These smart labels, also called radio frequency identification (RFID), are predicted to replace the traditional bar code in the near future. Smart labels offer a wide variety of capabilities such as anti-theft, data carrying, item identification, and continuous tracking. RFID technology allows for a remote and indirect line-of-sight interface between the physical and data management environments. These type tags and labels have read/write capabilities. Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) labels are widely used to prevent theft in supermarkets, drug stores, warehouses, and other retail or manufacturing industries. This means that EAS labels do not offer inventory management capabilities and do not contain any identity codes concerning the product in which it is attached. These labels are simply used for security purposes.
