NEwTv AFTER SChOOL pROgRAm 2012–2013by Melinda Garfield,
Education Channel Coordinator
Last year NewTV introduced the NewTV After
School Program to get Newton elementary
and middle school students excited about
producing television, in the hope that they
will continue their education at the high
school level. The program is free for all
families and is held at each public school.
The feedback from parents has been positive
and the kids have been eager to participate.
Depending upon the month, we have been
offering each school a three- or four-session
program, during which students learn how
to use video cameras with proper shot
composition and produce public service
announcements and music videos. They
also get a chance to take part in our
“Campfire Stories” segment included in
NewTV’s original program The Folklorist. The
students shoot their videos on Canon VIXIA
HD camcorders, intern Noah Zucker edits
their projects together for broadcasting, and
each student receives a DVD of his or her
work at the end of the program.
So far this year, we have been to the Angier,
Bowen, Burr, Lincoln Eliot, Memorial
Spaulding, Peirce, Underwood and Ward
ORigiNAL pROgRAmmiNg UpdATEby Angela Harrer, Media Specialist
Back by popular demand this spring is the
second episode of NewTV’s original program,
The Folklorist, featuring host John Horrigan.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, the show
explores the historical events and stories that
make up the fabric of our cultural heritage.
We’re also currently in production on several
new episodes of the program, with the
entire first season of eight 30-minute shows
expected for a release this fall.
So how do we do it? For creating the look
and feel of the show, we use a basic studio
setup similar to a black box theater, and
shoot using one of our Sony NXCAMs
mounted on an eight-foot jib to give viewers
a more cinematic experience. We record
John’s footage and the reenactments in the
studio, and incorporate clips of archival and
field footage to help tell the story visually.
For any field footage, we shoot on a Canon
C300 using various prime and zoom lenses
to give it a nice depth of field that looks
similar to film. It’s incredible what can be
accomplished right here in the studio with
just a little creativity and a lot of dedication!
For more information, or to watch the
program, visit newtv.org/folklorist.

As a source of continued transparency, NewTV’s Government Channel was there to bring you the live and unedited meetings that have been part of the recent override election discussions. NewTV is the only source that provides gavel-to-gavel municipal meeting coverage available through both our channel and on demand via our website. We look forward to working with elected officials and city representatives to explain the challenges the community faces regarding aging infrastructure and balancing fiscal issues. NewTV will begin a collaboration with Sheriff Peter Koutoujian’s office to produce a monthly program that highlights many aspects and initiatives the sheriff is undertaking across the county. This partnership emphasizes NewTV’s commitment to developing programming at a municipal, county and state level.

This year at NewTV, keep an eye out for a number of great events we’re hosting for our members and the community. We’ll be kicking things off with a unique experience that will transport you to a simpler time in film: The Not-So-Silent Cinema featuring the New River Ensemble will be performing the soundtrack to classic Buster Keaton films including Cops and The Haunted House. The ensemble is made up of a keyboardist, clarinetist and cellist, and they’ll be playing live in the studio. Come in, get comfy and enjoy the films while grabbing some popcorn, candy and other refreshments. The event is free for NewTV members, students and seniors, and $5 for all non-NewTV members. If you can’t make this event, don’t worry; we’ll have plenty more on the way!
