A Message from the President

Dear Friends,

What an amazing year this has been for our college and our community. Our economy is recovering, and the generosity and kindness of our community is stronger than ever.

Generous grant funding for new state-of-the-art equipment and programs has enhanced job training and education to help prepare our citizens for local, good-paying jobs in the rapidly growing manufacturing industry. FVCC has partnered with the Montana University System to explore the creation of a University Center on our campus with the goal of bringing more higher education opportunities to the Flathead Valley. Our ties with our neighbors, Salish Kootenai College and Blackfeet Community College, have strengthened, providing new opportunities for exchanges and partnerships. And, kind gifts from generous donors are making college education possible for many of our students.

This year, as you will see in this report, exemplifies how one small gesture makes a ripple. Whether it is one person’s action that creates a positive change, an idea that results in a new program, or any gift that helps build a new nursing and health science building, the overall lasting impact forever touches countless lives and helps our community continue to prosper.

I have been fortunate in my position as chair of the American Association of Community Colleges’ Board to travel the nation and the world to network with other community college leaders, sharing our best practices and learning about theirs. Yet, no matter where I travel or what I learn, it is always clear to me that our college and our community are phenomenal because of your generosity. We would not be the community college we are today without your support. We could not be the extraordinary community we are if it was not for your human touch. We are thankful every day for you.

On April 30, 2013, Flathead Valley Community College celebrated a milestone with the dedication of its first privately-funded building, the Rebecca Chaney Broussard Center for Nursing and Health Science. The center was funded by the Broussard Family’s $4 million gift, the largest private gift ever given to the college, and $1.36 million in donations from members of the community as a tribute to the late Rebecca Chaney Broussard, a former nurse and philanthropist. Family members and close friends of Becky’s joined members of the college and area communities to honor Becky and to commemorate a turning point of health care education in Northwest Montana. The state-of-the art facility houses classes and labs for nursing, as well as other health science programs, and is home to the college’s first Student Health Clinic, providing affordable basic health services to FVCC students.

Ruth Rickenbacher understands the importance of making a difference. A mother and the sole provider of two boys, Ruth commutes 54 miles a day to FVCC where she is a full-time honors student. Her leadership roles as assistant editor of FVCC’s student newspaper and as service learning project chair have given her platforms to promote and encourage others to volunteer. As a full-tuition scholarship recipient, Ruth also voluntarily shares her story and gratitude to donors to inspire them to continue supporting students with financial barriers.

Perhaps one of Ruth’s most significant impacts was her leadership in the Renewable Resources Club. As club coordinator, Ruth championed recycling and waste reduction on campus. She pioneered a number of new initiatives including clothing swap events, organized carpools, educational workshops and a community-wide week-long Earth Matters event.

This spring, Ruth earned national recognition as a 2013 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow, a title she shares with 180 other college student leaders from across the nation who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing our nation’s communities.

Full Circle SuccessA 1968 newspaper ad published in the Daily Inter Lake listed Flathead High School student Rick Weaver as one of the “young men and women most likely to succeed.” Little did Rick know that 42 years later he would lead the paper. Interestingly, Rick began his career in the newspaper industry as a carrier for the Daily Inter Lake and as production manager of his high school newspaper, the Flathead Arrow. After graduating from FVCC and later The University of Montana, Rick returned to the Daily Inter Lake as an assistant circulation director. Through the years,

he rose to the role of publisher for newspapers in Havre, Bozeman and Idaho before returning to Kalispell and the Daily Inter Lake where he would assume his current role as publisher.

In addition to receiving the Montana Newspaper Association’s Master Editor/Publisher Award for lifetime contributions and serving on multiple community boards, including the FVCC Alumni Council, Rick was honored with FVCC’s 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award.

With his long family roots in the Flathead, his dedication to Kalispell and the Flathead Valley is second to none, and under his direction, the Inter Lake has re-established itself as a community leader willing to help out in causes as diverse as breast cancer awareness, homelessness and hunger, and school activities. With more than 10 newspapers under his leadership in Northwest Montana, Rick is committed to using his position not just to run a successful business, but also to aid in the growth of our community.”

Award-winning ServiceFVCC achieved the nation’s highest honor awarded to schools for its leadership in service learning and civic engagement when the Corporation for National and Community Service named the college to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. FVCC was among 690 colleges and universities in the nation recognized with the honor and among only 113 of those to earn the recognition of Honor Roll with Distinction. This past year, 403 FVCC students provided more than 10,495 volunteer community service hours. In addition, 95 Campus Corps members provided 44,941 hours of service through their clinical hours, internships, externships and student teaching.

“FVCC students who participate in service learning offer a wide range of skills and abilities to enrich the lives of others in our community while touching the lives of many of those in need. Our students arrive at their service sites with remarkable willingness to learn from physically, emotionally and intellectually demanding experiences, no matter the focus. From Habitat projects and working with area citizens with disabilities to providing free car washes for our nation’s servicemen and veterans, these experiences enable our students to grow and learn new skill sets while teaching the importance of responsible stewardship. These experiences go beyond what our students earn in a classroom; they will stay with our students for the rest of their lives.”

Room to GrowWith a growing student population, Olney-Bissell School was in significant need of additional space to provide its students with the best education possible. Unfortunately, it lacked the funds to support the cost of labor to build a new facility. In a collaborative effort, the school teamed up with FVCC’s building trades program to construct a new 30-by-30 foot stand-alone multipurpose facility. Traditionally a residential student built house program, this project became the first building trades construction project in the program’s 17-year history that involved a local community school. FVCC building trades, heavy equipment operator and electrical technology students donated their labor to complete the building at no cost to the taxpayers. The kids at Olney-Bissell equally achieved a valuable educational experience–watching the new facility come to life right before their eyes.

“We are loving our new building! The extra classroom space has been devotedto science, art and music–all of which have never had a home. The teachers no longer need to carry music stands and instruments, paint brushes and microscopes from class to class, and the rest of the school is not impacted by trumpets blaring. Our school is very thankful to Greg Waldrop, the building trades program and FVCC for taking on this project and the time and energy they put toward this special collaborative effort.”

Following a tax incentive from the Flathead County Commission in partnership with Flathead Electric Cooperative, F.H. Stoltze Land & Lumber became the proud owner of a new biomass steam boiler. When the Columbia Falls-based company learned it needed licensed first-class boiler engineers to run the new equipment, it partnered with the FVCC Continuing

Education Center to develop a training course. FVCC launched its inaugural First-class Boiler Engineer Licensing Preparation course, meeting the educational needs for a variety of Montana businesses that hire first-class boiler engineers. The first class to complete the program achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the license exam.

Legacy GiftThe late Thain and Fay White, former residents of Dayton, shared a passion for education and a vision to make a remarkable and lasting impact on FVCC and local students.

Raised near Rollins, Thain helped his father run the White family’s Columbia Sheep Company. The self-taught historian, archaeologist and naturalist created the Flathead Lake Lookout Museum near Lakeside in 1949. Many of his published research papers are archived at Gonzaga University and The University of Montana. Fay, a descendant of early Scottish and English pioneers in Canada, was originally from Mankota, Saskatchewan, Canada. After graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1953, she sought employment in the Flathead Valley where she met and married Thain. In her later years, she traveled, was an avid reader and enrolled in classes at FVCC to support her interests in world events, politics, history and economics. Fay was described by those who knew her as “a private person, independent, and self-sufficient, but also very caring and generous in nature.” Thain passed away in 1999, and Fay in 2012.

The Whites left a remarkable $2 million legacy gift to the FVCC Foundation, establishing The Thain and Fay White Family Endowment to support FVCC and its future needs.

Global VisionIn an effort to strengthen ties among U.S. community colleges and Chinese vocational and technical institutions, FVCC welcomed a delegation from China. Six delegates, including three Chinese college presidents, spent two weeks learning about FVCC, its business and industry partnerships and Northwest Montana’s culture.

The tour concluded with the delegates and FVCC President Jane Karas signing of a letter of intent to explore exchanges of students and faculty between countries. FVCC was among three U.S. two-year colleges that hosted delegations through the American Association of Community Colleges and the China Education Association for International Education’s Vocational/Technical Education Leadership Training Program.

The partnership between U.S. community colleges and Chinese vocational and technical institutions is significant in growing our global economy. This partnership is allowing us to get a close personal look at each other’s educational systems so we can develop a better understanding of best practices, the latest technologies and how colleges serve their communities. This is a win-win across the globe.”

Mama JeanieThis spring, long-time Adult Basic Education/GED Instructor Jeanie Manion hung up her hat after a 40-year career at FVCC. Over the years, “Mama Jeanie” transformed thousands of students, giving them self-confidence and a passion for learning. She helped students from teens to senior citizens complete their high school requirements to enter college and later become successful X-Ray technicians, counselors and even government politicians. Throughout her career, Jeanie saw a common theme in the success of her students—having a good attitude and a smile along the way. Students would add having a teacher who listens and believes in them is even more key to their success.

“It is safe to say that anyone who knows Jeanie thinks of her as the epitome of the word teacher. She is caring, respectful, encouraging and supportive, while helping her students learn to take ownership and responsibility for their actions and their lives. Jeanie was paid the highest compliment possible by her students who turned their lives around because she cared about and believed in them when they felt no one else did.”

Role Models for All

“Kirke and Helen are unmatched in character, kindness, generosity and family values. Throughout their generous contributions of time, talent and treasure, they have continued to focus on caring for others and making this community a better place. Over a lifetime, Kirke and Helen have set a standard for all of us to follow. They are role models for all of us.”


It is nearly impossible to describe the magnitude Dr. Van Kirke and Helen Nelson have had on Northwest Montana. The couple was honored for using their gifts of vision, leadership and passion to make a difference in the community when FVCC President Jane Karas presented them with her eighth annual Montana Mentor Award.

One of the first medical specialists in obstetrics and gynecology in Kalispell, Kirke mentored scores of young physicians and drove advancements in health care, facilities and technical equipment to meet modern needs, leaving a lasting impact on Northwest Montana’s medical community. Outside of his work, Kirke served as a founding member of A.L.E.R.T. and the Flathead Outpatient Surgical Center as well as on numerous other boards. He worked with the Montana Medicaid Division, lobbying for improvements in women’s and children’s health care.

In addition to mentoring their five children and 15 grandchildren, Helen, a former registered nurse, has offered her time and talents as an active community

volunteer in numerous capacities. She is best known for dedicating 25 years of service on the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts Foundation and playing an instrumental role in securing funds for the new playhouse and its recent upgrades. Helen has opened their home to various nonprofit visiting groups, serving as host family. For more than 40 years, she has invited elementary school students for a field trip into their home to view Kirke’s American Indian artifact collection.

Together, the Nelsons continue to actively support the local arts community. In addition to being regular supporters of the Hockaday Museum of Art and the Kalispell Education Foundation’s Fine Arts Night, which provides a scholarship for the FVCC Art Department, they established the Glacier Gallery in Kalispell to give unknown local artists a venue to showcase their works.

Most recently, the couple served as honorary leaders for FVCC’s Rebecca Chaney Broussard Center for Nursing and Health Science building campaign.

A Family Tradition The Mercords have made FVCC a family tradition. Chuck’s role in the founding of the college and the creation of the FVCC Foundation set the shining example for other Mercords to follow.

Today, the Mercord’s commitment to FVCC continues. In addition to being one of FVCC’s biggest advocates, Kathy Mercord serves on the FVCC Associate Foundation Board and committees. She oversees the Owen E. Sowerwine, Alton Pearce and Milton Mercord Memorial Fund at FVCC, established in part in memory of Chuck’s father, Milton Mercord.Chuck and Kathy’s daughter, Leslie, has played an extensive role on the Foundation Board, serving five years as treasurer before rising to board chair two years ago. Under her leadership of the board’s finance and investment committee, the Foundation’s assets doubled, events and projects grew, and a record number of scholarships were awarded.

In memory of Chuck’s legacy, the Mercord family is supporting The Scholars Program at FVCC in a special way. Through gifts from family and community members, the memorial provided generous funding to build the Scholars classroom and study area and to establish an endowment to award grants to students so they can attend regional and national conferences to present their undergraduate research. The endowment also provides an annual Mercord Family Scholarship for a student with great financial need.

The Mercords were recognized at the President’s Donor Dinner for their generational commitment to FVCC, becoming the 24th recipient of the college’s prestigious Eagle Award.

The Right Thing at the Right TimeTo support innovative job training in Northwest Montana, FVCC received two federal Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Community College and Career Training initiative grants totaling $3,652,969 from the U.S. Department of Labor in coordination with the U.S. Department of Education.

The first grant, in the amount of $2,999,969, responds to the needs of 600 local manufacturing businesses by creating innovative training programs in advanced manufacturing. In partnership with industry, this training will support the projected substantial job growth in Northwest Montana into the future.

The second grant, totaling $653,000, was awarded to FVCC through a partnership with Pueblo Community College in Colorado to help create remote laboratory experiences for FVCC’s health programs. The grant will provide the means for health care prerequisite classes, such as chemistry, physics and biology, to be offered online, revolutionizing FVCC’s science labs and enabling students to conduct virtual science experiments.

“The recent emergence of our local manufacturing industry has left the public workforce and our college little time to respond to the growing workforce demands. This grant will help us serve TAA-eligible and other unemployed and incumbent workers in a timely and cost-effective manner while preparing them for local good-paying jobs in a booming industry.”

A Big Hartfor VeteransFollowing a 15-month combat tour in Iraq, Andrew Hart, an 11B Infantryman, returned home to Kalispell and enrolled at FVCC. Like many other veterans, Andrew experienced the challenging and sometimes overwhelming transition from military life to civilian life. During his time at FVCC, he captivated the campus community by serving as an advocate for student veterans and by playing an instrumental role in resurrecting the Veteran’s Association on campus. After graduating from FVCC this spring, Andrew spent the summer in Washington, D.C., completing an internship with U.S. Senator Jon Tester’s Subcommittee on Homeland Security through a George Mason University scholarship.

Today, Andrew attends Carroll College in Helena, majoring in public administration and philosophy with plans to later attend law school or pursue a graduate program in public affairs.

“I first came to know Andrew as his “Re-Examining America’s Modern Wars, 1898 – Present” instructor. His experiences as a combat soldier in Iraq were invaluable in the class, for he gave personal testimony to both the honor and the horror of war. As a combat veteran, this was not an easy class for Andrew, but nonetheless, he quickly distinguished himself as a leader and helped to engage other students in lively discourse and debate. Moreover, Andrew carried those efforts beyond the classroom. Without Andrew’s inspiration, hard work and willingness to put himself ‘out there,’ we might not have the strongly resurgent veterans’ association we have at FVCC today.”

In August 2012, FVCC welcomed its second Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, providing the community a rare opportunity to learn traditional Maori art from a master artist and performer. Karl Rangikawhiti Leonard, of Ngongotaha, Rotorua, New Zealand, brought a lifetime of experience in traditional Maori art forms including weaving, carving and dance that he passionately shared with the citizens of Northwest Montana. In addition to teaching, he presented numerous free presentations for the community and area schools.

Under Karl’s leadership, FVCC hosted an exhibit of Native American contemporary paintings from the Red Cloud Heritage Center Collection in South Dakota. At the opening, Karl and his family performed the opening blessing followed by traditional Maori song and dance to dedicate the exhibit. In addition, Karl strengthened our bridges of friendship and understanding between FVCC and the people of Salish Kootenai College and Blackfeet Community College .

“Karl’s presence was captivating and tremendously powerful. When he would perform, the room would silence in awe. He could mesmerize and engage any audience, young or old, and had a gift of telling the Maori story so at the end of his performances, everyone left having a new and thoughtful respect for the Maori culture and its simple way of life. Karl made a lot of noise while he was here, and upon his departure back to his country, the sounds of his songs, the intensity of his dances and the richness of his storytelling quietly faded, leaving those he touched with a sense of loss and sadness. He taught us the importance of embracing our ancestors and culture, and because of that, he forever changed our valley in a better way.”

Cultural Exchange

Economic SpringboardWhen Flathead Valley employers needed jobs filled, FVCC teamed up with the Flathead Job Service to present the 2013 Flathead Valley Job Fair on the college campus. More than 900 job-seekers looking for full-time, part-time and seasonal work networked with 63 participating employers, shared their resumes and in some cases, interviewed for jobs right on the spot. According to Flathead Job Service Business Resource Consultant Roberta Diegel, the event played a role in reducing the veteran unemployment rate from 22 percent to 5.5 percent and overall unemployment from 8.4 percent to 6 percent.

“The 2013 Flathead Valley Job Fair was a wonderful, collaborative success. It was amazing the number of job offers that were generated from the Job Fair that led to full-time permanent work. The partnership we developed with our partners was nothing short of amazing. We experienced the largest and most successful targeted job fair in Flathead Valley history.”

In partnership with Farm Hands, Montana West Economic Development, Flathead County Economic Development Authority and the Lake County Community Development Corporation, the FVCC Continuing Education Center launched a new non-credit, “Multifunctional Farming: Creating New Markets for Your Business” course to assist farmers and ranchers looking for new and innovative ways to generate farm income.

Students teamed up with FVCC’s entrepreneurship students to develop new business plans. Some of the students, including Jim Cummings, owner of KMC Ranches, have begun bringing their plans to life.

Due to the effectiveness of the course, other institutions in Missoula and Bozeman have started similar courses using the FVCC model. The course was funded by the Montana Department of Agriculture.

Thinking Outside the Box

“I think this new approach we learned, plus the networking with other students, helped us all develop business plans we can use for the future. I have seen some success in my business selling my grass-fed Wagyu beef to local restaurants, catering businesses and individuals, plus I’ve started utilizing a house on one of my farms for summer rentals. “The Windmill Scholarship has made it possible for so many students in high expense programs to stay in school. This $1 million gift will provide assistance to students well into the future. We remain extremely grateful to those who had the vision for this scholarship and the generosity to sustain it for years to come.”


This past year, the Windmill Foundation Fund, which provides scholarships to cover additional educational expenses beyond tuition, fees and books, was endowed with a $1 million gift to the Foundation.

This scholarship makes college possible for many students like Eryn Edelen, mother of four. Costly lab fees, equipment, uniforms, testing fees, software, disability assistance or child care are expenses that qualify for this very unique and thoughtful support of students. Since its creation in 2008, the Windmill Fund has provided over $275,000 to fund 390 scholarship awards for FVCC students.

FVCC welcomed more than 90 Montana artists in the Montana Artrepreneurship Program for the 2012 Montana Artists Gathering. The event, featuring a showcase and sale of participating artists’ works, opened with a welcoming reception hosted by the FVCC Art Department and sponsored by Parkside Federal Credit Union.

Northwest Montana Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director Chris Parson was honored with the SBDC Excellence and Innovation Award by the U.S. Small Business Administration for Region VIII. The regional award is given annually to honor an SBDC for excellence in providing value to small businesses and advancing program delivery and management through innovation.

In the summer of 2012, the FVCC Continuing Education Center launched a Gunsmithing program designed to embrace fine craftsmanship and the sporting traditions of the Flathead Valley with the hopes of increasing the resources available to area gun manufacturers and local law enforcement. The program is one of five short-term gunsmithing programs offered in the country. Courses are taught by Brandon Miller, owner of Miller Precision Arms in Kalispell; Fred Zeglin, owner of Z-Hat Custom Inc. in Kalispell; and Lee Helgeland, one of our nation’s premier stockmakers and a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild Board of Directors.

Highlights

The FVCC Art Department raised a record $20,000 at its third annual Big Night fundraiser, an event to support student scholarships for its 2014 Semester in Venice program. Highlights of the evening included an Italian-inspired dinner created by FVCC culinary students, an art display and testimonials by students who have participated in the program.

FVCC hosted its sixth annual College for a Day, welcoming approximately 675 juniors from Flathead, Glacier, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Polson and Lincoln County high schools, Laser Alternative High School and Montana Academy. Students spent the day experiencing a college campus, interacting with college faculty and exploring the diverse career options available in the workforce. Parkside Federal Credit Union sponsored the event and donated four $250 college scholarships.

Flathead Valley Community College welcomed a record number of students to its 19th annual Senior Institute this spring. The program enrolled more than 295 senior citizens and involved a series of 14 credit classes with subjects ranging from watercolor, the Civil War and beginning yoga to computers, line dancing and the U.S. economy.

FVCC graduated its 45th class May 17, 2013 during the college’s spring 2013 commencement. The college recognized 401 graduates for completing 445 degrees and certificates during the 2012-2013 academic year. FVCC Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Karl Rangikawhiti Leonard of Ngongotahā, Rotoru, New Zealand, served as commencement speaker.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Karen Leigh’s career teaching watercolor courses at FVCC, the Art Department hosted a “40 Years of Watercolor” exhibit by Karen’s current and former students. Throughout her career, Karen has enabled countless students to realize their artistic aspirations.

Highlights

Laurie Peiffer, FVCC’s Early Childhood Center director, was presented the 2012 Montana Association for the Education of Young Children (MtAEYC) Early Childhood Service Award at the annual MtAEYC Early Childhood Conference in Kalispell. She received the award for her exemplary service to MtAEYC at the state level while maintaining an active role at the local level to support and serve programs that nurture and educate young children and their families.

FVCC introduced Grandparent’s College to its continuing education programming, offering older members of the community the unique opportunity to spend time with grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or young friends in a fun and educational setting. The classes sparked great interest among the community, generating a waiting list to enroll in the classes.

Former FVCC student Captain Jason Curtis, an F-16 pilot with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, delivered a presentation to FVCC engineering students during a visit to his hometown of Kalispell. Curtis was selected to serve as the opposing solo pilot, and next year, he will serve as the lead solo pilot among the squadron of six pilots that perform up to 88 prestigious air show demonstrations across the nation each year.

This spring, Chef’s Table, presented by the students of The Culinary Institute of Montana at FVCC under the direction of instructor Chef Howard Karp, teamed up with the FVCC Foundation to host a special April in Paris dinner on April 19. The event featured a five-course French-themed meal in the ambiance of 1920s Paris along with the sounds of Cole Porter and early jazz by The Don Caverly Quartet and students in the FVCC Jazz Ensemble. The event raised approximately $17,000 in proceeds to benefit FVCC students with the greatest financial needs.

Early Childhood Education Professor Marlyn James presented “Observational Assessment and Portfolios that Truly Inform Curriculum Planning for Individual Children” at the 2012 National Association for the Education of Young Children Annual Conference in Atlanta. The second edition of James’s book, “Focused Observations, How to Observe Children for Assessment and Curriculum Planning,” was released in January.

FVCC graduated its first class of registered nursing (RN) graduates. Ten students from across the Flathead Valley were honored during a traditional pinning ceremony August 10, 2012 for successfully completing their Associate of Science in Nursing degrees.

FVCC welding and electrical technology faculty and students teamed up to build the Flathead Valley’s first dragon boat trailer for transporting boats for the Montana Dragon Boat Festival. The project was initiated by dragon boat enthusiasts including FVCC alumnus Bruce Gunderson and his wife, Jennifer, founding members of Flathead Valley’s official dragon boat race team, the Flathead Dragonflies.

Physics Instructor Jim Boger was appointed to serve on the Montana Space Grant Consortium Technical Advisory Committee. Jim, along with his peers on the committee, reviews the strategies and larger grants related to space work across Montana.

FVCC student Tanner Morrison, center, achieved great success during his last year of engineering studies at FVCC. Besides winning a $1,500 NASA scholarship and being selected for USA Today’s All-Montana Academic Team, Tanner was awarded the honor of Coca-Cola New Century Scholar. As the top scoring student in the Montana, Tanner was recognized at the American Association of Community College Annual Convention in San Francisco where he was presented a $2,000 scholarship and plaque from the Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. In addition, Tanner was a top prize winner at the Montana Space Grant Consortium Symposium.

Faith Hodges, retired executive administrator, and Dr. David Scott, Ed.D., retired philosophy, education and religion instructor, were recognized as FVCC’s 2013 Emeritus Honorees at a special celebration. Faith and David were presented the unique and special honor for serving FVCC with distinction over their lengthy careers.

Students in The Scholars Program at FVCC presented research at two different regional conferences in the spring. Tanner Morrison, Andrew Hart, Seth Donahue, Tyler Rasmussen, Hannah Brinton, Louis Grisez and Andrea Kavert, accompanied by FVCC faculty Dr. Christina Relyea, Dr. David Long and Dr. Jessica Hopkins, traveled to the Western Regional Honors Council Annual Conference in Flagstaff, Ariz. Three other students, JonAlan Osborne, Heather Fraley and Stephanie Christensen, traveled with faculty Jerry Lundgren and Dr. Sue Justis to Missoula for The University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research.

Dr. Heather Estrada, FVCC Agriculture program director, spearheaded the planting of a 4,000 square-foot organically-managed garden on the FVCC campus. To support efforts, a Farm Fresh Stand was constructed by occupational trades instructors Greg Waldrop and Mort Hill along with volunteers from Leadership Flathead and FVCC. The stand has been used weekly throughout the summer and fall months to sell farm fresh vegetables and fruits grown in the garden to the FVCC community.

Science and math faculty Jim Boger, Dr. David Long and Dr. Don Hickethier accompanied four students to the Montana Space Grant Consortium Symposium at Montana State University in Bozeman. Engineering students Tanner Morrison and Louis Grisez presented their work on the solar spectrograph they constructed with other FVCC students for the 2013 Student Solar Spectrograph Competition and won the top prize for group presentations. Joining them were chemistry undergraduate research students Laurel Sugden and Kristi Lundgren who presented their research on Zinc-Air batteries. FVCC represented the only two-year college at the event.

Music and Theatre Professor Craig Naylor, D.M.A., is now a registered presenter for the Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau and Speakers in the Schools for his research into “Unknown Heroes of the Civil War.” Craig’s presentation involves bringing to life the heroic deeds of three obscure but influential Civil War figures through a fusion of history and music.

Highlights

FVCC hosted the nation’s first Ceramics Festiva. The event was inspired by FVCC ceramics instructors David Smith and Stephen Braun and engaged 17 nationally-recognized artists in teaching workshops and showcasing firing techniques to local artists and interested community members.

FVCC served as Northwest Montana’s hub for local, state and national political debates and community candidate forums during the 2012 election year. Events included a Montana U.S. Senate debate with Senator Jon Tester, Congressman Denny Rehberg and Mr. Dan Cox; a Montana gubernatorial debate with Mr. Rick Hill and Attorney General Steve Bullock; and three community candidate forums featuring candidates running for local and county office.

FVCC held a dedication ceremony October 1, 2012 for its new ceramic mural located on an outside wall of the Arts and Technology Building. Under the direction of Mathematics Instructor Don Hickethier, Ph.D., and Art Instructor David Smith, the mural was designed by 23 Scholars Program students. The mural, based on a Fibonacci Spiral, consists of over 200 ceramic tiles that spiral toward each other to a common center combining the representations of art and technology.

Valley Ford in Kalispell partnered with the FVCC Student Ambassadors to hold a Drive 4 UR School event, a program launched by Ford Motor Company to help raise much needed funding for local community groups and nonprofit organizations. For every person who test-drove a new Ford vehicle at Valley Ford during the event, Ford donated $20 to FVCC. With test drive donations and a gift from Valley Ford, $2,500 was raised to establish a Student Ambassadors scholarship fund.

The FVCC Foundation’s Festival of Flavors 2012 event raised record net proceeds of more than $100,000 for student scholarships and programs at FVCC. During the 2012-13 academic year, the FVCC Foundation awarded 256 scholarships totaling $540,000 to FVCC students. Funding for scholarships is raised from Foundation events as well as endowed, annual and community-sponsored contributions.

For the first time, the FVCC Foundation awarded up to $20,000 in summer scholarships for students enrolled in degree programs to help students in need, including those who would have relied on Pell Grants to finance their summer education.

President Jane Karas honored donors for their immense generosity to FVCC at the annual President’s Donor Dinner in May.

More than 80 FVCC volunteers gave their time to help make The Event at Rebecca Farm in July 2012 a success. They collected donations at the gate from event guests to support Halt at Cancer X, a Rebecca Farm initiative to raise money for breast cancer research inspired by the event’s late founder, Rebecca Chaney Broussard.

The FVCC Foundation tours of the Bibler Home and Gardens generated $7,342 to fund the FVCC student scholarship program. The spring tours opened with a Mother’s Day champagne brunch prepared by culinary students. The summer tours kicked off with a special presentation by Carol Bibler, daughter of the late Sam Bibler who founded the Bibler Home and Gardens, on her memories of her father’s love of swans and miniature animals in the gardens.
