Family Worship Guide – Week 44 READ
o This week our family worship passage recounts the story of Jesus visiting the temple in Jerusalem. Jesus enters the temple (the court of the Gentiles) and begins to drive out everyone who is buying and selling animals and exchanging money. Jewish people would come from all over the Roman world to worship God during the week of the Passover. Part of their worship was offering animal sacrifices to God as thank offerings and sin offerings. Most people were not able to bring an animal with them because they traveled so far. Instead, they would buy an animal when they arrived. In Mark 11, we learn people were selling pigeons and exchanging money inside the temple!
o Read Mark 11:15-‐19. Why was Jesus so upset about what was happening in the temple?
o Read Isaiah 56:1-‐8. How important is it to God for foreigners to worship Him?
o Gentiles (non-‐Jews) were not permitted to enter the temple courts. They were only allowed to come as far as the Court of the Gentiles to worship and pray to God. When Jesus enters the Court of the Gentiles, He finds that business is being conducted rather than worship through prayer. Therefore, there is nowhere inside the temple complex where Gentiles can come and worship God and “make a joyful noise” in His house of prayer.
o Why do the chief priests and the scribes want to destroy Jesus? Whose authority is Jesus questioning by challenging the way the temple is operating? The Bottom Line: God desires for all peoples to worship Him and hindering people from worshipping God draws His wrath.
Questions: How important is it for us to worship God by praying to Him? Do any of our actions as a family discourage or distract other people from worshipping God? How can we encourage people to worship God?
PRAY o Read Window On The World, pg. 168-‐169 Turkey o Use Prayer Card
SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “We Return To You” o “We Return To You” was written as a correlation between personal sin and sin within the church body. We see in
Joshua chapter 7 that one man sinned (Achan), but the entire people of Israel were held accountable before God. In Luke 17, Christ tells us to rebuke our brother who is in sin. While each person is accountable for his own sin, as a church body, we are responsible for one another’s obedience to Christ. This song is a corporate prayer of confession. We as a body desire holiness and so we confess that we are sinful people, that we are helpless, and that we are completely dependent on the work of Christ on the cross to redeem us.
MEMORIZE o Mark 11:17: And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of
prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

SUGGESTIONS
These suggestions were created to help parents better communicate the Biblical truths discussed in the Family Worship Guide. These activities and questions can replace or serve as a supplement to the questions under the ‘Read’ section on Page 1. Remember, these suggestions are intended to help parents facilitate God-‐centered discussions with their children. Parents should prayerfully use these suggestions, and any other means necessary, to help their children discover the truths of God’s Word and worship Him together.
Preschool (Birth-‐Kindergarten) o Begin by asking your preschooler this question: “Do you know what it means to worship God?” Tell your child that
worship is “paying attention only to God. It is what you do to show God that you know who He is and what He has done.” Worship is a time for God and His children to be close to each other.
o Show your child examples of how you worship God throughout the week. You can listen to praise music in the car or at home, show them pictures of different musical instruments that can be used to worship, open your Bible and read Psalm 150, take your child into worship with you on Sunday, etc. Show your child how to participate in the corporate worship gathering: stand to sing, bow your head to pray, open your Bible and read from God’s word, etc.
o Model for your children and teach your children that God is their audience and that God created us to worship Him. Remind them that they can worship God in many different ways wherever they are.
Children (Grades 1-‐5)
o Imagine that you live in California, or maybe New York, and you have to travel by foot or donkey to the Temple in Florida each year to celebrate the Passover. Would this be very difficult to do? Would you be able to bring the animals that you need to sacrifice? Probably not. That’s the way it was for people in Jesus’ day. So the leaders of the Temple had set up an area where travelers could buy pigeons or other animals for sacrifice.
o Also, these people came from other countries, so they didn’t have Jewish money. This meant they would need to exchange their Egyptian, Greek or Syrian coins for Jewish ones. So the leaders also set up a bank at the Temple to make things easier for the travelers.
o That all sounds great, doesn’t it? There’s a mall and a bank right at the Temple. Just one problem, though. The mall and bank weren’t outside the Temple, they were right inside it, in a place called the Court of the Gentiles. Imagine walking into the worship room at Brook Hills and there were stores and a bank instead of seats. It’s loud because animals are there and people are speaking many different languages. Would this make it difficult to worship?
o The place where they were selling all this was the only place in the Temple where the Gentiles (non-‐Jews) were allowed to worship and pray. So they had traveled for many, many miles, and now there is nowhere for them to worship. Can you see why this made Jesus so angry? He said they had made “the house of prayer” into a “den of robbers”. This was very sad for the Gentiles, many of whom had traveled far to worship God. There was nowhere for them to worship. God wants all people to be able to worship Him. So Jesus was very angry and cleared the Temple of all these distractions.
o Why does your family go to Brook Hills’ campus each week? What is your favorite part of gathering as the church? Is it seeing friends, the music, etc? Are those things the most important reason we gather together? Worship gatherings are meant to be a place of prayer and worship. Are you there to truly worship?
o Lastly, do you ever do things in worship that could be distracting to others around you who are praying and listening to God’s Word? Examples: Talking, playing DS, playing with toys, etc. Are you there to worship? What can you do to help yourself listen better and not distract others?
Students (Grades 6-‐12)
o Describe your general experience when you attend a weekly worship gathering. What is the atmosphere like? What are the things you see and hear from the moment you walk through the front doors until you reach your seat? What do you see and hear up until worshipping together begins? What are the attitudes of those around you during the worship time?
o When people attend a worship gathering, what do you think they expect? What do you expect when you attend? o Hopefully, most people arrive with an attitude of worship. Their hearts are open to God’s Word and voice. What are
some things that distract people from worshipping Him? What are things that distract you? o There are things such as talking, texting, and excessive movement that also distract people from worshipping God
that can be controlled. How can you act in a way that eliminates as many distractions as possible? How can this benefit others in worship? How can it benefit your worship?
