Social Networking
IDENTITY is created by the user to become whomever they desire online
STATUS is built online through expansion of the a social network by adding friends casually and liberally
This addition leads to a further reaching
web providing more SOCIAL
CAPITALWikipedia - Online Identity
Social Capital
With the Democratization of Online Social Networks, more social capital leads to more
POWER
So-called friends are used to give the
user more POWER
Purpose of “Friends”
Friends will exist as WEAK TIES
With increased power from a vast network of friends, networking among weaker connections becomes more common
Weak Ties and Diversity in Social Networks

Networking Amongst “Friends”
Ideas or products are being spread simply and efficiently across social media sites
Automatically done via Twitter, Facebook, or other social media sites
Friends are added or removed selfishly to SATISFY NEEDS of a user
Connectivity
Friends are more commonly less connected
Friendships are built or destroyed with the simple click of a mouse button
Cutting ties to people doesn’t trigger the same emotional difficulty due to lack of contact with individuals
Global Connections
A vast amount of international connections are made
By 2020 a large majority of the world population will own a MOBILE DEVICE
ACCESS to internet and SOCIAL MEDIUMS is more predominant 30
70
Mobile Device Market Penetra-
tion
Extensive Reach
Smaller gaps between friends of different nations are more common
Having several friends in many different countries leads to a
unified global network
Very Loose Ties
Cross continental friends are very weak ties
Still a point of contact for people to become connected should they ever travel
Enhanced Trust
Genuine information can be retrieved through friends willing to share knowledge
Could be considered a more trustworthy source of information than the general public
Knowledge Sharing
Feedback
Feedback from friends ranks higher than strangers
POWER is derived from the collaboration of individuals fuelling each other
It comes in the form of feedback within a couple degrees of separation
Challenges and Implications
In the future, with technology advancing and becoming more convenient will come more privacy and security issues
The public may have good or bad experiences with this
Experiences
People stalking your profile and finding out information about you
Private content will be accessible by the public
Threats or reputation damage can be an issue
http://sdow.semanticweb.org/2008/pub/slides/SDoW2008-slides-Beyond-Walled-Gardens-Open-Standards-for-the-Social-Web/
Experiences
People may be more selective to accepting friend requests
Bad experiences may lead people to shut down accounts
Social networking companies may suffer losses
Experiences
Good experiences may lead to more and more people joining social networking sites
People may have issues in households because of some information they see on the internet
Identity, security
With the ease of access to technology and mobile devices by 2020, security issues will be a top priority for government regulators
Keeping information private will be a thing of the past – all information will be posted for the public to see and it will be very difficult to keep information
Identity, security
People can create fake profiles
There can be serious reputation damage
Identity theft can occur
People may create profiles of someone nonexistent
http://www.allfacebook.com/2008/12/lindsay-lohan-facebook/
Identity, security
People may hack into accounts and display wrong information on your behalf
You may not be able to access your own account
http://www.pc1news.com/news/0325/fake-profiles-on-fakebook-facebook.html
2020…
These few issues will occur and by 2020 we will see many changes on the social networking that exist today
There may be more sites under development and some sites may have to shut down
Hopefully there will be more ways to make the Internet a safer place than it is
…Could be difficult
The challenges we will face in 2020 will be much harder than the ones we face today
Not only will we have to look after OURSELVES but we will have to look after a much YOUNGER AGE group that will be using the internet and social networks
