FOOD PANTRY
We feel very fortunate at Guardian Angels to have a Food
Pantry to help with the needs of the hungry in the Westport/
Roanoke area. While we do utilize Harvesters for the
majority of our food supplies, we also depend on the
generosity of parishioners.
Current Needs in the Pantry: canned ravioli, canned
vegetables, soup, soap bars, body wash.
Third Sunday of Advent
Gaudete Sunday (gow-DEH-teh) is
the third Sunday of Advent in the
liturgical calendar. Gadete is Latin
meaning “rejoice.” Long ago the Pope
would honor a citizen with a pink rose.
Priests then would wear pink vestments
as a reminder of this coming joy. The
liturgy bids us be happy, not to worry,
for the Lord is near. And if we want the
peace of God in our hearts, that peace
will be ours, if we trustfully ask God for
it. St Paul says, “There is no need to worry; but if there is
anything you need, pray for it, asking God for it with prayer
and thanksgiving.” He tells us not to wait until after God has
granted our requests before saying thanks. Even as we ask,
we should be giving thanks. The Church reminds us through
the pink candle of Advent that there is an appointed time for
everything (Eccl. 3:1). The time now is for rejoicing–because
the Lord is coming soon!

Year-End Contributions Make a HUGE Difference
There’s no better time than the holidays to get into the spirit
of giving through an end-of-year tax deductible contribution
to Guardian Angels Parish. Not only could your donation
benefit a specific ministry (like the food pantry), but it can
provide you with valuable tax savings. This can be done to
honor a loved one during the Holiday Season (we will
gladly send an acknowledgement for each contribution
received). This is also the ideal time to make a bequest. To
make a bequest, you do NOT need to re-write your will; you
file a “codicil,” which is similar to writing an amendment to
your will. Guardian Angels Parish can also be a beneficiary
of your life insurance or retirement plan account.

Welcome as we gather this Sunday for
Gaudete Sunday (3rd Sunday of Advent)
on the church’s calendar. We have been
preparing for the arrival of the Lord –
not only his first coming but his second
coming as well. So now that we are
slightly over halfway - it is only
appropriate that we rejoice as our goal of
Christmas nears. This can even be seen
in our vestments that move from the
traditional violet to rose that we wear
today.
In today’s gospel we hear how the
people are confused about who John the
Baptist is; is he Elijah, the Christ or a
prophet, and It appears that only John
knows that his is not the one they have
been waiting on.
Today in our society when people are
worried about social status and worldly
possessions; it is refreshing for us to
hear this honest and humble message of
John the Baptist, who says: the one you
are waiting for is coming after me, and I
am unworthy to untie his sandal strap.
Today we get so tied up in our lives and
jobs that sometimes we lose perspective
of who we are and why we are here. We
are created for Gods glory not ours, to
serve him – not the other way around
and to love him and our brothers and
sisters; this is simple but difficult to do
at times.
It’s a message that is even more
necessary to hear during this time of the
year when people are out shopping for
friends and neighbors and lose sight of
what is important, like the less fortunate
in our community.
As we look forward to Christmas with
our families, it is a challenge to keep the
proper perspective and spirit when the
media machines keep cranking out
messages to spend, and then spend some
more because “you deserve it!”
Fortunately, the true spirit of the season
can be seen and is alive here at Guardian
Angels. It is exhibited in the
overwhelming response by our
parishioners to the Angel Tree, the
support of our Food Pantry, the coming
together to put on the Christmas concert
and decorating the church. All these

things call upon a person to think
not of themselves but of others, and
we are blessed to have so many
people here that do just that.
So, I am assured that although our
world appears to be in chaos at
times, here at G.A. we have learned
what’s meaningful. That it is more
than what someone wears or title
they carry; it is about what is inside
them, for we are all children of
Christ, and deserve to be treated
with dignity and respect, no matter
our state of life.
So, as we prepare to relive the 1st
coming and look forward to the
second coming as well, let us join in
praise with the shepherds and wise
men, and millions around the world
with the anticipated arrival of our
Lord and Savior.
Deacon Tyrone
