By the Block18 Surprisingly Simple QuiltsSIOBHAN ROGERS

Simple, sophisticated quilts sewn "by the block."Today's quilters have many demands on their time but still

want to create beautiful quilts. By the Block shows the time-poor quilter how to make sophisticated, complex-looking quilts that are each based on an easy-to-assemble block. The 18 quilts in the book feature modern fabric choices and clever design, but all use standard quilting techniques that are in virtually every quilter's skill set.

Author Siobhan Rogers has designed quilts ranging from crib-to-king size quilts for beds as well as several large projects suitable for hanging. Four of the quilts have colorway variations that show the versatility of the basic design. The book is organized according to technique such as log cabins, half-square triangles, or curved piecing, but each project offers a new twist on the traditional methods of piecing and constructing quilts. Some of the blocks are oversized, which help the quilter work efficiently, and the author offers additional timesaving tips.

Quilt Lovely15 Vibrant Projects Using Piecing and AppliquéJEN KINGWELL

• Jen's strong sense for color and pattern gives her quilt designs an unmatched originality. Her style is a unique and unconventional mix of brights, traditional and modern fabrics that make for distinctive, stylish quilts popular worldwide.

• Projects are engineered for shop owners to sell fabrics and quilting notions.

• Jen intertwines traditional designs with modern fabrics to appeal to a wide variety of quilters. She also puts more focus on hand quilting and piecing than other quilting books, which provides hand quilters with resources and offers machine quilters the chance to learn new techniques.

The 9 quilt designs and 6 cushions designs in this book play into the resurgence of hand stitching, as hand piecing, hand appliqué and hand quilting are the author's passion. Yet these color-infused creations will also appeal to machine quilters looking for a fresh, new quilting challenge. Each design includes instructions and illustrations to reproduce each piece, as well as an appendix of general quilting information.

The Irresistible NovelHow to Craft an Extraordinary Story That Engages Readers from Start to FinishJEFF GERKE

• 60% of the Writer's Digest audience falls into the beginner-to-intermediate skill level, and more than 80% of that audience wants to write a novel-length project. The Irresistible Novel targets both groups

• Examines the popular topic of "rules" in fiction writing (including those pertaining to prologues, speech attributions, chapter length, passive voice, and more) and guides writers in deciding whether the rule applies to their story or style

What keeps readers entranced and enthralled with a story—and how can authors deliver this experience every time? Jeff Gerke's The Irresistible Novel breaks down what the reading public wants, why they want it, and how to write a story that will satisfy both the writer and the audience—even if it means breaking every rule of fiction. In the end, authors will discover the single "Great Commandment of Fiction Writing": They must always hook and engage the reader.

Fiction Writing Master ClassEmulating the Work of Great Novelists to Master the Fundamentals of CraftWILLIAM CANE

• Explores core fiction-writing elements in a whole new way by dissecting the styles and approaches of twenty-one master writers

• Appeals to writers as well as literature and composition students, humanities professors, book lovers, and more

Most writing books on the market today stress the concept of originality. While this may be an admirable goal, it neglects a centuries-old, time-tested method of writing instruction that trained authors from Shakespeare to Faulkner to Malcolm X. With its fresh twist on a proven theme, Fiction Writing Master Class revives this grand tradition of classical rhetoric, explaining in contemporary language how modern writers can do their best work by learning from the writing styles of the greats.

Advanced AR-15 Tactical Shooter's HandbookCORK GRAHAM

Advanced AR-15 Tactical Shooter's Handbook delivers a wealth of information on how to use the AR15, training through real-case scenarios, as a civilian, military, or law en-forcement shooter, in order to be prepared when confronted by an active threat during a combat shooting event.

By learning these skills, many operators of M16s and AR15 platforms will better improve their overall skillset and likeli-hood of surviving an extreme combat event with a rifle: CQB, dark/twilight conditions, running out of ammo, to name but a few scenarios.

This book will help the reader thoroughly understand and appreciate the difference between advanced shooting tech-niques and advanced combat shooting techniques.

If you're intention is to go further than the average trained shooter, to become a "real" combat shooter and increase your likelihood of surviving a gunfight, with all esoteric knowledge and necessary skills that have been almost lost, in even many of the firearms training schools offered by the military, then this is a must read.

• Goes beyond the mechanics and skills of becoming a marksman, offering the skills and knowledge to efficiently use the AR15 as a combat shooter confronted by an equally armed aggressor

• Accesses skills that have been handed down over the centuries on how to best carry and implement a killing weapon from a warrior's point of view, as opposed to that of a target shooter

Detailed information and reviews of available bullets help the reader understand bullet technology and performance, allowing them to customize their hunting/shooting rig through the purchase of a proper projectile. Understanding the physical attributes of a projectile will allow the reader to tailor the ammunition to the job at hand, be it small game, big game, long range targets, etc.

PHILIP P. MASSARO West Coxsackie, NY

As an author for Gun Di-gest and Gun Digest The Magazine, and the President of the Massaro Media Group, he has direct contact with all the major bullet manufacturers, and is able to discuss the properties of existing and newly developed products.

Firearms Instruction for BeginnersJERRY LUCIANO

• Written by an author who has more than a decade of experience introducing youth to shooting, hunting, and the outdoors

• Offers step-by-step instruction in the proper and safe process for introducing kids to firearms, regardless of age or life-stage

• More than 100 images illustrate important points

This book lays out, step by step, the proper and safe process for introducing kids to firearms, regardless of age or life-stage, details warning signs to watch for, and offers “tips and tricks” to facilitate the process.

Every kid is different. Each youth out there is raised in a different family size, struc-ture, has different size, stature, physical ability, pain tolerance (yes, shooting can be painful) with different political beliefs, and access to both firearms and places to shoot.

If you want to introduce your children, or a child you know, to firearms and/or ensure that your child knows about guns (what they can do, their proper use and handling) and make sure they are SAFE – this is the book for you!

Citizen's Guide to Armed DefenseKEVIN R. DAVIS

Millions of citizens are purchasing firearms— for personal safety, and to protect their family and home in a day and age when police budgets have been slashed and violent criminals prey upon the defenseless. But owning a firearm is only one part of the equation. Knowledge is power and understanding the threat is key to successfully stopping it. Operating the handgun or long-gun effectively and accurately is vital to surviving an armed encounter, as well as understanding the effects of stress on performance and knowing the laws of self-defense and deadly force. And finally, the armed citizen must prepare for a safe and positive interaction with responding police and investigators. Owning a firearm is only one step—this manual will take you to the next level.

The Vampires of EdenWILLIAM M. O’BRIEN

As Paul Hereford turns onto the two-lane road leading into his hometown, he has no idea he’s about to embark on a life-changing odyssey that will bring him both heartache and redemption. After decades of politics and a literary career on the East Coast, Paul settles down to write one more book—not a novel, but something new: serious nonfiction. As the work progresses, the writing becomes more difficult, the memories clearer, and the characters more familiar. Paul unexpectedly finds himself on a journey of atonement—and discovers that the past is never really past.

Find Edsell!ELSA BORNSTEIN

It’s long past midnight on the Jersey shore when the blue van rolls quietly through Seaside Heights. The man behind the wheel smiles as he spots seventeen-year-old Edsell Jones lumbering drunkenly down the street. He offers Edsell a ride and shortly thereafter the driver, van, and Edsell disappear. When Edsell’s mother finds that he’s gone missing, she calls the police, then Edsell's friends, begging them to help. When the quest leads the teens to a bizarre drug-treatment facility, they can’t help but wonder if the doctor in charge is really telling them the truth—especially once the screaming begins.
