ABOUT FAMILY SERVICES

Family Services of the Merrimack Valley is a private nonprofit social service orga-nization located in Lawrence, MA that builds individual self-reliance and strong families. Founded in 1854, the organization is deeply rooted in the Merrimack Valley region of Massachusetts and has established itself as a critical institution helping individuals and families build resilience to face life’s challenges.

The mission of the organization, to “empower, nurture and support children and families through life’s challenges to help them reach their full potential”, comes to life in the operation of 22 programs that improve the lives of nearly 7,000 individuals annually. This work is supported by a staff team of 85, a cadre of 336 volunteers, and a committed donor base of 870 individuals and organizations.

A Message From Our LeadershipFamily Services’ Fiscal Year ending 9/30/2020 was a very difficult one – not just for our organiza-tion, but for our country and the world. We watched as COVID-19 overwhelmed our community, the families we serve, and our own team of staff and volunteers. But, as with every crisis this or-ganization faces, we tapped into our resiliency, creativity, and compassion and met the moment with a renewed commitment to helping others. You’ll see from the highlights below that we managed to quickly adapt to an environment that required social distancing and still provided services to individuals and families that helped them navigate this difficult period. Of course we could not do this work without the commitment of so many. We are indebted to the donors, volunteers, and staff who gave time and treasure to support our mission during this difficult year. Thank you!

Youth Development programs help young people navigate the difficult stages of early adolescence and young adulthood, helping them uncover their strengths and skills to avoid risk behaviors and stay on track toward personal and academic success. In FY20, Family Services served over 1,270 young people (ages birth through 18) through nine youth development programs.

To fulfill its mission and help individuals over-come obstacles and reach their full potential, Family Services offers a broad array of programs in three core areas: Youth Develop-ment, Parent Education and Emotional Wellness. These services are implemented in 22 different programs reaching 6,792 individuals throughout Essex County.

Emotional Wellness programs help individuals of all ages build resilience so that they can face life’s challenges with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to stay healthy in trying times. In FY20, Fam-ily Services served 2,121 individuals in six emotional wellness programs.

Parent Education programs support parents and caregivers as they nur-ture and care for children of all ages, giving them the knowledge, skills and opportuni-ties to learn about healthy child develop-ment, household management, and tools for navigating challenging times. In FY20, Family Services served 3,401 parents and guard-ians in seven parent education programs.
