Food Pantry
Guardian Angels Parish is fortunate to have a food pantry
to assist with the hungry in the Westport and Roanoke
neighborhoods. We do utilize Harvester’s for the bulk of
our food items in our pantry, but we rely on the generosity
of parishioners for both food and personal care items.
Current food needs: Corn flakes or cheerios, canned
corn, canned vegetables, peanut butter, tooth brushes and
toothpaste.
Lenten Bible Study
Fr. Ed has scheduled a Lenten bible study that will take
place on Thursdays at 11:00 am as follows: March 5,
March 12, March 19, March 26, April 2, April 9. Fr. Ed’s
plan is to have a period of teaching, a period of reflection
and about 20 minutes of sharing. Fr. Ed asks people to
bring snacks to share.
Second Collection Next Weekend
Next weekend, we will have a second collection for our
food pantry and for help with utility payments on an
emergency basis for the needy. Thank you in advance for
your generosity.

St. Joseph Table and Pasta Dinner The St. Joseph’s Table will be Thursday, March 19 in the Our Lady of Hope cafeteria. In addition to the Table, we will have a Pasta Dinner. It will take place on this date from 11:30 am until 7:00 pm. There is no set cost for the dinner, but they will gladly accept free-will donations.
We Need Helpers!
On Monday, March 16, 2020, we have a guest speaker by
the name of Alan Ames. Mr. Ames is a known visionary,
who spent the majority of his life in Australia. He is
author of the book "Through the Eyes of Jesus.” We
need help on this date; if you can help with this special
event, please contact Andy Fox at [email protected] .
Please Save This Date
This year, our beloved Westport Community Festival,
which is on June 7th, 2020, is a community affair. It is
for the community and hosted by our community and it
can not succeed without each of us giving some of our
time, our talents and our treasures. Making this a
success for everyone is the best reason we know for
saving this date.
Rosary and the Gospel – People in Prayer
The Rosary and the Gospels go hand in hand for our
prayer life. Enrich your Lenten devotions by joining us in
the Parish Hall throughout the season as we first pray the
rosary and then reflect on and discuss the Gospel reading
for the upcoming Sunday. It will be a time of refreshment
in preparation for Sunday Mass during Lent. Plan on
about one hour and 15 minutes. See the Tuesday and
Saturday schedule below and post it at home or on your
calendar!
We’ve set up for two different days. For more
information, contact Cheryl Wills 816.945.7819 or
Valorie Fenton-Wells.
Here are the dates and times:
Saturday March 7, 10am; Tuesday March 10, 6:30pm;
Saturday March 21, 10am; Tuesday March 24, 6:30pm;
Saturday April 4, 10am; Tuesday April 7, 6:30pm
Lent 2020
One of Lenten activities we have done for the past two
years is to use paper crosses on tree branches at the front
of the church to write down our prayers and needs for
Lent. As our tree branches take on more crosses, our
Lenten tree witnesses our journey as we travel towards
Easter. This year we ask you to again take a cross as
you come into church, write a grace you need or desire
for the coming week as you Live Your Lent to pray for
each other, trustinand hang the cross on the tree. This is
an opportunity for us g that God will give us what we
need to grow this Lenten Season. We will begin this on
the first weekend of Lent, February 29/March 1.
Help Needed
Guardian Angels Church has had an Easter Egg Hunt
on Palm Sunday for a number of
years. This was held after the
11:00 am mass and took place in
our Grotto, west of the church.
This year, we are in need of
individual(s) to head this endeavor.
If you can manage this event,
please contact Linda Parkinson, our
volunteer coordinator at
[email protected] or call Kate in
the Parish office at (816) 931-4351. The coordinator is
not responsible for supplying the candy and eggs that
are used in the Hunt.
Harvester’s
Guardian Angels Church parishioners will be going to
Harvester’s to assist in food sorting on Saturday,
March 28. We are scheduled to be there from 10 am
till 12 noon. We will meet in the south parking lot
(near the parish office) no later than 9:15 am and we
will carpool to Harvester’s. Children as young as eight
years old may volunteer with parental supervision (one
parent per one child).
Beloved,
Jesus follows the petition, “Thy Kingdom come” with a
similar petition, “Thy will be done.” An interesting note
on the Greek syntax of these two expressions in the Our
Father is that they are both in the imperative. They would
be more literally translated, “Come, your kingdom. Be
done, your will.” This is a very strong expression, both of
submission, and of fervency. It is a call for God to bring
about his absolute perfect will in our lives. And not only in
our lives, but in the entire earth.
A man who had been lame since birth was listening to
St. Paul preach. Paul looked intently at the man and “saw
that he had faith to be healed.” Paul did not call a prayer
meeting, he simply commanded into existence what he saw
in a spiritual reality. “Stand up on your feet.” Paul
demanded. Immediately, the man jumped up and started to
walk for the first time in his life. (Acts 14:8-10)
The early John Wayne western movies were classic. I
often reminisce about them. When all seems lost, the
cavalry arrives to save the day. I believe that the reason
these two phrases in the Our Father are in the imperative is
that we are instructed by Jesus to, in effect, call in the
cavalry, who is God our Father, to save the day.
The oncoming truck broadsided the high school
cheerleader, crushing the left side of her body. She was
rushed to the hospital with dozens of broken bones. As the
doctors focused on setting her many fractures, they failed
to notice her brain was swelling. I saw the prayer request
on Facebook. When I got to the hospital she was in a coma.
There was little hope for a normal life following the
accident. Everyone I talked to said it would take a miracle
to prevent severe brain damage. I sat beside her and held
her right hand. Words did not come to my prayers. I simply
breathed deeply and imagined Jesus holding her hand. I sat
there like that for almost half an hour, until I somehow
knew Jesus had touched her. Within the week, she was
laughing with friends. Later that year, she enjoyed prom
and graduated from high school.
The question comes to us, though: do we really want
God’s will for our lives? Too often our prayers are filled
with petitions declaring our will. But Jesus teaches us to
come to God declaring his will. It is the essence of our
fallen nature to be fearful of surrendering our will to God.
Immediately after the first sin, Adam ran and hid from
God. Our imagination kicks into overdrive and we conjure
up fearful scenarios that drive us away from total surrender
to the will of God. But this is all unnecessary. We need to
understand who God is. We need to be confident of his
unconditional love for us. God only desires what is the
absolute best for us. The fact is that we will never be truly
happy until we surrender.
Yours in Christ,
Father Ed

A Special Note from Father Ed
I am in the process of evaluating our Parish communications. My good friend Dave Laney, with Diocesan Publications, has approached me.
Diocesan is a 60+ year old Catholic-owned company dedicated to serving the communications needs of the Catholic Church. Dave has served Cheryl Wills, when she was at St. Bernadette, and me at other parish assignments, in upgrading those communication efforts. The change was only for the better for all parishes. Now I need to measure the temperature
of acceptance in sponsoring a similar development here.
Diocesan Publications, should I decide positively based on parish response, would take the financial burden completely away from Guardian Angels and Our Lady of Hope. Diocesan will provide a cost-free, beautiful weekly bulletin.
One of the benefits of sponsorship is to network parishioner-owned businesses with our faith community. These are trusted people who are often seated next to us each Sunday. You may or may not be a business
owner yourself, but do know of a business that would high ly benefit by advertising in our faith community.
Maybe being a lector, usher or Eucharistic min ister is not comfortable for you. But, as a business owner, you would like to contribute to a critical ministry that welcomes all with our week ly bullet in that keeps people informed of who we are and what we offer.
If you are interested in helping support Guardian Angels and Our Lady of Hope by marketing your business, o r sharing about a business who could
benefit by the same, to help business growth and that saves a tremendous amount of money for us, please contact Cheryl Wills at 816.945.7819 or [email protected]
