On behalf of myself & the Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals & Their Habitat, I would like to take this op-portunity to welcome you all to the Gala Under the Sea. Every year at our gala event, we try to highlight an issue facing wildlife in Kuwait. This year we want to turn your attention to the plight of our coastal waters & all the creatures that live in & around them. Kuwait’s marine habitat is teaming with life but is battling pollution, encroachment, overfishing, & more. One of K’S PATH’s core project areas is Marine Conservation. Our work in this area includes weekly beach clean ups in key habitat areas & extensive outreach to local schools. We are planning to expand these programs. Your generosity tonight will bring us one step closer to a cleaner Kuwait.

Welcome to the Gala Under the Sea.

A mira Behbehani is a Kuwaiti painter that began painting

with the Algerian artist Hamza Banou in 2003. Two years later

Amira had her first solo exhibition at Dar Al-Funoon Gallery en-

titled “Teacher & the Apprentice.” From 2006 to date Amira has

participated in several exhibitions at Dar Al-Funoon Gallery,

Gusto Gallery, Boushahri Gallery, Sultan Gallery, FA Gallery &

Tilal Gallery in Kuwait. Amira has also participated in exhibi-

tions in Paris, Qatar, Bahrain & Lebanon. In 2006 she submitted

a painting for the first anniversary of Canvas - a magazine de-

voted to art & culture in the Middle East - in Dubai. In May 2008

she was sponsored by Banana Republic Kuwait & in both 2010 &

2011 she participated in an auction with JAMM, Kuwait. In Au-

gust 2011, Amira designed the label for Kiehl’s Crème de Corp,

along with Zaha Hadid, Nadine Kanso & Aysha Depala. The pro-

ceeds were for Make A Wish Foundation, Dubai.

This painting is called SHADOW & PAST. Nowadays we don’t see

the shadow existing in photos anymore. With digital technology

we just lost a very important element of beauty & art. The first

thing they teach you in art school is how to highlight the shadow.

In primitive times, SHADOW was considered the soul & ego of a

human, so does Amira. She went through some black & white

photos of her mother & chose a photo to paint.

3 years and has participated in various exhibitions & competi-

universe whenever he feels the need to organize his eclectic

thoughts, accumulated daily. These are the incidents that mold

his personality & on which he depends for inspiration.

artistic journey, with so many artistic mediums he would like to

The artwork symbolizes the bright spirited & beautiful Arabic

woman & her importance in the community. Her role suppressed

& marginalized by the tyranny of the Eastern man, whose man-

made notions of her have confined her. The woman is not seen

as part of this planet.

O ne of the regions most established & highly regarded

contemporary artists. Totally self taught Jamal Abdul Rahim is

an artist of many facets. Some of his work has a curiously War-

holesque quality, while others cite Miro as a prevailing influ-

ence. Black & white canvasses are dashed, splashed or stroked

with colour. Simplistic sun imagery lies alongside squirls &

waves which overlay photo etchings. He is master of the print

making process, sculptor & bookmaker. Jamal’s modern touch,

which is often applied in a seemingly random fashion, is only

found in the most confident of artists.

Born in Bahrain in 1965 Jamal Abdul Rahim first pursued a ca-

reer as a fisherman but always knew he was an artist. He has

notched up an impressive portfolio of exhibitions throughout

the Middle East & Europe. His work is held in private collections

across the globe, & can be seen in countless Museums includ-

ing the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jordan & the British

Museum. The Asian Civilization Museum in Singapore recently

added Il Qalam - a lithograph to their collection. His work can

also be seen in the Four Seasons Hotel in London & the Ritz Carl-

ton Hotel in Bahrain.

B orn in Bahrain in 1954. The discovery of Ebrahim’s talent as a child preceded his formal academic years & his crude graf-fiti on the walls of houses could not go unnoticed. He worked as a calligraphist in the Ministry of Education in 1973 & in 1978 received a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Baghdad. Bu-Saad is a founding member of the Bahrain Arts Society.

Early in his career, Bu-Saad’s artistic knowledge flourished as a consequence of his surroundings; by way of the alleys, the people, the old quarters, the sea, the dows, the palm trees & the birds of the old town of Muharraq where he was born. For Bu-Saad, the environment is an essential component of an artist’s disposition. His recent work is the embodiment of the outcome of a consistently anxious search for new possibilities that reflect his desire to tackle controversial human issues occurring in to-day’s world.

A recipient of numerous awards, including first prize from the Emaar Art International Convention (Dubai, 2005) & the Golden Leaf Award for the GCC Exhibition (Oman, 2006). His works are in public collections in Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Kuwait & the UAE. He has participated in over 30 group & solo exhibitions in the Middle East, Europe & the Far East. Bu-Saad’s work, ‘Takasseem’ (2001) was recently acquired by the British Museum.

H rair’s artistic career has been crowned with success both

in Lebanon & abroad, with numerous exhibitions held in Europe,

the United States, the Arab countries, & as far afield as Japan.

He has obtained the Sursock Museum Prize & that of the Palais

de la Pracsidence in Beirut, & also the gold medals awarded in

the Sao Paolo Biennale of 1969 & by the Italian government in

1972.

Hrair’s dominant theme is the horse, symbol of male virility,

strength & mastery - the semi-mythical stallion & the centaur

sprung from the legends of Phoenicia & the ancient Orient.

Hrair is also a painter of Icons - The Annunciation, The Last Sup-

per, The Crucifixion - influenced by Byzantine art but transpos-

ing into his own almost fanciful idiom with an abundance of

life & colour.

B orn in 1939., Michael Cassidy, an architect, was encour-

aged to draw & sketch buildings but the drawings had little

emotional content or colour. He rediscovered watercolors when

he moved from London to the Cotswolds in the West of England.

After moving to Kuwait in 1995, he continued painting to help

him relax after long days. Cassidy held his first exhibition in the

Museum of Modern art in Kuwait in 2006.

Iraqi calligrapher (1917 -1973). He studied in Baghdad with

Mulla `Arif & then served an apprenticeship with Mulla Mu-

hammad `Ali al-Fadli. In 1944 he continued his studies in Cairo,

where he was taught by Sayyid Ibrahim & Muhammad Husni

at the Royal Institute of Calligraphy. After returning to Baghdad,

in 1946 he published a textbook on the riqa` style of calligra-

him diplomas in 1950 & 1952. In 1960 he was appointed lecturer

in Arabic calligraphy at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad

& later became the head of the department of Arabic callig-

raphy & Islamic decoration. Hashem followed the classical

Baghdad style of Yaqut al-Musta`simi & combined it with fea-

tures from the Ottoman school of calligraphy. He was among

the best calligraphers of the thuluth style. The other scripts he

favoured were naskh , nasta`liq , diwani , ijaza & muhaqqaq.

He supervised the printing of a manuscript of the Koran by the

Turkish calligrapher Muhammad Amin al-Rushdi, reilluminat-

ing missing letters, & adding other details. This Koran was pub-

lished in Baghdad in 1951, & a second edition was published in

Germany in 1966, for the supervision of which Hashem stayed

the Haydarkhana Mosque, the Muradiyya Mosque & the Bunia

Mosque. He also designed Iraqi bank notes & coins for Morocco,

Libya & Sudan.Untitled. Published by the Iraqi Cultural Centre London, 50cm x 50cm, 1978.
