vice-President on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2009as he attended the Maine game and sat with UD President Patrick Harker and current NewJersey Governor and 2016 Presidential hopeful Chris Christie (also a UD graduate) through-out the entire contest.

He made another visit to Delaware Stadium in 2010 when he attended Delaware’s 16-3 NCAAquarterfinal win over New Hampshire on Dec. 10. He also attended the Hens’ 2010 national champi-onship game in Frisco, Tex. with Christie and Delaware Gov. Jack Markell.

Biden met with then head coach K.C. Keeler and members of the team on Sept. 19, 2008 whenBiden’s plane was parked on the same tarmac as the Delaware charter at New Castle County (Del.)prior to its trip to Furman. Biden later made an appearance at the Blue Hens’ game vs. Maine atDelaware Stadium on Oct. 11, 2008.
