FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Exams Our senior students have recently completed the school exams. These exams are designed to give students an indication of how they are performing with respect to the required standard for NCEA. At the end of the term an interim report will be posted home for senior students. It would be appreciated if parents of senior students discuss this report, focusing on what support they can provide to assist students on their study efforts leading up to the exams in November. Extra Curricular Activities Last week several extra curricular events took place involving our students. The kapa haka performed at Polyfest in Dunedin on Thursday evening. The same evening, in the school hall, the senior drama students performed a theatrical item. On Wednesday evening the girls rugby team achieved a win after persevering all season. Congratulations to all students involved in these events plus, on behalf of our school community, a big thank you to all the adults who assisted in ensuring these events took place. PPTA Strike It has been confirmed that teacher members of the Post Primary Teachers Association (PPTA) will strike on September 15 and a notice has been sent home via the log book concerning this. Teacher Only Day As was stated last week, the PPTA strike was obviously an unknown event when, in October last year, the teacher only day on Friday September 17 was planned. A teacher only day is planned well in advance in order to organise it and ensure the school is open for the required number of days. This teacher only day involves several

schools, hosted by Blue Mountain College. It is unfortunate that this now means that two interruptions will occur in the one week. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Katoa Wayne Edgar Principal

HABIT OF MIND Persisting Persevering on a task even though the resolution is not immediately apparent. Stick to it! I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live

the rest of your life like a champion.' (Muhammad Ali)

GST INCREASE Accounts have been posted out for monies owing to the school. It would be appreciated if these could be paid as soon as possible. Goods and Services Tax increases on 1st October to 15% and this increase will be reflected in future school charges.

Toko Girls’ Rugby; First win in like Forever! Toko Rugby Girls literally smashed the Otago Girl’s team with an outstanding 60/15, scoring a try in the first intense five minutes. The first try was straight away made by Shauna Fischli, who bowled right through the backs and dived onto the try line. By the second half Otago Girls managed to retrieve a couple of tries but Toko snuck back up and bit them on the try line again and again and again. Many of the Otago Girls were hammered into the ground, but no serious injuries were sustained, except for some of the smaller girls who were absolutely caned throughout the game. Otago Girls showed bad sportsmanship but they played well and made it fun for our girls. And to add to the great day, a masked male streaker stole the ball at a conversion and attempted to kick a goal but failed and had a crowd of girls hysterically laughing at him. As said by Maia Giles “The game was thrilling, and finally winning a game was the best feeling ever.” Thanks heaps to Mr Cambridge and to our awesome co-coaches Mr Alexandra, Karl, occasionally Dylan for being there and supporting us. And thanks to our Captain Zain Star. By Giuliana Fischli

REFUNDS AND CHANGING YOUR MIND You don’t actually have the right to return goods for a refund if you just changed your mind and decide you don’t want them. A shop doesn’t have to give you a refund if: ☼ You decide you don’t want the goods. ☼ You find the same thing cheaper elsewhere. ☼ You bought something for someone else that they don’t like or already have. ☼ You bought clothes that don’t fit. ☼ You bought something that doesn’t match what you already have. But they do have to give you a refund if they told you that you could get one.

South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament 'We are Toko that's our name, playing netball is our game, dodging, driving, shooting too, that's what we came here to do!' This was the team chant before every game when Tokomairiro High Schools 'A' Netball team were at our annual tournament up in Blenheim. On Saturday the 28th of August, 11 girls and 4 adults travelled to the annual South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament. This year it was held in 'sunny' Blenheim which meant a long drive. We stopped over in Kaikoura on Saturday night and arrived in Blenheim on Sunday to wet weather. We decided to have a practice anyway to get used to the courts. The 'B' and 'C' grade teams had to play outside while the 'A' grade teams played in the stadium. We had an 11am game on Monday morning against Murchison. The girls started off slowly and were down at halftime but managed to catch up and settled for a draw of 16 all. That afternoon we played Queen Charlotte and this was probably the best game we have had as a team all season. It was a very intense and close game and we stayed strong against our very pushy opposition. Right through the game until three quarter time we were even but a few goals in a row by our opposition in the final quarter led to us losing 29-24. After the game we went and bought plastic tubs and bags of ice and once we were back at the Motel we had to sit or kneel in the ice then jump into the hot shower which was very beneficial for our aching muscles. Tuesday morning was very wet for our 8.30am game against Roxburgh Area School and unfortunately they got away on us after the first quarter and we got a bit of a hiding. It had dried off by our afternoon game against South Westland and this time the team was amped up. This was another close game and we won 22-17. Wednesday morning was another later start and we played our neighbours, Lawrence Area School. Both teams played hard but Tokomairiro came out with the win 30-16. An improvement was still needed by us though. That afternoon was another very tight tough game against Collingwood but the younger members of the team really stepped up and everybody kept their heads high and did not let the opposition get to us, and I am very pleased to say we won 18-17 after nearly giving our coach a heart attack. More hot/colds were needed that night for us too and then afterwards we went to the movies to see 'Step Up 3'. Thursday was our last day of tournament and it did not end on the bright note which we had hoped for. We had a great first half against Amuri Area School but due to our own mistakes, plus the heavy rain which did not help, we lost it in the second half. Our last game against South Westland was similar. It was another close game against this team but unfortunately this time they were the winners. After our last game we headed to the pool to do a recovery session and then went and watched the 'A', 'B' and 'C' finals in the stadium which were awesome to watch. The 'C' grade was between Roxburgh and Queen Charlotte. We had played both of these teams in our first round so it was interesting to watch them play off for the final. Roxburgh played good consistent netball to come out the winners. At every tournament selectors are out watching the girls play and I am very pleased to say that this year Amanda Williamson was one of the 7 girls out of about 160 in the 'C' grade to be recognised as a Talented Player. We are all extremely proud of her, well done Moo! A big thank you to the community for supporting the 'A' netball fundraising and to the School Student Council for donating some money towards it. A huge thank you to Wendy Flett and Jeanine Harrex who were our managers, washing and drying our uniforms and organising things, to Mrs Tapp for accompanying us, driving her car up and cooking meals and of course to Nikki Milford, our coach who was always supportive and positive whatever the results of our games were. We all had a great time away and I think everybody learned a lot. Julia Flett 'A' Team Captain

Trophy Voyage On the 16th of August this year, 10 Tokomairiro High School students and their teacher Ms Stone departed from Milton to travel to Auckland to undertake a “trophy voyage” on the Spirit of New Zealand yacht for 5 days. The Trophy voyage is a slightly different concept from the usual Spirit of New Zealand voyages – it is a trip where 10 berths are offered specifically to Year 10 students from schools all over New Zealand and 4 selected schools come together on one voyage to complete challenges and tasks in competition for the honourable “Spirit Trophy”. The Year 10 group from Tokomairiro High School, which was made up of 5 boys and 5 girls – Lucy Pringle, Elese Lloyd, Caitlin Brock, Vicky Scurr, Kayla Graves, Brandon Orr-Clark, Jerry Lockhart, Josh Knox, Logan Allison and Rhett Hammersley – were dedicated competed well which ensured that they were successful in coming out on top and winning the 2010 Spirit trophy voyage 584a. The team were delighted with their efforts and success in achieving this. The yacht departed from Auckland and then sailed around the Hauraki Gulf for five days while the students competed in numerous on deck and onshore challenges as well as learning many new skills and meeting lots of new people on the boat. The students were taught the basics of sailing, the way a yacht is run, skills such as knot tying, adjusting sails, how to work together as a team in lots of different situations and building team spirit both in their school groups and with the other schools on the yacht. Every morning everybody on deck had to get up at 6.30am in the morning and jump off the side of the yacht for a “very refreshing” swim! It

was freezing, but everyone participated and were wide awake for the morning duties once they had dried off and warmed up. One of the highlights of the voyage was seeing a pod of dolphins and a couple of unique types of duck (which became nicknamed as the “Toko Duck”) as well as swinging off the long rope at the front of the boat and letting go into the water which is called the Yard Swing. The trip was fantastic and an experience that the students will remember for the rest of their lives. The students would like to thank the community and school for their support, specifically the Rotary club, the Lions Club, PTA, School Council and the teachers who helped make the trip possible.

Playcentre Best Bloke Awards 2010 Milton Playcentre Best Bloke Awards 2010 was a huge success on Friday night with over 150 people attending who enjoyed a fantastic night's entertainment by our eight contestants in the competition. Milton's Best Bloke for 2010 was awarded to Willy Robertson (sponsored by Clutha Licensing Trust), 2nd Best Bloke was Dean McCrostie (sponsored by Graeme Paul Motors), and 3rd Best Bloke was Neil Cockburn (sponsored by Ferguson Firewood). The boys also competed in a Rifle Shoot hosted by the Milton Smallbore Rifle Club earlier in the week and the winner was Jock Kain, with Icky Carruthers 2nd and Willy Robertson 3rd. Another task set for the blokes was to bake and decorate a cake which was auctioned on the night as well. The combined total raised for the cake auction was $545 with the top bid of $120 going to Willy Robertson's cake. Some of the challenges on the night included eating a can of baby food, drinking a bottle of beer, doing 10 press ups and then sawing off a block of wood. There was also a Zumba® challenge which was hosted for us by Alicia Horwood who put the guys through their paces and really made them sweat! And of course there was the all important fashion parade which was absolutely hilarious with even our guest judges (Craig and Destry) dressing up for the evening. Our Auction packages raised us a total of $1360 and the Mr Personality contest which raised a combined total by all of the guys of $263 and was won by Willy Robertson. Our huge thanks to everyone who attended and helped in any way towards making our evening the success it was. We had a lot of fun putting it all together and were thrilled with the support we received from all the businesses and those who came along on the night. We will have a final tally of money raised so look out for next week's Genesis. All funds raised will go towards developing a roading area within our playground and the purchase of ride-ons for the children. Photos: Willy receiving his award, and Alicia putting the men through their paces in the Zumba® Challenge.

Highland Dancing Success Jessica Michelle (7) and Amy Lockhart (8) recently participated in their first level Highland Dancing exam. Both girls spent several weeks preparing for this exam and it paid off with both girls passing with high scores. The exam involved 15 p r e c i s e d a n c e techniques, including Demi Plies, musical appreciation and deportment and poise. Amy competed last weekend in a competition in Dunedin and had 2 first placements, a second prize and 2 commended. Amy and Jessica currently travel to Mosgiel one day a week for practice, but if enough interest was shown in the Milton area, lessons in Milton might be considered. Any one interested in starting their children in highland dancing (boys can do it too!) can contact Raye Lockhart on 417 8550 or Lee-Anne on 417 7472.

Vacancies at Tokomairiro

Waiora Incorporated The sign over 80 Union Street, Milton, used to read “The Coffee Pot.” It now says “Tokomairiro Waiora.” There is almost as much foot traffic to this busy office as there was when sandwiches and cakes were sold. TWI was started as an initiative of Ngā Whānau O Tokomairiro when it became apparent there was a need for local co-ordination of health and social services in the community. Dunedin is less than an hour away by car, but public transport is almost non-existent. Even with a car, sometimes knowing where to go and even what help is actually required can be daunting for healthy, able, citizens, but overwhelming and demoralising for those with problems. In 2006, in conjunction with the Otago District Health Board, Ngā Whanau organised a community hui (meeting) as it was recognised Milton had a growing Maori population and whanau support was needed. A working party was established, and then a project coordinator was appointed. Funding applications were successful, enabling the search for a whanau ora worker, and locating suitable premises. With help and support from Internal Affairs, Public Health South, Kai Tahu Ki Otago, Te Puni Kokiri and various local interested parties such as Milton Community Health Trust, a contract was obtained from the Otago District Health Board. The Dunedin based Kāi Tahu Ki Otago became the governing body. Dawn on 4 August 2007 revealed an unusual amount of early morning activity in Union Street, and the Coronation Hall. The powhiri for the opening of the Waiora Office was underway. Newly appointed whanau ora worker Dolly Ngapo-Hill was formally welcomed to the position with the best wishes for the success of the venture from local Runaka, the Mayor, Bruce councillors, and the Milton community. Mrs Ngapo-Hill has grasped the job with both hands, and has organised successful health expos in the town, sharing health checks, nutrition programmes for children and young people, as well as supporting clients in finding help they need from health and social services. After two years, in 2009, an independent Board of local trustees was elected, and Tokomairiro Waiora became incorporated in its own right. Ngā Whānau O Tokomairiro Inc now provides four board members, and the remaining members are nominated from the wider community. The AGM is on Tuesday 5 October 2010. A vacancy has arisen and anyone interested in joining this progressive board is welcome to enquire at the Office, 82 Union Street, Milton, phone (03) 417-8430 for details, or from the Board Chair, Leeanne Phillips, (03) 417-7451. TWI is fulfilling a need, and it is obvious that there is a need for another whanau ora worker. Careful ‘bean’ counting has allowed for another part time worker, and advertising is underway. If this is the job for you, please check out the advert in the situation vacant section, or contact TWI Office as above.

“Sung Evensong with St Paul’s

Cathedral Choir” It is many years since I have heard sung evensong. Sitting in my pew in our old parish church the fidgeting and chatter would stop as the choir assembled at the back and we would rise to join them in one of the fine evening hymns while they progressed up the aisle to take their place in the choir stalls. That was a long time ago but on Sunday, September 19th at 5pm we are in for a treat. St Paul’s Choir, under the leadership of David Burchell will be holding sung evensong in our little and now warm church. Those of you who watch “Praise Be,” will have seen David many times, playing the organ and conducting choirs, not least the City of Dunedin, of which he is choir master. He is the organist at St Paul’s Cathedral and head organist for Norma, the Town Hall organ. We are talking real music and it is all going to happen in Milton at St John’s. These days, because of falling congregations, we tend only to hold services in the morning so the evening service has been forgotten and we rarely sing the evening hymns. On Sunday we will have the opportunity to take part again in the evening service we remember, led by a magnificent choir and a fine organist. There will be no sermon, instead the choir will be singing some fine anthems for us to enjoy. Everyone is welcome, regardless of denomination. It is a golden opportunity, perhaps a one off, for the folk of Milton to enjoy such beautiful music in our town. Soup and rolls will be served after the service and folk will have the opportunity to meet David and the Choir. Please join us, you are all welcome. There will be an offertory to support those affected by the Canterbury Earthquake. Glen Taylor

Milton Senior Citizens Report A good attendance at last Friday’s meeting in the Tokomairiro Parish Hall. Disappointment for those booked in for the 14th September Trip on the Trans Alpine Train to Greymouth with two nights in Christchurch, accommodation problems due to the earthquake. Entertainment for the afternoon was provided by the Clutha singers. A twelve strong choir, eight ladies and four men with their competent pianist Margaret Wardell. Starting their repertoire the choir sang, “On the Sunny Side of the Street” reflecting the weather conditions of the day. A selection of Mexican songs followed with, “Mexican Serenade and Spanish Eyes,” being popular. The male choir members gave us, “Stout Hearted Men,” and a further selection of numbers. Sandra Booth from Balclutha and May Rutherford were the raffle winners. A further bracket from the full choir including, “Singing in the Rain and Tea for Two” followed by an excellent afternoon tea concluded an enjoyable afternoon. Coming Event 26th September – Outing to Sinclair Wetlands 8th October – Shiela Charles at the Westside 15th October – Balclutha Concert

Secondary tax rates reduced The secondary tax rate will reduce from 1 October 2010 to align with the new personal income tax rates. The new PAYE tables effective from your employee's first pay period ending on or after 1 October 2010 will include the new secondary tax rates. ACC earner levy The current ACC earner levy is 2% (GST-inclusive). It increases to 2.04% on 1 October 2010 due to an increase in the GST (goods and services tax) rate on that date. We have included the increase in the updated PAYE deduction tables and calculators. Company tax rate changes The company tax rate is changing from 30% to 28% from the 2011-12 income year. Depreciation changes Up until now a 20% depreciation loading has been available for qualifying items. This depreciation loading has now been removed. The new rule applies to eligible assets for which binding purchase contracts were entered into after 20 May 2010. You can also no longer apply for special depreciation rates for buildings, effective from 20 May 2010. GST changes GST will increase from 12.5% to 15% from 1 October 2010. You can calculate the GST content of a GST-inclusive amount as follows:

• for 12.5% divide by 9 (for transactions that occur on or before 30 September)

• for 15% multiply by 3 and divide by 23 (for transactions that occur on or after 1 October). Filing your GST returns Monthly, two-monthly or six-monthly GST returns that are filed for the period ending 30 September 2010 will use the 12.5% rate but you'll need to use the new 15% rate from then on. We’ll send your GST returns with the 15% rate for periods ending on or after 1 October as usual. GST returns filed every two or six months may span the date of the GST rate change. In this case you'll be sent a two-part transitional return to account for the 12.5% rate for the period up to and including 30 September 2010, and for the 15% rate for the period from 1 October 2010 until the end of your return period. You’ll receive your one-off transitional return, with information on how to complete it, before the end of your first return period that ends after 1 October. You’ll then file normal GST returns at 15% for periods subsequent periods. Other changes There’s more information about Budget 2010 at www.ird.govt.nz/changes. Inland Revenue’s compliance focus programme We recently released our annual compliance focus programme, Helping you get it right: Inland Revenue’s compliance focus 2010-11. It gives you a detailed description of our compliance plans for this year. We believe that raising awareness of the compliance issues we’ve identified and are focusing on will give you an opportunity to review your own situation and check that everything is in order. As a result, overall compliance should improve. The compliance issues highlighted in this year’s programme fall under five key themes:

• Making sure everyone pays their fair share

• Targeting businesses operating in the hidden economy

• Getting it right at source

• Proactively managing debt

• Making it easy to do online.

To ensure you understand our compliance activities and how they may affect you, please read Helping you get it right: Inland Revenue’s compliance focus 2010-11. It’s on our website at www.ird.govt.nz/compliance/.
