Abstract Rose has been used by human beings for medicinal and essential oil purposes since ancient time, and even today it is globally important for various purposes. Many hybrid rose cultivars popular in present cut flower markets have been bred through hybridization from natural species. For rose oil production, the world is still dependent on naturally occurring species and their clones. Visualizing the increasing demand of rose oil in the modern era of industrializa­tion, it is pertinent to develop rose hybrids having higher oil content and other desirable characteristics.
