Everyday Excellence

Over the course of the past five weeks, the grade 8 students of NIS have been working tirelessly on the creation of their Social Sustainability Entrepreneurship ideas. Groups of three or four students worked together to create a product that would relate to one of six global contexts. Finally, last Wednesday, parents and the school were able to view the culmination of weeks of hard work and sweat. The business acumen and critical thinking skills of all groups were on display.

!!The strong tradition of NIS involvement Model United Nations and Speech and Debate was reinforced over the weekend (February 27th and 28th), when our school played host to the ACAMIS “Think, Speak, Act” festival. We welcomed over 300 students from all ACAMIS regions, including Mongolia and Taiwan, to participate in events over weekend, which included competitions, panels and Sunday

workshops.

Most of the Model United Nations panels passed their

resolutions, with all delegates having the opportunity to speak and convey the perspectives of the various countries they represented. The competition in Speech and Debate was fierce, though NIS stood strong and were proud to place first and second in

the following events:

High School Division (10 - 12) •!Suraj - Impromptu Speaking Champion (for the

third year running) •!Suraj and Kevin - Debate Runners Up Middle School Division (6 - 9) •!Emily - Oral Interpretation Champion •!Amy and Ahjna - Debate Runners Up

A definite highlight of the weekend was the formal dinner held on Saturday night in the PAC, where all delegates and participants had the chance to mingle, and form new friendships or maintain bonds already created in past events.

This festival was organised primarily by Grade 11 student Derron and his able team, Mu-Chian (Morris), Suhun, Nahyun and Jungyoon, with the support of Mr. Bob Cofer (Director of MUN) and Ms. Katie Ham (Director of Speech and Debate). Bob Cofer [email protected]

SCISAC GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The team travelled to Xiamen on Thursday the 25th of February for our first SCISAC Volleyball Tournament. This highly entertaining team was; Serena the Captain (who continued our tradition of winning very few coin tosses), Hibah, Felicity, Gloria, Daphne, Lena, Ines, Maria, Samin and Sally.

The girls had a challenging start playing the team that went on to be undefeated for the entire tournament. They finished in 3rd place overall after a tough, close battle with YCIS. The highlight of the tournament was the 2nd set against TIS where the girls displayed the most heart, soul and gritted determination I have ever seen to recover from a 16-24 deficit (it was 9-21 at one stage), which is almost unheard of in volleyball, to win the set 26-24. Serena served 10 points in a row with support from a disciplined Lions team. An outstanding effort by all and one that they will surely remember! Thanks to Ms Lucia for all her help and support and thanks to the girls for a great season! Coach Weatherly

SSL CHAMPIONSHIP MEET 27 & 28 FEBRUARY, 2016

This year’s championships attracted over 900 students from 17 different international schools and clubs across the Shanghai region. Many of our Sea Lion swimming squad met the required qualifying times in different events. The final availability and attendance for this event was 34 athletes.

Our 11 and over swimmers were in action during day one. What a period of competition it proved to be too. By 11:30pm 31 events had been swum resulting in 24 personal best performances being set. Two of these performances also broke impressive school records. At the day’s end, our exhausted but elated athletes had set 53 personal bests within 92 events.

During day two all members of our 10 years and under team were determined to follow the lead of their older peers. Despite obvious nerves and moments of uncertainty the team finished the day with 27 personal best performances set during 42 different events. Once again, two new school records were set.

Our sincere congratulations should be given to all participating athletes. What a team we are developing here at NIS once again!

The swimmers listed below deserve special mention, either setting new school records or winning top 3 placement medals within their event. In addition, 23 NIS swimmers were placed in the final top 8 as individual point winning athletes in their respective age group.

In closure I must highlight the continuing efforts of the swim teaching & coaching team here at NIS. Thank you Martin, Grace, Tony, Alex, Damon, Shawn & Mary, and our chaperones for the weekend, Nick & Anna.

Next event, ACAMIS on March 17-19. Stay tuned!
