Chairman’s Message

Under the Special Interest umbrella the Chamber has three active committees hard at work for Chamber members:

Community Action Committee is charged with identifying and organizing Chamber sponsored activities that recognize the relationship that exists between business and non-profits in Arlington. Volunteer Arlington Day, usually held the first Saturday in May, is a great testament to this commitment. Member volunteers fan out in the community on that day to assist non-profits with special projects and activities that otherwise would go undone. This past year 100+ volunteers worked 400 hours on 18 projects to realize the needs of 15 non-profit companies. A special THANK YOU goes out to Ed Rea, Mark Byers, Randy Anderson, Connie Francis, Pat McDermott, Jon Breeding, David Schmucker, and Cate Murray, who made Volunteer Arlington Day the success that it was!

The Community Action Committee is also the entity organizing the Nonprofit Community Resource Guide for Chamber members that will bring an electronic version of Chamber members’ capabilities and services on-line to Chamber members and guests visiting on the Chamber website.

The annual not-for-profits focused Breakfast Connection is planned for September 22, 2005. Plans for speakers and topics of interest to non-profits are all being considered.

Our Education and Workforce Committee has been busy this year planning their activities that connect Arlington’s businesses with the newest members of the workforce, bringing some new energy and ideas and allowing the thriving business community an opportunity to be mentors to our young adults. A great example of commitment and making the most of our contacts. This summer the committee is supporting the efforts of the Arlington Career Center and its outstanding PRIME internship program. In the fall, look for the second annual business/school executive exchange—details will be available soon.

Our Hotel Committee has been reorganized under this umbrella to provide a forum for those in the hospitality business to get together and share their com-mon interests and how the Chamber can help promote them. Let’s encourage them to use the Chamber to reach their goals. At a recent meeting, the group heard about and discussed in depth major issues that could greatly affect their properties: BRAC, deprivitization of solid waste collection, affordable housing, and the status of the proposed conference center.

If you’re looking to participate in a Chamber committee, you’ll find the effort rewarding when you pick one of the “special interests” groups (participation in the Hotel Committee is limited to hotel General Managers.)

Committee Announcement

The Chamber is pleased to announce that Susan Anderson of Community Residences has assumed the chair of our Community Action Committee effective July 5. The Chamber wants to thank Ed Rea for all of his hard work and dedication to the committee.

When you build a new hospital, you

get a chance to make a lot of changes.

At Virginia Hospital Center we’ve

made major changes that are good for

the patients and good for the business

of the hospital.

Nearly 93% of the

people who come to a

hospital leave shortly

after their procedure.

Less invasive

procedures and the

latest diagnostics have

replaced older methods that required

an overnight hospital stay. As a result,

the whole flow of a hospital has

changed and we took two big steps

to help all the “same-day” patients.

Almost 65% of all surgeries are now

classified as “same-day”. This trend

has forced many hospitals to retrofit

their existing facilities and they end

up with uncomfortable spaces not

designed for the job. Our new hospital

was designed with same-day surgery

in mind. Now it’s easy to get to and

easy to get around. Our paperless

processing speeds up admissions and

computerized scheduling keeps us

running on time. We’ve doubled the

number of pre- and post- operative

recovery rooms. And

each one is private.

All this makes it much

more comfortable for

the patient.

Nearly everyone

who visits the hospital

needs some kind of

diagnostics or imaging procedure. This

makes Radiology & Diagnostics our

busiest department. To handle this

volume, we doubled its size. We added

systems that eliminate film by storing

images electronically and reports can be

generated in minutes instead of days.

Practicing the best medicine is our

only goal at Virginia Hospital Center

and that means we are practicing good

business. So if you spot a trend that

affects 93% of your customers, you do

something about it. Stat.

Good business empowers good medicine.

“Gallstones to the left, hernias to the right, hysterectomies in front of me,” and other things

we fixed about same-day surgery.
