SPECIAL Sport, Sport, Sport! PHOTO CONTEST Winner Announcement

This issue was meant to be distributed already several weeks ago. However, in consideration of the piracy at-

tack against our MV POMERENIA SKY, managed by Mid-ocean (IOM) Limited, we thought that this issue with its ka-leidoscope of news in our world had to wait until our eleven colleagues were released.

MV POMERENIA SKY was attacked on 27th October, 57 nm off the port of Onne, with a naval vessel waiting at the rendezvous point 40 nm from Onne. When writing these lines I just received the relieving news that all eleven of our colleagues were released. Only one year ago I stated at this opportunity when writing about the welcome of our six col-leagues from MV DEMETER after nineteen days in captivity in Nigeria that we will do our utmost to prevent similar situ-ation to happen. Unfortunately this horrible crime happened again.

Due to the long duration of the captivity the family members had weeks of fear and anguish which our colleagues in Ma-nila, Poland and Ukraine tried to settle. I take the opportuni-ty to thank all of our colleagues in Manila, Poland, Ukraine, Hamburg and on the Isle of Man for all their efforts.

I also like to thank all of you who resisted communicating about this terrible incident in the social media as this provid-ed us to keep our strength in the negotiations.

We will do all and everything and intensify our training on board of the vessels calling Nigeria to sharpen the awareness.

In our new PD-Homeport you will find an interesting in-terview with Marc Weller, a former apprentice in Hamburg, who decided to study and go on board of ships to reach the position of a captain, and is now as nautical superintendent back in our office in Hamburg. Family live is something which really matters.

Michael Dittmer, also a former apprentice/trainee, who stayed on board in Hamburg, tells the story “Behind the flag”. Apprenticeship and training ashore and on board are and re-main one of our main topics.

Last but not least, you find some interesting articles about the sports here 2018 and the prevention course.

To round things up: if you have a story you like to tell please get in touch with the PD Homeport team to I like express my thankfulness for keeping in touch.

Wishing you all a safe journey, an interesting reading and may God bless you all.

A Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Dear Colleagues on board and in the offices,

Dr. Gaby Bornheim

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD IN HAMBURG

MESSAGE FROM THE CREWING

HEADQUARTER | EDITORIAL

Dear Colleagues,

Walking around the 2018 SMM in Hamburg – the lead-ing international maritime trade fair – being encoun-

tered with a demonstration of industry trends, innovations and promising start-ups – one thing seems conspicuous: significant change is coming to the world of seafaring and logistics.

Whatever we care to call it: digitalization, digital transforma-tion, industry 4.0, IoT (Internet of Things) – the question is not if, but how and when this is going to happen and to which extend it will change our maritime working environment both ashore and at sea. Combined with another mega-trend in shipping which is “CSR” (Corporate Social Responsibility) we are moving away from a pure compliance (overruled?) approach when operating a ship towards highest level of transparency and innovation, Big Data, green thinking, at least semi autonomy, data security, resources management and others …

There is no need to be a forward thinker when profiling the future seafarer. It will come with the so called Generation Z (born 1995 – 2010) who grow up and will work with deci-sion support technologies, real time analytic tools and others which of course will require a different skill set and probably different competencies. However, if this eventually means substantial less crew on board of continuous growing ships engaged in worldwide trading patterns will probably be a hot topic of science round tables and debates.

Let me open this homeport issue with a quote of Henry Ford “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

Enjoy the reading.

+++ Once again we had the pleasure to welcome two more newbuildings to our worldwide trading bulk fleet. Our new 38,800 dwt bulk carrier M/V RUBINA was christened by our colleague Mrs. Susanne Barrot and thereafter delivered on May 17th, 2018 by Jiangsu Hantong Heavy Shipbuilding.

Furthermore, Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG took deliv-ery of the same size newbuilding M/V RABEA on July 11th, 2018 and herewith completes our Green Dolphin Design newbuilding series. +++

+++ “Commercially on the move” – that has been a concept which has been always utilized within the Döhle Group. This metaphor was put in place when our colleagues from container, bulk and multi-purpose chartering, operations and sale & purchase depart-ment moved 1.5 km down the road in the beautifully restored building called “Tamm Villa”.+++

+++ The new Handysize bulk carrier pool venture “Han-seatic Unity Handysize Pool – HUHP” was launched on July 01st, 2018. Thus, Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG and Reederei NORD GmbH joined forces and operate a mu-tual pool venture from Hamburg and Singapore, each location focusing on the respective basin.

Initially, Peter Döhle will bring seven Green Dolphins into the pool with another eleven Emerald Mark I, Mark II and Green Dolphin types from Reederei Nord. HUHP will provide exclusive pool services for the Handysize vessels of their founding partners and other third party customers. +++

+++ Beginning of June the publicly listed Ernst Russ AG and its affiliated companies moved into our head-quarters at Elbchaussee 370. This step allows not only considerable savings in rental charges, but also creates more efficient workflows and collaboration between various departments. +++

+++ Döhle Seafront would like to thank all 215 seafar-ers and wives who braved the dark skies on September 14 to attend our “Listen to Your Body” Health Seminar by Didoy Lubaton M.D. We hope to see you again and always stay healthy so you can take care of others as well. +++

Luckily I got the chance to join one of our vessels for two weeks which was a great experience and convinced me that life on board might also be interesting for me. Finally, ev-erything went very fast. Before my apprenticeship ended I applied for a job as cadet and got the chance to join a ves-sel sailing from Asia to South America and later on to Eu-rope. At that time it sounded for me like a big adventure and something special, not everybody is doing. Perfect for a young guy who is still searching for his way in life and doesn´t know where to put all his energy. One week, af-ter I got my shipbroker certificate I started with the needed courses and joined a container vessel for the first time.

What has been the b iggest ad jus tment?

I think it is difficult to say which changes are the biggest. It is a combination of many things which makes life on board so different to life ashore. For example you might be on very remote places without internet access and very limited possibilities to reach your family and friends. Ad-ditionally you cannot escape from any situation or per-son on board. That means to work in a team has an even higher importance than ashore. You are depending on the other crew members, alone you will not be able to sail the vessel. And generally a merchant vessel is not a pleasure craft. It is a place of work, possibilities and time to relax are very limited. Furthermore, there is almost no week-end. When you join a vessel, you know that you will have to work every day until the day when you sign off.

In which s i tuat ion on board you fe l t the advantage hav ing f in i shed a l ready the apprent icesh ip in commerc ia l sh ipp ing?

There were many situations I remember where it was very helpful to know at least roughly what our “office crew” is doing every day and how the procedures in case of specific events are. Already when I was Cadet many Captains were asking me what will happen in the office when writing specific requests or information. Later as C/O and espe-cially as Captain it was even more helpful as you are more often in direct contact with the office and charterers. In these positions not only the knowledge about procedures but also to know the people with whom you are writing or talking is helpful and important.

Why haven’t you stayed on board but went ashore again?

First of all, I would like to mention that I did not leave the sea because I don´t like it any more. I was studying and sailing many years to reach the position of a Captain. That was my dream and I still like the work on board like I did from the start. But beginning of this year my wife gave birth to our son and we decided that this might be the time for changes. In Germany it is nowadays quite common that both partners are working. Life in the big cities like Ham-burg is expensive, and the comparably high taxes and other expenses are taking quite a big percentage of the salaries. Therefore, also my wife likes to start working again and that is very difficult when I would stay at sea for about eight month per year. Additionally, and that was the main reason, I want to have more time with my little son and want to see him growing up. Luckily there was a vacant position in the office as nautical superintendent. The job description sounded very interesting and it is a good possibility to bring some experiences from board to the office and also to learn new things and continue to develop.

You got to know many facets in sh ipp ing. Would l i ke to make a recommendat ion for our young co l leagues?

Shipping business offers a lot of different jobs directly or indirectly related to the management of vessels. Just by looking at our company and all the different departments there are so many possibilities and chances. Additionally, taking all the suppliers and service partners in consider-ation I believe there is a matching job for most of you. To find the best job for yourself right after school is very dif-ficult. It is more a development over several years until you find out what is best for you. I can recommend to go on board at least for a few weeks to see what it means to be live on scene. But one thing is always important to keep in mind, whatever is your decision. We all have to work to earn money and pay our dues. But once you start working for the money only, you will not be happy and probably you will not be successful. The job you choose must be fun and you need to like it generally. When this is the basis of your decision then you will find the best place and job for you.

How d id you come up wi th th i s dec i s ion?

My family was never working in shipping business. When I started my apprenticeship with PD in the year 2007 it was something completely new and unknown to me. During the two and a half years I worked in the office I got the chance to join almost every department in our office in Hamburg and got a good overview of the jobs and procedures to be done. Anyhow for me it was a little bit abstract and hard to imagine what actually happens on board, how jobs have to be carried out and why decisions on board were taken in a specific way.

You finished your apprenticeship in commercial shipping

at Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG and decided to go to sea.

On 25.08.2018 at 17:55, a distress call from a downed aircraft was received on board our good container

vessel MV „POLAR PERU“. Once positions were checked on the sea charts, Captain Kowalski directly altered the course of his vessel towards the scene of accident – Lat: 31°12.1’N Long: 069°59.1W, about 450 nautical miles away from the US Coast.

Whilst the vessel was steaming for about two and a half hours and with 18.8 knots max speed towards the downed aircraft, Captain Kowalski arranged an on scene rescue plan together with his C/O Carutasu and briefed his entire crew, setting-up the crews’ tasks and preparations. Fortu-nately, the aircrafts radio equipment was still functional, enabling Captain Kowalski to explain his rescue plans to Captain John Hollyer and his four crew members, who were remaining on board the slowly sinking HU-16 Alba-tross sea plane, awaiting their evacuation.

Due to the exemplary seamanship, humanity and altruism of Captain Kowalski and his crew, Captain Hollyer and his four aviators have been recovered uninjured by ves-sels rescue boat, and finally safely embarked on board MV “POLAR PERU”.

On behalf of the entire team of the Peter-Döhle Schif-fahrts-KG, we would now once again like to express our sincerest thanks to Captain Kowalski and his crew, who made such an important contribute to help others in acute emergency situations, representing our good company and its essential principles.

RESCUE BY POLAR PERU

THE MAN BEHIND THE FLAG

Adriana Eder had the idea to welcome the in and out- going vessels in Hamburg from the new location at the

Elbchaussee 370. A very good idea!

Ulrich Rehme (a Superintendent in Retirement) brought a broomstick on which he mounted the PD-flag.

From that date, in all kinds of weathers, every Döhle and Hammonia vessels during the office hours got their person-al Döhle welcome and/or bon voyage.

Adriana or I waved the flag and generate by this a bond of connectedness with our colleagues on the vessels. Not seldomly the captain reverted and thanked for the warm greetings.

Since the inspection department moved from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor of our office building the task to waive the flag got more difficult. As the distance to the new wave point on top of the building is much longer, it is necessary to check well in advance the weekly schedule for Hamburg.

Since February 2001 I’m with PD and started my second apprenticeship for 2,5 years followed by 10 years working in the inspection departement. After having started as as-sistant (office management), I became more and more re-sponsible in ship-IT related communication.

Since June 2014 I’m working as technical purchaser in “Team 3” together with Arne Birckmann and Ann-Christin Bernt. We support the ships of our team with all necessary goods.

The story began when we moved from Palmaille to the Elbchaussee 370 …

Since May 2006 I‘m with the company and remember that the event „get-together apprentices shore & ship“

has always been considered as something special. The ap-prentices from the shore and sea-side were always happy to be a part of it. From the crewing side we have always been invited for drink in the evening and it was always nice exchanging with them in a quiet minute.

In 2008, I took over new responsibilities, focusing on training and education activities for the whole fleet and in line with this I‘m in charge for the organization of this nice event. The organization is always done in cooperation be-tween the HR department and the DCA.

At the beginning the day has been created by numerous presentations from different departments and as well from the apprentices themselves.

Generally, we invite apprentices from the following oc-cupational field: Ship Mechanic Apprentices, Technical Officer Assistants, Nautical Officer Assistants, Shipping Clerks, Insurance Clerks, IT Clerks and Office Clerks.

In the meanwhile, the organizational part has been changed. It’s always a surprise what the content of the event will be. The apprentices are informed about the rough topic in advance, only. This always creates anticipa-tion and excitement. The focus has been changed to team-work, cooperation and efficiency.

In the last years we had parts like: Impro-theater, emer-gency response with media awareness and parts in the style of some shows like „Beat the other apprentices“ or „Who wants to be millionaire?“. The realization for this year, of course, is still a secret. You cannot imagine the ongoing speculations in advance.

Another change is that the event takes always place in the week of our in-house trainings: Cargo Loss and Pre-vention (CLP) and Maintenance and Damage Prevention (MDP). Office apprentices from Ernst Russ Shipbroker and Menzell Döhle are invited, too.

On Friday evening all Officers, Engineers, Apprentices and in-house colleagues are sitting together and having a nice and enjoyable evening. Most of the apprentices using the chance for a location change afterwards. Often it isn‘t relevant from which companies the apprentices are and if they are from shore or sea-side.

I guess especially for the apprentices from board it is a good experience and nice feeling being close with the head office.

For me it’s always a pleasure to realize such an event also for saying thank you for their daily support.

During the last weekend in August the 36th Schif-fahrtsregatta took place. About 113 yachts of various

types and sizes with round about 1000 participants were competing and sailing between Schleimünde in Germany and Ærösköbing in Denmark. The 12-strong crew from Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG traditionally participated on the Swan 51 ‘VERANO’. A wonderful old boat built in 1985. Off we went early in the morning on Saturday but 15 minutes before our starting signal the shackle of the jib halyard broke and we had to send Stephan with the bo-sun’s chair to the top of the mast. That entire action put us in an unlucky starting position, resulting in an early start and receiving an individual recall as penalty. Thus, we had to return as the only ship in this start and cross the line again. We could see that some of our competitors had set up spinnaker and were already far ahead of us. But instead

of being frustrated we put all our energy to catch-up with one opponent after the other. And we did! With south westerly winds of about 4 Beaufort Eggat was grinding the winch until he had blisters on his hands and helms-man Thorsten was steering the yacht calm and profession-al through all tricky situations. Highly concentrated and highly motivated until the end, we had lots of fun when we crossed the finishing line. When called on stage later at the prize giving ceremony to pick up the first price in our group as well as the prize for ‘first ship home’ in our group, you could see 12 happy faces and all pain was forgotten.

Meanwhile on 01st June 2018 the PD-Cup was held for the eleventh time on the playground of Altona 93. On a summerlike day, 12 teams were invited to compete against each other firstly in two groups of 6 teams each. Due to a cancellation on short notice the number of teams was unfortunately reduced to 11.

After an exiting preliminary round, the teams of HMS and Hammonia Reederei, both of group A and Oldendorff and Ernst Russ Shipbroker, both of group B qualified for the semifinal. The PD-Skippers, suffering from a lack of a few starters, presented themselves as good hosts – the offensive play was indeed full of good but missed chances, whereby the defensive play was peppered with generous presents for the opponents. It finally lead the PD-Skippers to one win, one draw and, in some extent, three unneces-sary batterings and ended in a sligthly disappointig sev-enth position in the overall standing.

The team of HMS won against Ernst Russ Shipbroker scoring 2-0, while Oldendorff Carrieres scored 1-0 against Hammonia Reederei. During the match for the 3rd place, the team of Ernst Russ Shipbroker got the upper hand over Hammonia Reederei and scored 3-1. It was quite surpris-ing that HMS, who had twice become the title holder, lost

PD SOCCER CUP 2018

PD SOCCER CUP 2018 against Oldendorff Carriers with a final score of 0-2. So Oldendorff won the famous chal-lenge cup for the first time.

The day ended with a couple of well deserved cold drinks, a nice barbeque and good talks. All of us were happy that apart from little sunburns nobody was injured and all of us had great fun! Looking forward to the next cup in 2019.

At Saturday the 18th of August 2018 already the 18th Shipping Volleyball-Cup took place in Leer, a small

shipping focused city in the North-West of Germany. It was the first time that the team of ten ambitious volley-ball players and backers of the Döhle Assekuranzkontor (“DAK”) alias “Elbe-Sharks” visited the event and finally won with a lot of team spirit the third place.

This year’s tournament was organized by the last winner ship chandler Kloska GmbH. 18 teams from the North-West region like previous winner Kloska, the maritime competence centre Mariko and several teams of the ship-ping company BBC Chartering, as wells as other repre-sentatives from the shipping industry participated at the sports event and corporate meeting.

Until the late Saturday afternoon, the teams were compet-ing for the win. Even with a lot of fun and a team play which they improved in each match, the team of DAK had to throw in the towel in the half final against this year’s winner BBC Chartering. Nevertheless, they can be really proud of themselves achieving the third place with only a few hours of training.

DAK was supported by various colleagues from Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG as well as some trainees. The teamof DAK was represented by Yik Yan, Johann von Rantzauand Janina Bentien.

DAK Placing Manager Yik Yan was initiating the atten-dance together with Mykola Kazadayev who had already participated in the past at this regional event with his previous colleagues from BBC Chartering. He performed very well his self-given job as the “Elbe-Shark”-mascot. In his costume was attracting everyone’s attention. This might be why the team from Hamburg was all in all even more favored and will stay everyone in mind! In the end the team well deserved it to toast their third place and was looking back on a day of both athletic success and lots of fun and team spirit.

MERCMARINE PREMIER LEAGUE MPL 2018

The cricket tournament called “Mercmarine Premier League”, or this year “MPL 2018” was held the ninth

consecutive time at the Malay Grounds in Colombo, Sri Lan-ka March 18th, 2018.

More than 500 seafarers participated in this event which fostered the fellowship among the seafaring fraternity in Sri Lanka. As the seafaring community is scattered all over the country, this cricket tournament is a great opportunity to bring them all together.

20 teams consisting of mainly seafarers and key colleagues of Mercmarine enrolled for this year’s MPL 2018 and the squads were divided into two groups entering the knock-out round. The teams competed closely for the coveted trophy and played with great enthusiasm.

Already the first match was between the Döhle team and the Mercantile Marine Management players. PD team batted first and scored 34 runs in their allocated 4 overs setting up a winning target of 35 runs. Unfortunately, PD ballers were unable to restrict MMM scoring the winning run. Thus, MMM won the match in the 3rd over.

Further outstanding teams were the ones of Bertling and MSTI Alumni in Group A respectively Lanka Academy and Ceyline. From the semi-finals of both groups MSTI Alumni

emerged victoriously and team Ceyline managed a slot in the final after a nail-biting game against the strong Lanka Academy who claimed six MPL titles in the past.

In the finals MSTI Alumni batted first after winning the toss. They briskly scored 49 from their allocated quota of 16 deliv-eries and right-handed batsman Keshara top scored with 41 runs and reached the highest individual score of the tourna-ment. Team Ceyline, who batted second kept losing wickets regularly limiting them to 44 runs. For the first time in the nine-year history of the tournament MSTI Alumni emerged as the champions and Ceyline, participating for the first time this year, became runner-up.

Congratulation!

SPECIAL | MERCMARINE CRICKET CARNIVAL

A rather unusual hunt was taking place on the M/V Merkur Horizon, being a commercially managed

vessel by our J/V chartering outfit Blue Net Chartering GmbH.

As it was reported from local newspapers, a troop of mon-keys delayed the departure of the a.m. vessel from Chen-nai port. Wildlife officials were informed that about two monkeys secretly embarked the 4,431 TEU containership and were hiding somewhere on board. The ranger’s team leader said: “Our team spent a day searching the entire vessel, but the monkey could not be traced.”

Thus, it was decided to leave Chennai port and sail to the intended destination Singapore. However, shortly after departure and passing Ennore port crewmembers spotted one of the monkeys on board and wildlife rangers tried a second time to discover the clever animals – again without any luck …

But the hunt was still ongoing… After departure the crew set a trap, more specifically an empty container with water and fruits. Nevertheless, the monkeys proved their speed and cleverness. They stole the fruits out of the contain-er before the door could be closed by the crew and they climbed on top of a container bay to enjoy their fresh meal. Since then the monkeys behaved even more cau-tiously and whenever one of them was spotted by the crew, it immediately ran away and hid between some containers of the higher tiers.

After a while though, no more sightings of the monkey appeared and neither water nor fruity baits were touched. Thus, it appears the two monkeys disembarked again and play their pranks somewhere else …

STORY | CATCH ME IF YOU CAN CATCH ME IF YOU CAN | STORY

Such unlikely incidents may occur on board and our crew should be able to react fast and to act consequent-

ly in order to minimize the risk to their fellows, to the ship and to the cargo.

But what is the best way to create awareness and caution amongst our seafarer in order to prevent such avoidable incidents on board? Ideally we confront them with real scenarios happened on our vessels and present the same in a seminar where we invite our seafarer to analyse the root cause and to find preventive measurements.

This is what we, several representatives from PDS-KG and HAMMONIA Reederei, tried to achieve in the so called “Shipboard Management Seminar (SBM)” held on 28th August 2018 in Constanta (Romania), which is one of the two seminars held each in Constanta and Gdynia per year.Who is a competent person to perform certain jobs or functions on board? For whom we render our services and who provides support in cases of emergency?

These are some of the questions, which we raised in this seminar and it was clearly emphasized to everybody that especially in the connection between the office and the vessel, we should consider us as partners. For us it is of utmost importance to have established clear and simple communication lines in order to ensure a fast and focused support. Simple activities like regular maintenance, visu-al inspections and frequent cleaning of the facilities on

board can avoid incidents at the first glance and will have a huge impact to the safety on board.

Routines should be known to everybody on board and fol-lowed especially in emergency situations but also in the daily operations. Incidents like the mentioned can be eas-ily avoided and it is surprising how negligence of simple matter of facts can create huge harm to crew, cargo and ship.

Therefore we feel, all participants of the SBM Seminar are thankful to the insights given to us and also to the staff of our “Döhle Manning Agency Romania” & “DCA Ham-burg” who worked hard to organize the seminar and to make it as successful as it was.

We encourage everyone to accept an invitation to one of the next SBM Seminars held in Gdynia or Constanta. Es-pecially the team in the office, who dedicate their time to render a high-quality and supportive service to our sea-farer and us, make it always very pleasant to us to pay a visit there.

ROMANIA | MANNING AGENCYMANNING AGENCY | ROMANIA

More than 50.000 industry visitors from 120 coun-tries came to the leading maritime trade fair in

Hamburg.

SMM 2018 placed special emphasis on the following key questions: How can today’s strict environmental regula-tions be met? How can the shipping industry cope with growing cost pressures? How can digitalization help im-prove operating efficiency? Which market segments offer growth potential?

It was obvious that digitalization or digital transformation is a component of many themes.

Döhle Group had a lively meeting point on the stand of Combitrade. Our colleagues Mrs. Iris Baguilat and Mr. Tore Henriksen came as well from Manila to present the organization and their services.

During 4 days various discussions were held, interesting topics discovered and business targeted.

In our last Homeport PD edition, PD launched once again a new PD Photo Contest open to all Döhle Group

employees, inviting them to capture their »united« pic-ture.

The response was tremendous with all its entries submit-ted by our seafarers and shore-based personnel around the world. We received once again loads of high quality pictures portraying crew on board, stunning sceneries, ports, vessels and unique impressions of your life with PD.

After a very difficult deliberation, we are now very pleased to announce the winners of the Photo Contest and like to thank all contributors for the great efforts, creativity and impressions provided. Even if criteria such as technical quality, motif or pictorial design could give some rough guidelines, with so many willing contestants the choice will never be easy..! But after some discussions and re-views the final winners were picked.

WE LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL SHOWING US YOUR CREATIVITY!
