A servant leader is someone who is a servant first, and so they contribute to the well-being of people and community. A servant leader focuses on the needs of the people and asks, “How can I help others to solve problems?” It sounds to me that by defining servant leadership, I actually just defined each and every one of our volunteers! Tom Strauss, chief executive officer of Summa Health System once said, “At Summa, we place the patient at the top of the organizational chart – with all of us in the role of servant leaders. That means we each share a responsibility to serve the patient or to serve those who do. That’s what makes us Summa – and that’s what allows us to fulfill our mission to provide the highest quality, compassionate care to our patients.” Volunteers tell me they want to hear stories of how Summa makes a difference in people’s lives. Here is one such story: When Valerie Horton was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, she chose a doctor with Summa who came highly recommended by friends who worked at other medical facilities. With technology and specialized services in the treatment of women’s cancers, she felt confident in choosing Summa. “Summa did a good job of explaining things to me. I had surgery on June 8. It was an outpatient surgery, surprisingly.” Horton had six and a half weeks of radiation treatment thereafter. “I am cancer free today…if I’m going to live, for my husband and my son, then these are the people that I think I should place myself in the hands of.” I hope these stories motivate and inspire individuals to be part of Summa’s team. Our volunteers come to Summa for many different reasons, such as: to give back to the community, to strengthen their resume, to meet new people or to expand their horizons. Whatever the reason may be that brought you to Summa, we thank you, because through your service, we are able to offer our patients, like Valerie Horton, a high quality, patient-focused environment which is so vital to meet the needs of our community. Volunteer Daphne Hamblin shared, “I volunteer at Summa because I can help others and also give back to the community. It is rewarding and gratifying doing something good.” Another volunteer shared, “I volunteer here at St. Thomas in order to lessen the workload of the department I’m in. I also enjoy being around friendly people and I enjoy giving back to my community.” Everything you bring to Summa is so meaningful, and we thank you for choosing our organization to share your tremendous gift of time and talent. As Calvin Coolidge once said, “No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor is given by what he gave.” You each give our organization so much. Your contributions are recognized through the positive feedback from our employees, patients and visitors. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that we value each of you and hold you in the highest esteem as Summa volunteers who truly make a difference.
