POPPY APPEAL 2020 The poppy is a symbol of Remembrance and hope, including hope for a positive future and peaceful world.
The red poppy's origin as a popular symbol of remembrance stems from the Battlefields of the First World War. Previous beautiful landscapes were turned to mud, where nothing could grow. However, there was an exception; thousands and thousands of bright red Flanders Poppies grew in the middle of chaos and destruction and to this day the red poppy has become an enduring symbol of Remembrance.
The very first Poppy Appeal took place in 1921 when The (Royal) British Legion sold 9 million poppies – 99 years’ ago.
Shortly after losing a friend in Ypres in 1915, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write his now famous poem: which inspired the use of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance.
In Flanders Fields In Flanders' fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders' fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders' Fields.
Like so many things this year, the Poppy Appeal has had to adapt to the threat of Covid-19. We're calling on your support like never before,
because every poppy counts. Please give generously
Poppies are on sale at the Garage and Ratcliffe’s in Llanwrtyd, also in Llangammarch P.O. and Beulah Shop.
Llanwrtyd Wells Community Transport Minibus services are operated under Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act.
Unfortunately our shoppa bus service is suspended due to Covid-19, however we are still able to provide collection and delivery of prescriptions, shopping and pre-ordered take away food, all courtesy of our wonderful Volunteer Drivers using their own vehicles. Please contact one of our Shopping Coordinators for more information or to request the service, John McMahon: 07956 091242 or Rosemary Squires: 01591 610336
We have also received a grant to start up a Shopping Bus Service, which will mean that you can phone or email your order to us, we will collect several people’s orders from Tesco, Aldi, the Co-op or local shops and deliver them to your door. This will enable us to do several people’s shop at the same time. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact us and we will send out an application form.
We can also still take people to medical appointments, either locally or further afield like Hereford, Cardiff and other places, (don’t forget that we do have a wheelchair friendly vehicle for if you’re unable to get into a car). We can still provide SELECTED JOURNEYS FREE OF CHARGE too at the moment due to generous donations from, Friends of Healthcare in Builth & District, Community Connectors, Prince’s Trust, C-SERT, National Lottery
Community Fund and Social Value Development – Moving Forward Fund. For more information or to book an appointment, please call Laura Burns, General Manager on 01982 552727.
Unfortunately we have had to suspend until further notice the Heart of Wales Coffee Club held at Llanwrtyd Community Centre on Station Road due to the Covid-19 virus. We know this is a disappointment to our members, however we hope you understand this is for the safety of yourself and our volunteers. Just to confirm that we are NOT closed, merely on hold due to government restrictions, neither are we relocating to Zion Chapel. Any coffee club held there is independent of LWCT.
We are always looking for volunteers, especially drivers for our mini buses and to use their own cars for our Community Car Service Scheme. If you are at all interested and would like more information or to apply, please contact Laura Burns on 01982 552727 or at [email protected]
All necessary PPE will be provided for all our volunteers financed by the company, and we now have a fogging machine which is used weekly on all vehicles to sanitise them and make them safer for driver and passengers.

Llanwrtyd Wells & District Twinning Association
Good news received from Mériel! Jerome, the Mayor of Mériel, recently telephoned Bryn to say that the future of the Jumelage (Twinning) is very much in his plans, but at the moment everything is on hold because of Covid-19. Jerome assured Bryn that, once a semblance of normality is restored, he will contact the inhabitants of Mériel with the aim of forming a new Comité de Jumelage. He also has plans for another visit by children from Mériel to Manor Adventure once travel restrictions are lifted and Manor re-opens.
Thanks to Jenny and congratulations to Roshan! At the AGM of the Twinning Association in March, a new treasurer was elected to replace Jenny Curtis, who, after many years in the post, wished to retire. Jenny kindly carried on as treasurer until all the paper-work from the bank had been completed, which took far longer than expected because of the pandemic. The paper-work has now been completed and Roshan Chataway can officially take over the position. The secretary, Liz, would like to say a big thank-you to Jenny on behalf of the Twinning Association for all the hard work she has put in over the years as Treasurer, also thanks and congratulations to Roshan for becoming the new TA treasurer!
For more information about the Twinning Association, contact Liz Morris, email: [email protected] or Bryn Davies, telephone: 01591 610633.
FRIENDS OF YSGOL DÔLAFON
NEEDS YOU – Let’s hope COVID
doesn’t get in the way this time!
As a result of all our playground equipment being condemned and
now removed, we desperately need to revamp this area,
incorporating a memorial to the Raine children. However, we
don’t have all the
skills to do this ourselves, so we’re calling upon the expertise and
support of the community to help!! So, if you’re a builder,
carpenter, keen DIY’er or just generally happy to get your hands
dirty and happy to offer some time & maybe equipment then
please come along to listen to our plans and find out if you can
help at 9.30am on Saturday 14th November at school – there will
be a cuppa & biscuits waiting!
Additionally, as part of the memorial we would like to have an
outdoor gazebo and will be looking for people to tender to build
and install one. Further details will be available on the 14th.
If you are unable to attend on the 14th November but would like
to help, tender or have any ideas, please let Kate know either by
phoning the school on 01591 610326 or email:
We are so fortunate to have such a caring community, and we
know together we can create a memorial and play area the
children of Ysgol Dôlafon deserve! Thank you x

Stay Safe and Carry On (When not locked down)!
We would like to say thank you again to everyone for their continued support during these difficult times.
Our October meal deal has proven popular so we will be continuing it throughout November, assuming we are allowed to re-open on the 9th.
We will continue to do what we can to keep the community going in these strangest of times, and hope to see as many of you as we can within the (ever-changing) restrictions.

A Message from our Mayor Lynda Pace-Avery
It is difficult to know what to write this month, we are a third of the way through the fire break; the Hallowe’en trick or treat and firework parties have been cancelled. The First Minister has imposed a travel ban to prevent Covid-19 spreading from east to west. However, I am hopeful that if we abide by the rules now, perhaps we will be able to celebrate Christmas with family.
I know I sound like a broken record when I say I am so proud of the residents of Llanwrtyd Wells. I am continually astounded by your enthusiasm and generosity. Enthusiasm for what happens in town and generosity of time and giving.
The Dolwen: Recreation for All committee received over 50 entries for the Design a Sensory Garden competition, and 121 votes were cast. I especially want to thank the staff and pupils of Ysgol Dôlafon for their contributions. The winner of the adult section was Lauren Price, the winner of the junior section was Mya Brown. Look out for the Dolwen Christmas Raffle. The first prize will be a Christmas hamper, other prizes will be toiletries and an afternoon tea selection.
The Town Council have agreed to name the road and car park the Lambkin-Parkinson Way. Some residents asked if Pat Lambkin, Councillor, Dept. Mayor, could be remembered at Dolwen for her work with Man vs Horse. June Parkinson, Councillor, Town Mayor, worked hard to gain funding for the Pavilion and getting Dolwen adopted by fields in trust.
The Christmas Shoebox for Helping the Homeless Wales appeal has been launched and once again people have demonstrated their generosity. Within days of the appeal being launched people have been bringing their donations to my house, we are well on the way to exceeding the number of donations we gave last year. Thank you. I will be delivering the Llanwrtyd Wells donations to HOHW on 1st December.
Another form of generosity from the people of Llanwrtyd were those who submitted photographs for the Naked Truth calendar in support of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation. The models included B&B owners, café owners, myself, with ages between 23-79 years old, who shared fun images from their self-isolation in the summer. The result is the Calendar Girls inspired calendar. Copies can be obtained from the Neuadd Arms, Caffi Sospan or Berni Benton for £10, all profits going to BDDF.
I am pleased to announce that Llanwrtyd Wells Town Council has co-opted two councillors; Peter Tonks has re-joined the council after a three-year absence, and Roshan Chattaway.
It is also gratifying to know that some of the town highlights around this time of the year will still be going ahead, albeit in some altered form.
We will be holding a socially distance wreath laying ceremony on Remembrance Day, Wednesday 11th November 2020 at 10.45-11.00am, at the War Memorial.
The Christmas tree festival will still be going ahead, with the trees being put up in the church grounds. This year’s theme is HOPE
The Festival Committee are planning for the Christmas tree and lights to go up as usual. I thank everyone involved in this task, from completing the applications for permits; the donation of the tree and the fire crew/committee members who actually erect the tree and lights. Town always looks extra special during the Christmas period.
I would like to thank each and every one of you for playing the part to keep our town safe, Thank you Diolch yn fawr.

Due to the present Covid 19 restrictions currently in place we are unable to hold the Tree Festival during Advent this year in St James Church. However, we would like to invite those who have taken part in previous years, and anyone else who would like to join in, to decorate a tree using ‘Hope’ as the theme and place it in the church grounds within the railings.

The National Garden Scheme is delighted to announce that President, Mary Berry, was made a Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Mary opened her garden for over 20 years, becoming President in 2016. Despite the challenges that September brought in terms of restrictions to socialising, the first ever Great British Garden Party raised almost £40,000 for the Help Support Our Nurses appeal. Thank you to all who supported this new event which is set to become a regular part of our garden year.
