Marlene asked me to distribute the field report regarding the site observations referenced in

my e-mail yesterday; please find that document attached. For convenience, I have attached the

sheets referenced in my e-mail as well.

Also, while our observations have been stated presumptively, we would appreciate responses

to the following project elements:

1. There appears to be a conflict between the description of on Sheet M0.6 and the riser

diagram on Sheet M4.5. Drawings identifying each smoke control system component and its

proper function are among the elements required by IBC Section 909.18.9 at the conclusion of

the project. Please clarify the route of the air exhausted by the smoke control system.

2. Wood material and caulking around the annular space of the duct riser at the floor

penetration was observed during our site visit. Please clarify the purpose of this material. If it is

Mobile +1 206 437 6059Fax +1 206 903 0979

to remain, specific approval should be sought from City of Bellevue in accordance with IBC

Section 603.1.

3. Please confirm the method of construction of the ductwork and joints.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian

Marlene:

As we have discussed, there seems to be some confusion regarding how corridor exhaust is

accomplished during smoke control.

During our meeting together, Bart explained the design approach involving use of the space

around the duct within the central corridor shaft, and Al mentioned how gypsum shafts can be

challenging based on Bellevue’s amendment for smoke control systems.

However, based on conditions observed during a site visit by AEGIS Engineering, it appears that

the space around the duct riser within the gypsum shaft enclosure is not intended to support

air movement.

This is consistent with the statement under Item 3 on Sheet M0.6 which identifies that the

smoke exhaust riser and HVAC riser share the same riser. Incidentally, the riser diagram on

Sheet M4.5 should be updated accordingly.

Therefore, we do not anticipate relying on the tightness of the gypsum shaft enclosure.

When we perform the duct pressure test, openings to the duct should be sealed so we are

observing leakage of the ductwork itself.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.
