A highlight of Sacred Heart’s centennial year was the announcement of a new, fi ve-story, 120,000 square foot Children’s Hospital, along with a major expansion to women’s services. The expanded Children’s Hospital will allow Sacred Heart to provide care for more children, increase access to specialized pediatric and maternity care and consolidate pediatric services in one convenient location. “But even more than the number of patients we serve, we want to ensure the experience of those coming through our doors is as comfortable as possible and refl ects the high-quality care they are receiving. Our new Children’s Hospital will strive to provide

one consolidated healthcare home that is designed with a child’s needs in mind. This expansion also gives us the opportunity to build a maternity wing designed for a new generation of mothers and babies,” says Susan Davis, CEO of Sacred Heart Health System. Through the communities’ continued support, The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart is able to provide the region’s only pediatric trauma referral center, Level III NICU, and Perinatal Intensive Care Center, designed for women with high-risk pregnancies. We thank you for your past and continued support as we grow and expand our care throughout the region.

“Dr. Reed Bell believed we should build a place where children get the care they need, not the care their parents could a ord. I am so proud this is still our philosophy today.”

Nathaniel

Nathaniel was born in early February, one month before his due date. His mother, Megan Bowersox of Crestview, described the delivery as “very smooth.” However, the next day, a blockage caused Nathaniel’s small intestine to rupture, escalating his need for increased, specialized care. The immediate need for surgery provided Nathaniel with one of the first rides in Sacred Heart’s new Neonatal Critical Care Transport Unit. He was transported from Crestview to The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in

Pensacola, receiving specialized care along the way in what is basically a mobile Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). From the start, Nathaniel celebrated

many firsts within the Sacred Heart family—adding to his list of firsts by

being the first baby to move into the hospital’s newly expanded Level III NICU. This expansion provided an additional 12 private rooms, enabling more

critically ill and premature babies to receive specialized

care from Northwest Florida’s only children’s hospital.

Called to service, commi ed to caring—Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast (SHHEC) is undergoing a new transformation. Tuesday, September 1, 2015, as we celebrated 100 years of caring for our community, SHHEC and community leaders gathered to break ground on the $30-million expansion project in Miramar Beach. “Our journey is so much di§ erent today, from a building standpoint, but our mission remains the same—to provide high-quality, compassionate healthcare for all,” said Roger Hall, SHHEC President. With the hospital consistently operating at 70 percent occupancy, the expansion looks to increase capacity for maternity, emergency, inpatient and pediatric services. The Family Birth Place will be redesigned and expanded to provide a total of fi ve Labor

and Delivery rooms, 12 postpartum rooms, two antepartum rooms, four triage rooms and a larger nursery that will allow for a future

Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Emergency Department

expansion will include fi ve additional treatment rooms

and an eight-bed observation unit to provide care for patients staying less than 48 hours. The Inpatient expansion will include 12

new medical/surgical rooms. A portion of the emergency

and inpatient rooms will be made to be pediatric-friendly,

allowing for the future expansion of inpatient pediatric services. The expansion of SHHEC is a continuation of the mission of Sacred Heart Health System and our parent company, Ascension Health, to bring innovative, personalized healthcare to all persons, with special a ention to those who are the most vulnerable.

From diagnosis to healing, Sacred Heart Health System o§ ers compassionate care to heal patients inside and out throughout our region. Donna Bass of Andalusia was referred to Dr. Mark Boatright at the Sacred Heart Medical Oncology Group o« ce in Andalusia, Alabama. Over the course of her treatment, Donna developed a strong bond with both her doctor and nursing sta§ . “Dr. Boatright made the process a lot easier. He was very comforting.” On the road to healing from cancer, there’s a special destination—Camp Bluebird. Norma Sledge, a breast cancer survivor from Milton, returns to Camp Bluebird each year, not only because it’s a great experience, but

also because she enjoys giving hope to those who are just beginning their journey. “We all have that in common,” says Norma. “Anyone who has gone through cancer goes through the same mental type of experience—the same worries.” Norma has undergone six months of chemotherapy and 30 radiation treatments. Now in its 17th year, Camp Bluebird a racts approximately 40 cancer survivors from throughout the surrounding areas. Drew Barefield had 13 surgeries in 75 days. His doctors, nurses and family feared the worst. While fishing and snorkeling in Choctawhatchee Bay, 12-year-old Drew was struck by a boat. Transported by AIRHeart, Sacred Heart’s air ambulance, he was admied to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Pensacola. Drew’s injuries were extensive and life-threatening. He su§ered multiple so-tissue injuries, trauma to both kidneys, a lacerated liver and diaphragm, infections caused by three di§erent marine bacteria, pelvic and leg fractures and a massive gash on his leg that refused to heal.

Through sister hospitals within Ascension—the largest non-profit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system—Sacred Heart was able to gain access to specialized equipment previously

not available in our region. Within hours of continuously

infusing solution into his wound, hope sparked for Drew’s recovery. “Our relationships with the sta§ were like nothing we’d ever seen before,” says Drew’s

father, Trey. “Everyone involved in his recovery

treated him like he was their son. He wasn’t just another patient.”

Nearly four months aer his arrival, Drew walked out of Sacred Heart and headed home.

Fading in and out of consciousness, Pat King recalls someone saying, “We’re going to have to cut her out.” Later, she learned that an 18-wheeler, traveling at 70 mph, struck the back of her car, sending her into an embankment. Pat sustained multiple broken bones and was stabilized at an Emergency/Trauma Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Her husband, Elton, a member of the Sacred Heart

Hospital on the Emerald Coast Advisory Council, had her transferred to Sacred Heart’s Trauma Center in Pensacola. Recovering from her car-totaling accident, Pat received care in the new state-of-the-art Critical Care unit within the Bayou Tower. “When they thought I was out of danger and was ready for more rehabilitation, they sent me to the Haven of Our Lady of Peace.” Today, with the help of so many Sacred Heart caregivers, Pat is back home and walking again. “God is good,” she says.

CharleyCharley, a fun-loving two-year-old, is anything but typical. At two months old, she should have been thriving. Shortly a er discovering Charley was actually losing weight, her doctors began a myriad of tests and scans. Her diagnosis—a rare form of brain cancer, pilocytic astrocytoma.

The cancer’s e§ ect was twofold. First, it resulted in the development of an extremely rare disorder that causes failure to thrive, abnormal thinness, amnesia, intense sleepiness and unusual eye position. Secondly, due to her optic nerve traveling through the tumor, Charley is blind.

As one of the more than 200 children to receive treatment at the outpatient Pediatric Infusion Center at Sacred Heart last year, Charley underwent 15 months of treatment—once a week, for four weeks she received chemotherapy infusions, followed by a three-week break and repeat. “You never anticipate you’re going to have a baby in the NICU, especially when you have an uncomplicated pregnancy.” But that’s exactly what happened to Sarah Amole, a nurse for Sacred Heart Pensacola.” Sarah’s physician was able to identify that baby Wade was experiencing meconium ileus, which would complicate breathing on his own once born. Upon Trina’s arrival, she remembers the smiling faces of the helpful sta§members at the Haven. “Everyone I met at the Haven was awesome,” says Trina, who participated in rehab twice a day for the week she remained at the Haven. “The therapists were careful to explain what they were doing and why it was important. They all work as a team there – they were like a family that welcomed me in.”

Through the generous gis of many caring families, the Haven

constructed a 4,000 square foot rehabilitation wing.

This new construction allows patients to beer prepare to perform activities of daily living. Jessica, Manager, Rehab

Services at the Haven, says, “The rehab sta§ now

can work as a team because all of our Occupational, Physical

and Speech Therapy happens in the same space.” She adds, “The expanded space is important, especially when we have patients with low-level skills. We can help them learn how to perform activities of daily living, not only walking and bending, but also using bathtubs and showering.”

DJ

A er surviving a head-on collision, 9-year-old Dennis “DJ” Jackson of Crestview was pulled from the wreckage and airli ed from Crestview to The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola. AIRHeart-3, Sacred Heart’s newest, fastest air ambulance, transports critically sick and injured patients within a 250-mile radius covering Northwest Florida, South Alabama and Southern Georgia.

In the critical fi rst four days of his care, DJ underwent seven hours of surgery, with four separate procedures. Doctors initially told his family that he would

need approximately one month of hospital recovery a er

sustaining such major injuries—ruptured

bowels with internal bleeding, a broken and dislocated back, as well as a broken wrist and leg. Thanks to the

swi and expert level of care he received at

The Children’s Hospital, DJ was able to go home a er

only two weeks.

Mr. Claus and his Log-A-Load elves delivered toys and goodies to our smallest of patients at The Children’s Hospital to brighten their stay during this season of giving.

Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast is now o ering PET/CT imaging services in Miramar Beach. This addition of cancer-detecting technology was made possible, in large part, by a generous donation from The Dugas Family Foundation as well as support from the Sacred Heart Charity Golf Classic.

The Lewis Bear Company and Talking Rain/Sparkling Ice donated $5,000 through their fundraising e orts to support the Second Century Campaign for The Children’s Hospital.

For 100 years, Sacred Heart’s mission of compassionate, Christ-centered care has touched generations of families in Northwest Florida and South Alabama. This mission began with The Daughters of Charity, a group of Catholic Sisters who put their passion and faith into action every day to care for the sick and poor. Today, Sacred Heart Health System includes three hospitals and numerous physician o«ces and provides care for tens of thousands of our neighbors.

Our purpose is to support and further the healthcare mission by seeking charitable contributions for capital and equipment purposes for the Sacred Heart Health System. Like the Daughters of Charity, our donors put their passion and generosity into action every day to help us care for others.

Throughout the year, Sacred Heart Foundation organizes a variety of events along the Gulf Coast to raise both awareness and funding to expand the care and services we provide for patients of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. If you would like to volunteer at a fundraising event, please give us a call.
