“Most 1st year students are excited about their college experience. So that excitement enriches the classroom which makes conversations and discussions energized and energizing. This is contagious even for me as the instructor.

My advice for 1st year students is to think about school as a job. Students figuring out the ways that they learn is the 1st step in becoming a successful student. Start with simple things like keeping a calendar with major due dates; carving out a little time every day to study; making to-do lists and checking-off items when complete; and, always making notes when reading. Lastly, don’t be afraid to reach out to your professors in emails and office hours.

I can’t wait to meet you!”

Knowing Our Story

“Coming to the LEC has helped me a lot. In the beginning, I was at such a beginner’s level - like a Dr. Seuss level of writing- but now, I feel I could one day write a book! Now I know how to draw from research to bring in the evidence and description that my papers need.

Of the different brainstorming techniques, I like mind-mapping the most. Because when I put down my ideas in the map, there are many directions to go in - there are many ideas already on the table. I am a better writer because of the work I’ve done at the LEC.

To new students I say: Make the time to go to the LEC! You will get out what you put in - like anything in life. If you only come because your instructor sent you, it may not be the same experience. But if you come on your own, your experience will be very meaningful.”

Take some time to explore the amazing MCNY timeline on the 12th floor. You’ll be impressed to see how so many social movements shaped MCNY over our 50 year history!

Dr. Lynn Sally is the Director of the Bachelor of Arts in American Urban Studies Program.

Student Winner!

Library Spotlight

Congratulations to Amanda Pumarejo, winner of the FYE Scavenger Hunt!

Here’s what she has to say about being a new transfer student at MCNY:

“What I like about MCNY is the intimate setting. I feel I can really talk to my professors about class work, projects and my questions. I never had that at the previous schools I attended. I also really like how the Purposes are laid out. They really break down the individual goals for the semester. That help me focus on my projects.

And the FYE Scavenger Hunt was great! It gave me the chance to learn things about the school I hadn’t discovered - like the timeline, the Librarians, and even the view from the Student Lounge. It helped me break the ice in starting to talk withy the librarians and other staff.”

Amanda Pumarejo is a new transfer student in the Bachelor of Business

Program. She won the t-shirt during FYE Welcome Week!

Check out our monthly exhibits!

Critical Perspectives in Social Justice: Feminism This month’s exhibit explores multiple feminisms from the perspective of women of color, queer women, and grassroots coalitions. Explore the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th waves, and more, of feminist thought and activism.

Women & Leadership:

According to a recent New York Times survey of large companies, the number of male company directors just named “John” still outnumbers female directors overall! But that is slowly changing. In honor of Women’s History Month, we explore women in leadership, whether they’re at

the helm of governments, businesses, or social movements.

Meet Sandra Green, Library Associate for Public Services!

Sandra joined MCNY as a student in 1986 and went on to earn her

Bachelor’s in Professional Services and Masters of Public Administration.

She began her work at the Library in 1988, which means she’s now

worked there 27 years! Over the years she’s also worked in the fields of

Business and Human Services. In her own words:

“Working here I learn something new every day. I love the diversity at

MCNY and the chance to network with different departments.”

MCNY uses APA Style in all programs.

“APA Style” is a standard put forth by the American Psychological Association. It is an academic standard for

Formatting - how your paper looks on the page

Citation- how you give credit to your sources

Following the standard gives us greater credibility as members of a broad scholarly community and allows us to “join the conversation” through our scholarly work!
