This month we'll cover the mechanical LaGard 3330. Photo 1 is the dial for the LaGard and you will notice right off that instead of a crow's foot they just use a line. At least the change mark is a little smaller but it is still 8-1/3 numbers left of the opening mark. The opening directions are exactly the same as S&G (4L-3R-2L-1R to stop). It usually stops in the 95 area but not necessarily. Of course, like the S&G, if the dial has a key for daylock it usu-ally stops around 80. In photo 2 you will notice that the change key is a different shape. It’s a half moon on a slight an-gle. Now instead of turning CCW it turns 1/4 turn CW or right to unlock the wheels. Instead of having two arms that hold the wheels in place it only has one as seen in photo three. We will repeat the changing directions even though they are the same as two months ago. Open the door and lock the bolts in the open position. If necessary put a piece of tape over the opening mark so that all you can see is the change mark to the left. Now run the existing combination on the change mark (just the first three numbers) and back off to the right 5 or 10 numbers. Insert the key into the opening and turn it ¼ turn to the right. Go back to the front of the safe and enter the new numbers still not set-ting the third wheel in the forbidden zone. And again back off a few numbers. Turn the key ¼ turn left and remove it without any binding. Always try the new combination at least three times with the door open (once right on the numbers, once ½ a number low, once ½ a num-ber high). Then have the customer do it one or two times with the door still open. Then you can close the door and try the numbers again. I keep repeating the same things over and over again but it is necessary until it becomes a good habit.
