In 2004 the car industry went through a period of growing tension as a result of theincreased demand for raw materials in eastern countries experiencing high rates ofgrowth. This, together with the productive overcapacity of fitters in western regions, ledto the sector finding itself in the predicament of facing significant increases in costs with-out these being compensated for by an increase in prices for their own products.

Despite this situation, throughout the past financial year, our Group maintained its level ofperformance and realised its growth expectations by increasing its turnover with respectto 2003 by more than 20%.

This was largely possible due to the positive diversification of our sales across clients andregions, making us less vulnerable to specific situations of weakness found in some markets.

I think it is also necessary to point out that, in line with its strategic plans, the Group iscontinuing to devote an important part of its resources - to be exact, 4.5% of its turnover- to Research, Development and Innovation.

This important commitment to the Creation of Technology has been acknowledged byawarding us the Premio Príncipe Felipe for Technological Innovation. This prize, which fillsus with pride, encourages us to continue advancing along the course we have set ourselves,in the understanding that staying out in front technologically-speaking in our various differ-ent product lines is the best guarantee of achieving progress and continuity for each ofthese. This is all to be done by fostering, at the same time, the creation of quality employ-ment in our country, where our largest R+D+I Plant is located, and in other states in whichwe have Development Plants, which implement the application of our technology in specif-ic projects carried out in collaboration with the technical departments of our clients.

With this in mind, I would like to emphasise and express my gratitude for the trust thatsuch clients have deposited in the technical teams belonging to our Group, making it pos-sible to use advanced stages of development in their vehicles to implement the solutionsthat improve the efficiency and performance of their products.

Likewise I would also like to say thank you for the trust and support that our Groupreceives from official bodies and financial institutions. In this respect and as a point wor-thy of mention in 2004, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that our partner-ship now enjoys the participation of the Group of five Savings Banks, Caja Burgos,Caixanova, Caja Castilla la Mancha, Caja de Ávila, and Caja Navarra, which, following thesubscription of a 20% stake of their capital, strengthens our financial structure by provid-ing it with the necessary resources for embarking on our plans for expansion in the future.

To conclude, I would like to emphasise that our vocation of maintaining sustainablegrowth by relying on our capacity to innovate, the professionalism of our developmentactivities, the quality of our products, and the competitiveness of our companies, all fallwithin the framework of our medium and long-term plans, which, over and above the spe-cific circumstances pertaining to the market, place us amongst the partners trading in theauxiliary sector of the car industry in a position that offers greater security for the future.

Following another year of business activity, last December senior executives fromthe ever-growing ANTOLIN family held a meeting to review the past and set acourse for the future.

Mr José Antolin, Chairman of the Com-pany, welcomed everyone present andoffered a brief assessment of the eventsof 2004.

Our Chief Executive Officer, Mr Temiño,was then charged with analysing themost representative figures of the pastfinancial year, and also with informingeveryone of the main features of theorganisational restructuring process theGroup is currently undergoing.

TERRITORIES

D O E S S Worthy of mention arethe splendid results of the partnerships lo-cated on the Iberian Peninsula and particu-larly in Brazil, which make the Europe/SouthAmerica Region maintain, and even in-crease its importance in the overall result.

As significant facts, we would like to pointout the procurement of orders for over-head-concealment systems, meaning thatan important path for growth has beenopened up within our strategic productlines, consolidating us as experts in over-head systems.

D O N A A Mr Temiño congrat-ulated this Territory, since despite the dif-ficulties currently experienced by theAmerican car manufacturers and the in-crease in the price of raw materials, thefoundations are being built to achieve ourobjective of implanting all our productlines in North America.

We have managed to create an openingfor our roofs with three new clients. Wehave achieved an initial and extremely im-portant order for roof consoles. Door mod-

ules have been developed with a highdegree of satisfaction on the part of theclients, and finally, technical and commer-cial activity has been initiated involvingseats, widening our horizons, and thus en-abling us to view the strategic budgets wehave set out with confidence.

D A A P With respect to theAfrica-Pacific Asia Region, specific mentionwas made of the remarkable increase insales achieved there, virtually doublingthose of the previous financial year, andwith very satisfactory levels of performance.

It is important to emphasise the impor-tance of promoting our technical andcommercial presence in Japan, where weshould be able to raise the trust of ourclients and become one of their mainsuppliers.

FINANCIAL DATA

Furthermore, as far as the figures for theyear are concerned, the followingturnover was recorded with respect toproduct and client.

A C C O R D I N G T O P R O D U C TFor the first time in our history, turnoverfor the door function exceeds the rooffunction, thanks to the excellent saleson models fitted with our door modules. In 2008 an increase is observed in sales forseats in the overall figure, basically due tonew models starting and a new orderfor frames, as well as the possibility ofintroducing this product line in the Amer-ican market.

The door and roof functions will maintainsteady positions in future, with an impor-tant business field being opened up in thelatter in concealment systems, an exam-ple of the splendid joint action by the De-partments of Research, Innovation andEngineering and Projects.

A C C O R D I N G T O C L I E N TDespite a certain amount of dependenceon three large customers, thanks to theprojects that will come to fruition in thenext few years, we foresee a more bal-anced distribution in future.

Technical and commercial efforts willbe upgraded in the Japanese market toturn us into allies of the Japanese suppli-ers and thus gain a sales turnover withthese clients.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

We find ourselves in a market situation thatis going through hard times, where main-taining the minimum returns on our invest-ment, required to guarantee our financialhealth, is proving to be extremely difficult.

Nevertheless, our policy for action inthese circumstances, just like in any kind

of difficult ordeal, ought to be positive, and for this reason we should concen-trate on doing what we are capable ofachieving:

· Doubling our efforts to achieve greaterproductivity by applying the systems andtools of Total Quality with greater energy.

· Introducing noticeable improvementsin the intrinsic quality of our products.

· Actively improving the items we con-sume.

· Taking on a more pro-active commer-cial role.

· Managing our development with evergreater efficiency.

In short, we should improve our manage-ment procedures and be more competi-tive, going back over the basic elementsof our activity and type of business.

NEW

ORGANISATION

After months of reflecting on how to ad-vance towards the future more efficient-ly and for the purpose of improving man-agerial aspects, Mr Temiño presented thenew structure of the organisation, whichresponds to the following criteria andobjectives:

Organisational objectives considered:

· Strengthening the view of the product.

· Strengthening quality assurance.

· Developing an advanced system formanaging suppliers.

· Promoting the purchase of componentsin low-cost countries.

· Coordinating and fostering activities forimprovement.

Finally, Mr Temiño asked for extra ef-fort on the part of everyone, who, in ad-dition to carrying out their usual tasks, will have to devote an important amountof energy to launching and developingthe new organisation. At the same timehe also declared how proud he was inbeing able to count on a human teamthat was so devoted and competent, which undoubtedly gives us the edgeover competitors and, despite all the dif-ficulties mentioned previously, makesGRUPO ANTOLIN continue to be a win-ner in our market.

DESIGNING THE FUTURE

The value of

differentiation

It is no longer sufficient to sell at acheaper rate: it is fast becoming moreand more important to offer the productwith added value. In order to do this, cre-ativity and innovation are now funda-mental tools.

Through Design and Innovation, impor-tant strategies for differentiation are pro-posed, since on many occasions, designsand lines of work for the future are sug-gested in advance.

It is important to be aware of the worldaround us, the trends of each sector,to handle information from many differ-ent areas, and also to investigate and ex-periment on a continual basis so as to bein a position to offer innovation withsound judgement.

The automobile sector is evolving veryquickly, and our clients think in termsof bold and even futuristic concepts. They want to offer the end user differentsensations, touch, comfort, ergonomics, freedom, safety… in short, to invest inthings the end user will appreciate.

One example is the research conduct-ed on new materials, the use of exist-ing materials in different applications, and the use of green, recycled or recycla-ble materials. Another possibility en-tails making maximum use of other as-pects of the interior, such as lighting orcommunication and multi-media. Thesewill all help to display the main bene-

fits of the product, shaping its imagethrough the various different sensationsthat these items can convey.

Knowledge and application of such awide variety of topics provide a source ofinspiration for the creator, a business op-portunity for a company and experiencesfor the user.

Within a company that places an empha-sis on innovation, it is important to be in-volved in projects that invite research ona long-term basis, since this is the bestway to innovate.

One of the missions of the Designers isto study the world around us, the trendsand also the social and cultural factorsof everything that is relevant to the

product, in order for this to be subse-quently reflected in the projects we de-velop. This should all be done with carebeing taken over the product-user inter-face and the coherence and harmony ofeach element with the design as awhole.

In general terms, we might talk about“added value” as being an item thathelps increase a company's competitive-ness, but also as the element that helpsimprove people's quality of life.

Design concerns the solution of prob-lems, with the processes, with the finalquality, with innovation, functionality, the use of resources, economic develop-ment and last but by no means least, with shape.

Hidden under fairly bold geometricshapes lie the real concepts to be used insubsequent development.

Integrated functions, innovation in materi-als, contrasting colours, mixing the naturalwith the artificial, ergonomics and comfort, large transparent surfaces that let the lightin and give a greater feeling of space andfreedom. The use of direct lighting to pickout shapes and forms, the customised useof space with “plug and play” accessoriesand the introduction of new technologiessuch as “head up displays” and micro-pro-jectors are just a few of the ideas the DesignDepartment at Grupo Antolín, togetherwith collaborations from other areas, hasnow started work on. And this will almostcertainly help our products create importantvalues of differentiation.

If we take a closer look at the manufac-turers located in this market (see chart be-low), we can see that the builder with thegreatest share of the market is Suzuki-Maruti, a firm that was originally a 50/50Joint Venture between Suzuki Motors andthe Indian government, but in whichSuzuki now has a 55% controlling inter-

est. Suzuki-Manuti's main productionplants are located in the capital of Delhi. After Maruti, the following on the listare the local group Tata Telco and the Ko-rean Hyundai, who have set up their glob-al base of operations for the Hyundai Atosmodel in Chennai and plan the construc-tion of a second plant. Apart from these,

we should also point out the presenceof international car-makers such as Toy-ota, Ford, GM, Honda and Fiat, other in-ternational companies that are starting tomake their first incursions such as Renaultwith its Logan model, along with thatof other local consortiums: Mahindra &Mahindra and Hindustan Motors.

SPECIAL

As we mentioned in a preview in the previous issue of the news bulletin, the Indianeconomy is growing quite significantly, and the car industry in particular has experiencedan annual rate of growth of more than 20% over the past few years. This growth is basedon both an increase in domestic demand, and also on sales for exportation.

As you well know, a few years ago nowwe started up our activity in India witha production plant located in Pune, where, after some initial difficulties, wehave managed to position ourselves onthe market, where we clearly occupy aleading rank. So as to bolster our posi-tion, last year we reached an agreementwith the local firm Krishna Maruti Ltd.(KML) to form a new JV located in Delhi, from which components could be sup-plied for the largest Indian car manufac-turer, which, as we said before, is Suzu-ki-Maruti. Our partner KML is the biggestmanufacturer of seats for the Indian mar-ket, but they also produce door panelsand other components for the interior ofthe vehicle for Suzuki-Maruti.

That agreement has now become a real-ity and on 27th January we had thepleasure of attending the inaugurationfor this partnership. GA was represent-ed by Ernesto Antolín and Pablo Baro-

ja. The ceremony was also attended bythe two top men from Suzuki-Maruti, MrTakeuchi and Mr Kattar, together withsenior executives from the various differ-ent departments. On our partner's side, the event was attended by the Chairmanand main shareholder, Ashok Kapur, theDirector, Sunandan Kapur, plus senior ex-ecutives.

The plant is in Delhi, strategically placedat a distance of 25 km from our mainclient. It is worth noting the swiftness withwhich the project has been carried out, starting last year in August 2004 and nowdelivering mass-produced roofs. It hasan installed capacity of nearly 500,000roofs per year.

However, considering the number of or-ders already agreed with clients, we arenow thinking of increasing such capacity.

We would like to take the opportunityhere to welcome to the Group all thosemembers of this new partnership and inparticular to congratulate their man-ager, Mr Guruprit Singh, for such a greatjob carried out in record time.

We are convinced that such a great startis only the beginning of a new journeythat will bring us all a great deal of satis-faction.

THE HISTORY CORNER

On 24th December 1898, a strange, newvehicle christened “Voiturette” in French, climbed the steep hill in Lepec Street inMontmartre (Paris). It marked the open-ing of one of the most important chaptersin automobile history. From 1898 to 1944the company had a single, indisputableleader: its founder and creator, LouisRenault, who had only one passion in life:his little factory located in Billancourt,on the outskirts of Paris.

His early operations enjoyed the financialsupport of his brothers, wealthy business-men, and his genius for mechanics. Hepatented the system using a direct gear-box, which was soon adopted by manufac-turers all over the world. Next he registeredother patents, with one of the most strik-ing being that of the turbo-compressor.

Another important event was the intro-duction of the notion of the division ofwork (Taylorism) in France. Around thetime of the outbreak of the First WorldWar, Louis Renault's firm was exportinga substantial part of its output. It had of-fices in New York and Tokyo, and twoplants in Russia. Around 1919, Renaultwas the number one private company inFrance.

A landmark for the make in the 1920s,along with the production of locomotives, was the launch of the 40CVC, a vehiclewhich in 1926 beat the world record forspeed. In order to provide quality assur-ance and guarantee its sources for raw

materials, and obtain the lowest costspossible, the company produced every-thing it needed, from the steel right downto the tyres. Contrary to what happenedin Citroën, its main rival, Renault adopteda policy of diversifying its range of prod-ucts so as to reduce risks, distribute itsearnings and financing its own operationson its own.

Around the outbreak of the Second WorldWar, the company had installations in sev-eral parts of France, Belgium and GreatBritain. During the German Occupation,Louis Renault kept his plants operating andtook orders from the German forces. Thusthe Billancourt plant was the number onetarget for British bombers in 1942, who de-stroyed a large part of the industrial in-stallations. However, these were re-built,and returned to production. Following theliberation of Paris, Louis was taken pris-oner. This fact marked the end of an era.He died on 24th October 1944.

The growth of thecompany

In 1945 the firm became a company of theFrench state under the name of Régie Na-tional des Usines Renault. Its first success, the 4CVC, was a car for everyone. The pol-icy of Total Quality implemented in 1988allowed success and revenues to be re-newed.

After being converted into a Public Limit-ed Company in 1990, the firm was priva-tised in 1996. In 1999, the Alliance with theJapanese car manufacturer, Nissan, al-lowed Renault to enter the market ofSouth East Asia and return to Mexico, ac-quire Dacia in Rumania, and Samsung inKorea in 2000, along with the contractwith Volvo for lorries, which have all en-abled Renault to become an actor ofworldwide stature.

The Alliances

The alliance with Nissan was formed on 27th

March 1999, based on the creation of atwo-nation group. Renault invested 5,400million dollars in the Nissan consortium, ac-quiring 36.8% of the capital of Nissan Mo-tor and 22.5% of the capital owned by Nis-san Diesel, and the purchase of the Euro-pean financial subsidiaries belonging to theJapanese group in their entirety.

On 29th September 1999, Renault acquires51% of the capital owned by the Ruman-ian car manufacturer, Dacia, for a total of50 million dollars. In May 2001, this shareis increased to 92.72%. Renault will investaround 220 million dollars in Dacia in a pe-riod of five years to re-position it on themarket thanks to a technical and produc-tive plan. IN BRIEF

With your opinionwe're on the rightpath2004 is the year chosen for checking the pulse ofour organisation, to see what our “climate” is like, using the Survey that Grupo Antolin has been car-rying out every two years since 1994.

Important innovations have been the perform-ance of the whole process internally withoutthe help of any kind of external consultant, theoptically read format used, the use of only onepage for the entire questionnaire, and the in-clusion of more open questions, which leds ourpeople have a greater freedom of expression.

This edition has enjoyed the participation of73% of our staff around the world. A sig-nificant improvement compared to the 66%that took part in the previous climate survey(2002). Congratulations to everyone for theircollaboration!

A value of 2.82 in the scale of satisfactionof our employees as opposed to 2.79, the val-ue obtained in 2002, is a clear indicator thatinternal “climate” of the Group has improvedover the past two years. Achieving a furtherincrease in this value is one of our main ob-jectives.

Broadly-speaking, from this survey, and sum-marising the answers given in both the closedand open questions it can be derived that weform a strong Group in specific areas suchas companionship, teamwork, satisfaction, autonomy in the post, and a strong sense andpride of belonging to Grupo Antolin. Weneed to improve in other areas such as find-ing a balance between work and private life, recognition for work well done, and our com-munication systems, both on a vertical andhorizontal level.

After the results of the Climate Survey wereanalysed, this information was communicat-ed to each company forming part of theGroup throughout the months of Februaryand March 2005, and also to the Group'sManagerial Board.

In each company, a working group has beenset up to define an Action Plan for Improve-ment, covering those aspects that have cometo light in the Survey as being areas or ques-tions in that need improvement, this way re-sponding to the expectations of our people.

Visit by theDelegatefrom theGovernment

The GenevaMotorShow is 100years old

The neutrality that characteris-es Switzerland is reflected in itsMotor Show and this is one ofthe main reasons why more andmore manufacturers attend thismeeting in March which is amandatory meeting point in thecar industry. Our clients pre-fer to show off their most sig-nificant innovations for the nextfew years on neutral soil.

But if there is one thing thatthe Geneva Motor Show hasalways been famous for it isthe huge number of proto-types that are presentedthere. Geneva is used as ashowcase for the technolo-gies of the future to measuretheir impact on the generalpublic before decidingwhether to put them intomass production. The springshows, such as Geneva andDetroit, might be said to beshows for experimentationand future prospects, where-as the autumn shows, suchas Paris and Frankfurt, are forconfirmation.

There are a multitude of inno-vations this year, of which themost striking are the small ve-hicles, product of the PSA-Toyota alliance; the CitroënC6 saloon, the VW Passat, the mini MPV VW Golf Plus, the BMW 3 Series, the ClassB and M Mercedes, the OpelZafira, the 4-door Focus, theNissan 350Z, the Lexus IS, thePorsche 911, the JaguarXK… The prototypes thatstand out include the mini3-seat ZOE from Renault, theSAV5 four-wheel drive fromFord, the Yeti crossover fromSkoda, the 4x4 Zaroot sports

car from Nissan, and the ex-ercises produced by the mostfamous bodywork designers.

Grupo Antolin's Marketingand Design departments at-tend the motor shows on asystematic basis to echo thelatest trends in the industry asone of our sources of inspira-tion for developing newproducts and designs for ourclients. The large variety ofmodels, the fusion of seg-ments and new niches in themarket that emerge in the in-dustry in a kind of frenziedfashion require us to keep upto date so as to guaranteeour competitiveness in thesector.

Regarding latest trends, panoramic roofs with a widerange of consoles for stor-ing objects continue to burston to the scene with greatforce. The models that offersix or seven seats are still verytrendy. But perhaps the mostsignificant new feature is theincrease in the offer of smallvehicles which is on the risefor economic and environ-mental reasons.

On 22nd February the work-ers at Grupo Antolín were pro-vided with a new tool in In-tranet: the employees' portal:person@GA

person@GA has come intobeing with the intention ofbecoming an e-HR Centre,a single, customised channel, where the employees can in-teract with Human Re-sources. When we enter thisportal, we will find the fol-lowing areas:

• The new WHO'S WHO, eas-ier to surf and with more in-formation.

• A surfable ORGANISATION-AL STRUCTURE

• SELF-SERVICE FOR THE EM-PLOYEE, where we can ac-cess our PERSONAL DE-TAILS, ORGANISATIONALDATA, AREA OF PERSON-AL DEVELOPMENT, andPAYSLIP (to date, Spanishcompanies)

• TRAINING OFFER

• COMMUNICATION Section:News Bulletin

• INTERNAL JOB VACANCIES

• Section for the PREVEN-TION OF WORK-RELATEDHAZARDS

• Request for CANTEENVOUCHERS (Main Office)

The greatest added value ofthis portal is SELF-SERVICE FORTHE EMPLOYEE, which con-sists of the following sections:

• PERSONAL DETAILS: Towhich only the employee inquestion has access. Onlythey can view and modifythis information. HumanResources will receive warn-ing to validate such modi-fications.

• ORGANISATION DATA: Thiscan be viewed by the em-ployee and their boss. Theinformation has been up-dated since 2001.

Little by little, further optionswill be added to those al-ready provided by this newPortal.

At Human Resources, wehope to continue to receiveyour suggestions so that wecan go on extending and im-proving this new tool.

At the end of FebruaryGRUPO ANTOLIN PA-LENCIA passed the initial cer-tification audit in accordancewith the new regulations withflying colours.

Therefore, they will soon ob-tain the certification for theirenvironmental managementsystem in accordance with ISO14001:2004, thus becomingthe first company in the Groupto do so.

The new standard ISO14001:2004, published in No-vember last year, replaces andrescinds the 1996 version. It isworth noting that this is the firsttime that a sole version has be-en published in Spanish. Pre-viously the standardisation bodyin each country was responsi-ble for translating the official ver-sions in English and French. Thisnovelty has led to the harmoni-sation of Spanish, to achieve onesingle comprehensible transla-tion for everyone, albeit detri-mental on occasions to regio-nal usage of our language.

The main changes introduced by ISOStandard 14001:2004 are as follows:

· Relevant importance accorded to assess-ment of compliance with the law.

· Strong implication of contractors and sup-pliers in the environmental managementof the organisation.

· Alignment with common elements forquality management systems.

· Emphasis on the efficiency of the systemto achieve optimum environmental per-formance.

The changes that are introduced will notentail any radical change of the Environ-mental Management System implantedat Grupo Antolín. So it will not be nec-essary to carry out any extraordinary au-dits for adaptation to the new version.

Nevertheless, the shared documenta-tion has been reviewed to bring it into linewith the new terminology and to intro-duce additional requirements.

Until 15th May 2005 companies mayopt to conduct initial audits for follow-up or renewal with ISO version14001:1996 or version 14001:2004.After that date, all audits should be con-ducted in accordance with the version for2004.

No one that is reasonably well informed to-day would dispute this statement from ex-perts at WHO (World Health Organisation).

What does it meanto smoke?

Smoking is not just a habit. It is also adrug addiction, since smoking tobaccomeets all the criteria that define the useof a substance such as: tolerance, de-pendence, withdrawal symptoms, com-pulsive behaviour, etc…

Components oftobacco smoke

Almost 4,000 substances have been de-tected in tobacco, a large number ofwhich are detrimental to health. Ofthese, those that stand out for theirharmful effects are the following:

Tar and other substances are responsiblefor tumours and cancers caused by to-bacco. Carbon monoxide mainly caus-es cardiovascular diseases, since it re-

duces the blood's capacity to carry oxy-gen. Nicotine is responsible for physicaldependence. The nicotine is present inthe bloodstream for an average of 2hours, and as its concentration lessens, symptoms appear that encourage thesmoker to smoke again. Irritants, such asacrolein, phenols, prussic acid, etc leadto constriction of the bronchial tubes, stimulation of the mucus-secretingglands, and the cough that is so typicalof smokers. In short, they disturb the de-fence mechanisms of the lung, pavingthe way for infections and the onset ofchronic bronchitis and pulmonary em-physema.

Smoking isdangerous

Tobacco has been shown without anydoubt to be directly involved in the maincauses of illness and death that occurin our environment. It is thus consideredto be responsible for over 90% of thecases of lung cancer and chronic respira-tory diseases, and also for 25% of car-diovascular diseases. However, an addic-tion to nicotine is also the cause of oth-

er cancers (bladder, kidney, pharynx, buc-cal cavity, amongst others). This toxichabit not only causes serious illnessesand processes, but also worsens thecourse and prognosis of many other clin-ical cases, such as gastroduodenal ulcers, diabetes, bronchial asthma, cataracts, etc. Furthermore, it leads to the prema-ture ageing of the skin.

For every four people that smoke, onewill meet an early death because ofsmoking. Many of these smokers mighthave lived another 10, 20 or 30 years. Wecould sum up by saying that being addict-ed to tobacco is responsible for 15 to20% of overall mortality in our country.

It is worth giving up

The deterioration in health caused bysmoking is accumulative; that is to say,the earlier you start to smoke, thegreater the long-term danger. The ben-efits obtained from giving up smokinghave a similar accumulative effect. Thesooner you stop smoking, the sooneryou start to achieve benefits for yourhealth.

HEALTH

Smoking,

The use of tobacco is the main cause of preventable illness anddeath in developed countries.

What is in it for meif I stop smoking?

Health

· As soon as you stop smoking, the bodystarts to eliminate the toxic substances intobacco.

· After 20 minutes, the blood pressure andpulse rate will start to return to normal.

· After 8 hours, nicotine and carbonmonoxide in the bloodstream will be halftheir previous levels.

· The senses of taste and smell are gradu-ally recovered.

· Blood circulation improves.· Coughing, tiredness, and gasping for

breath gradually disappear. It is easierto do exercise.

· There is less propensity to colds and oth-er respiratory infections.

· There is less risk of gastroduodenal ul-cer and faster recovery from an ulcer-ous rash.

· There is a greater likelihood of having anormal pregnancy.

· The danger of suffering from heart diseaseor dying from lung cancer diminishes.

· Lung capacity may be recovered. Insome cases, there may be irreversibledamage, but in all events, even in thesecases, the process becomes stable with-out becoming any worse.

Appearance

· The skin and face recover frompremature ageing caused by the toxicsubstances in the tobacco smoke.

· The smoker's bad breath, their stainedteeth and fingers, the smell on theirhands and clothing vanish as soon asthey stop smoking.

Co-existence

· Family members and friends can enjoycleaner air.

· The children of non-smokers havefewer respiratory problems, and areless likely to become smokers

Finance

· Have you added up how much youspend each year on smoking? You aresure to think of other pleasures tospend your money on.

Nicotine withdrawalsymptoms

When a person stops smoking, they mayhave withdrawal symptoms for the firstfew weeks. Many smokers have fewsymptoms or even none at all. Very fewsmokers experience all of them, and inany case, these are only temporary. Themost common symptoms are usually thefollowing:

· Anxiety· Irritability· Finding it hard to concentrate· Drowsiness or insomnia· Headaches· Tiredness· Gastro-intestinal disorders

(stomach upsets)· Hunger· Desire to smoke

Why do I cough more now that I'vestopped? The appearance of more cough-ing than normal is due to the fact thatthe lungs start to recover their functions ofcleansing the respiratory system to elimi-nate mucosities. For this reason it is a signthat the lungs' defence mechanisms are re-covering. Around 20% of smokers havethis symptom, which soon disappears.

Wage war on the Syndrome

And what do I do about my urge tosmoke? ? Think that just as you got theurge, so it will disappear. The extreme sen-sation of needing a cigarette does not goon forever; it only lasts a few moments, anddoes not build up throughout the day. If youare capable of resisting the first few mo-ments, at the end of the day you will bepleased to see that you have managed towin your fight with tobacco. Rememberthat with each day that passes, you willhave less and less craving to smoke and itwill be easier and easier to control.

Recommendations:· Take a deep breath and try to practise

some form of relaxation technique.· Do exercise· Drink water or fruit juice.· Keep busy.· Avoid coffee and drinks with caffeine.· Avoid stodgy food. Follow a diet that is

rich in fibre.· Select your food, avoiding items that in-

crease your urge to smoke.· Keep something to 'nibble' close at hand:

fruit, sugar-free gum, liquorice sticks, etc… Don't increase your intake of foodthat is rich in calories.

· Increase the number of hours you sleepand rest.

· Save the money you would have spent onsmoking each day in a piggy bank. Useit to reward yourself for the effort you aremaking.

· Instead of going out for a drink, use thealternative of going to the cinema, thetheatre, etc…

· Pick up the telephone with a pen in yourhand.

· Don't think that you will have to spendthe rest of your life without smoking. On-ly worry about today. Just think: I'M NOTGOING TO SMOKE TODAY

How long will that itch to smoke goon for? The pressing urge to smoke weak-ens in the second or third week after giv-ing up. Once you are over the first month, the urge to smoke becomes less and lessintense. There will come a time when dayswill go by without you thinking aboutsmoking, and later on you will only re-member at specific moments.

No matter how strong yourdependence on tobacco,

your urge to smoke will notlast forever.

ON THE WAY

Its long history of prosperity started when the shogunatewas founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603. At thattime, Tokyo was known as Edo, which had grown in the18th century to become an enormous city with morethan a million inhabitants, even overtaking London…

TOKYOthe city of the future

... Throughout this era, the Emperor residedin Kyoto, which used to be the nation'sofficial capital. The Edo Period lasted for al-most 260 years until the Meiji Restorationin 1868, when Tokugawa's shogun dynastycame to an end and imperial rule was re-stored. The Emperor moved to Edo, giv-ing it the new name of Tokyo. Tokyo thusbecame the capital city of Japan.

It is currently the centre of Japan for po-litical, economic, and cultural activitiesalong with many others, as well as be-ing the place from which information is is-sued and distributed.

The former Edo was divided into “Ya-manote Region” (the “Upper City”) and“Shitemachi District” (the “Lower City”).The “Upper City” was at one time occu-pied by the houses belonging to the up-per class of Edo society. The commonfolk in Edo lived in the district of the

“Lower City”, such citizens being crafts-men and tradesmen. Even today, life inTokyo throbs to a different beat depend-ing on whether we are in the area ofthe “Upper City” or the “Lower City”.The former is now the centre of impor-tant business and trade, and the latterhas the atmosphere of the centre fromtimes gone by, where people are stillknown for their generosity and braveryas natives of Edo. In the heart of the cityis the business centre Chiyoda Ward, withthe cultural centre of the old town of Edoto the east, and to the west, the city ofShinjuku with its skyscrapers and seatof the government of Tokyo. At the sametime, around the main stations are spreadenormous shopping centres, shops andareas full of restaurants and their in-evitable allies, places for nightlife and en-tertainment.

Tokyo is a clean and safe city, easy to getaround in and do things. The city's lowcrime rate and efficient public trans-port are well known. It can occasional-ly offer you a surprise. Visitors arriveexpecting a city of the future and areamazed to find aspects that have beenhanded down from the past.

A popular idea of contemporary urban de-velopment in Tokyo, “cities within a city”are complexes of one or several buildingsincluding shops, entertainment and recre-ational installations, offices, restaurants, hotels and residential districts. In recentyears, the public in Tokyo have had a cityrevealed to them within the city every fewmonths: Roppongi Hills, Shiodome, Odai-ba, Ebisu Garden Place, etc.

Music concerts and plays, opera and bal-let, native dances and musical fantasies

all form part of the usual range of liveshows on offer. To this is added Kabu-ki, the most striking theatrical traditionin Japan, providing popular entertain-ment since the Edo Period, which is pre-sented in regular programmes in Kabuk-iza and at the National Theatre. Stagecostumes and amazing special effects. All the actors are men.

Climbing up to the top of a skyscraper orsimply going for a stroll round the streetsfull of neon lights is another good wayof enjoying yourself in the city. Go fora ride along the aerial highway to en-joy a panoramic view of the lights atnight, interrupted by the Tokyo Towerand the Rainbow Bridge. Finally, crossover to the new city on the side of thebay to enjoy a spectacular view of thedazzling array of Tokyo lights that rise upfrom a sea of darkness.

It is difficult for there to be something inthe world that you cannot buy in Tokyo.Apart from the large department storeswith their huge selection of Japaneseand imported products, it can be amus-ing to wander into those parts of Tokyothat specialise in certain ranges of prod-ucts, like Akihabara for electronics, forinstance, or Jimbocho for old books,Kappabashi for kitchen utensils, andNakamise Shopping Arcade in Asakusawith stalls selling traditional souvenirs.

Japanese cuisine offers a great variety ofdishes and regional specialities. With110,000 restaurants to choose from inthe city, it may be assumed that the cityhas an amazing choice of culinary ex-periences to offer. There is a completerange of international cuisine, preparedwith 100 per cent authenticity,or elsewith a Japanese touch.
