Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is about to open, in parts: Most of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open on August 29, 2019. This includes the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run simulator ride, Oga’s Cantina lounge, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo quick service, Ronto Roasters meat stall, Milk Stand takeaway bar, Kat Saka’s Kettle popcorn outlet, Savi’s Workshop handmade lightsaber customization experience, Droid Depot assembly experience, and a host of small shops. The second ride, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, is slated for a December 5, 2019 opening.

Neither Smugglers Run nor Rise of the Resistance will offer FastPass+ when they open, though one or both attractions will likely add the service at some point in the future. Fortunately, Oga’s Cantina, Savi’s Workshop, and the Droid Depot will offer reservations. This makes touring the new land much easier as it won’t be necessary to visit any of these locations early in the day to secure spots. Fewer than 50 people are able to build a lightsaber per hour at Savi’s Workshop, and Oga’s Cantina has room for fewer than 250 people. Smugglers Run, on the other hand, should move through about 1,500 riders per hour – a much higher capacity. Touring strategies will change again once Rise of the Resistance opens. Rise is expected to be a much grander ride than Smugglers Run, which means most people will likely head to it first. This may create a situation similar to Pandora at Animal Kingdom, where nearly everyone rides Flight of Passage first, and then visits Na’vi River Journey immediately after. This makes it possible for those who arrive early enough to ride both attractions with relatively short waits first thing in the morning. The fact that FastPass+ will not be offered means standby waits will be shorter as nearly 100% of the ride’s capacity will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Extra, Extra Magic Hours: From September 1 through November 2, 2019, Hollywood Studios will offer morning Extra Magic Hours exclusively to those who are eligible from 6am to 9am. Smugglers Run and the rest of Galaxy’s Edge will be open, in addition to the Toy Story Land attractions and select others that have yet to be announced. Eligible guests able to arrive by 5:30am should find a tremendous amount of success in the early hours as relatively few people will be able to arrive that early to take advantage of the extra time. Guests will be able to quickly head to Smugglers Run, ride, and then enjoy the land before moving on to Toy Story Land for Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Toy Story Mania.

For those ineligible or unable to arrive early, the late night should be the least crowded time to visit Galaxy’s Edge with the best time to get in line for Smugglers Run just a few minutes before the park is scheduled to close. In Pandora, Flight of Passage routinely posts a three-hour wait in the afternoon, with the wait to ride typically around 45 minutes for those who get in line at the end of the night.

We also don’t know what the Extra Magic Hours schedule will look like after November 2. The 6am EMH is so early that it should be relatively easy sailing for those able to arrive that early, even if initial demand is high. It’s likely that Disney will drastically reduce the number of Extra Magic Hours beginning in early November. With later openings, more people will be waiting for the park to open, and crowding will be a greater issue. We’ll see what happens and adjust our touring strategies as things change.

Page 3: Future Home of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (Opening August 29, 2019) · Outpost store to the right of 50’s Prime Time Café before 10:30am. With Toy Story Land drawing heavy crowds,

For now, those eligible for the Extra, Extra Magic Hours should plan to do everything they can to take advantage of them. Those unable or ineligible for the early arrival should plan on staying in Galaxy’s Edge through park close, getting in line for Smugglers Run at the end of the night. Once Rise of the Resistance opens, we’ll need to reassess things again, but it’s likely that starting the day with Rise and then hurrying to Smugglers Run will be an efficient strategy. Riding Smugglers Run and then Rise of the Resistance late at night should also prove viable.

FastPass+ changes coming August 29: With the opening of Galaxy’s Edge, we will also see new FastPass+ Tiers. Here’s the expected priority from highest to lowest when that happens:

Tier 1 (Choose One):

1. Slinky Dog Dash 2. Tower of Terror 3. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster 4. Toy Story Mania 5. Alien Swirling Saucers

Tier 2 (Choose Two):

1. Star Tours 2. Frozen Sing-Along 3. Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage 4. Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular 5. Disney Junior Dance Party 6. Voyage of the Little Mermaid 7. Fantasmic 8. Muppet Vision 3D

Guests may initially select in advance only one attraction from Tier 1, which includes all five of the most popular rides in the park outside of Galaxy’s Edge. This will complicate touring quite a bit, as previously guests were able to book in advance one of the Toy Story Land rides, like Slinky Dog Dash, in addition to both Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror. Now, only one of these high-priority attractions may be selected.

One potential piece of good news is that everyone else is in the same boat and day-of FastPass+ availability will likely be better for priority attractions. At Epcot, the Tier system makes it easier to secure Tier 1 attractions as 4th FastPass+ selections because guests may only select one attraction in advance from Tier 1, which includes Frozen Ever After, IllumiNations, Soarin’, and Test Track. If people were able to select two or three of these in advance, then there would be far less availability as most people would pick three priority experiences from the available inventory. With most guests at the Studios selecting one of the first three rides from Tier 1 in advance, there will likely be more availability for Toy Story Mania and Alien Swirling Saucers, along with the others, later in the day.

This cheat sheet will be updated a week or so after Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens and we know more about what to expect. Until then, check out the legacy advice below for some ideas on how things typically go at the Studios.

Page 4: Future Home of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (Opening August 29, 2019) · Outpost store to the right of 50’s Prime Time Café before 10:30am. With Toy Story Land drawing heavy crowds,

General Touring Philosophy: Before Galaxy’s Edge opens on August 29th, 2019, most guests arriving prior to park opening will want to begin their day in Toy Story Land with Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Toy Story Mania. FastPass+ can then be utilized at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror. Thrill seekers may elect to begin the day at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, where it’s possible to ride in standby a couple of times there and at Tower of Terror. Then use FastPass+ at a Toy Story Land attraction later in the day. Starting with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is also less stressful than Slinky Dog because far fewer people are headed in that direction. A typical problem is trying to see all of the scheduled shows, most of which take 40 to 60 minutes to experience, in a single day. With one day, you may need to prioritize several of the lengthy shows that appeal to your group while skipping others – there just isn’t enough time.

Characters: The Woody meet in Toy Story Land is the highest priority with a 30+ minute wait that develops almost instantaneously after they appear at park open. Try to visit immediately after riding Slinky Dog Dash in the morning or as late in the evening as possible. Other characters in Toy Story Land see 20ish minute waits. Mickey and Minnie meet across from Sci-Fi Dine-In to 25 to 40 minutes waits. Mike and Sulley inside Walt Disney Presents are the next priority with 30-minute waits almost all day. Visit them in the last half hour that they’re scheduled to appear, which is usually 6pm. The Star Wars characters in the Launch Bay typically see 20- to 30-minute waits. Visit during the heat of the day as both are inside with air-conditioned queues. Other priorities include the Disney Junior characters like Doc McStuffins and Fancy Nancy outside Disney Junior, and Olaf sees 10 to 20 minute waits across from Star Tours.

Jedi Training Academy: Kids between the ages of 4 and 12 have the opportunity to participate in this show held next to Star Tours. To sign them up, bring the participating child to the Adventurers Outpost store to the right of 50’s Prime Time Café before 10:30am. With Toy Story Land drawing heavy crowds, few people head to signups first thing, making it easier to head over later in the day. If Jedi Training is an absolute must-do, consider visiting first thing after to guarantee spots. There are usually 12 to 15 shows scheduled throughout the day. Ask for a show in the late morning or afternoon so it doesn’t interfere with morning touring and double check the weather as rain cancels shows. Kids participating in Jedi Training are required to return to the sign-up location 30 minutes before the show to practice. Those with pre-opening reservations at the Hollywood & Vine character breakfast may be able to sign their kids up before the meal without a wait, which is an added perk.

Rope Drop: The Studios typically lets guests into the park 30-75 minutes prior to open, depending on crowds, with holding areas just inside the entrance and at the end of Hollywood Boulevard. For Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster or Tower of Terror, keep to the far right. For Toy Story Land, stay center and prepare to head straight and then to the right around Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Cast will slowly walk guests towards Toy Story Land and down Sunset Boulevard about ten minutes before official open.

An alternate, rarer rope drop procedure is also sometimes used, when guests are held outside the park until 10-20 minutes before official open. After guests enter the park, they are allowed to head to the attraction of their choice without being held on Hollywood Boulevard.

Whichever way it goes, those visiting Slinky Dog Dash first should arrive one hour before official open and be prepared to hurry to the attraction. Those heading anywhere else, including Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster or Toy Story Mania, may arrive closer to 30 minutes before open and be just fine.

FastPass+ at the Studios through August 28

Attractions at Hollywood Studios are broken up into two tiers, with the three Toy Story Land rides comprising Tier 1 and all other attractions comprising Tier 2. Only one Toy Story Land attraction may be selected in advance and Slinky Dog Dash is the clear priority with the longest waits and lowest FastPass+ availability of the three rides. Alien Swirling Saucers FastPass+ are also available in far lower quantities than Toy Story Mania, making it the second priority.

FastPass+ Priority from Highest to Lowest

Toy Story Land (Choose One):

1. Slinky Dog Dash 2. Alien Swirling Saucers 3. Toy Story Mania

Everything Else (Choose Two):

1. Tower of Terror 2. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster 3. Star Tours 4. Frozen Sing-Along 5. Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage 6. Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular 7. Disney Junior Dance Party 8. Voyage of the Little Mermaid 9. Fantasmic 10. Muppet Vision 3D

Tower of Terror is the highest Tier 2 FastPass+ priority during the ride’s refurbishment, where one elevator shaft is currently closed, halving capacity. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is a close second. Waits at Star Tours average 30 minutes, making it a good 4th FP+ selection. FastPass+ saves less time at the shows, where any benefit from using FP+ requires an arrival early enough that there should be plenty of seats to see the show in standby. Still, FastPass+ does guarantee a seat, which can make an arrival closer to show time work as long as an off-center seat is okay. Frozen Sing-Along is prioritized highest because shows are most likely to fill to capacity and FastPass+ availability is lower. Most guests will benefit more from selecting one of the six rides, when 60+ minutes in line can be saved by using FastPass+.

4th FastPass+ Availability: The Toy Story Land rides, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and Tower of Terror will either have limited or no availability come 12pm. Using a 4th FP+ at Star Tours makes the most sense, but standby waits are reliably short before 10:30am or after 6:30pm most days anyway. Refresh availability for specific show times as people constantly change plans, opening up experiences. If you’re planning on seeing Fantasmic, keep checking for FastPass+ throughout the late evening even if it isn’t initially available. Others cancelling should open up availability.

Experience those two rides and then use the Slinky Dog FP+ if the return time is early enough or return to the land later in the day.

LATE-ARRIVAL TOURING: Use FastPass+ at a Toy Story Land attraction and for two of the attractions from Tier 2 that you would like to experience. Most people will want to select Slinky Dog Dash in advance along with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror when available. Visit the anytime attractions in the afternoon when crowds are heaviest, prioritizing the shows that run on a set schedule. Visit characters in the last 60 to 90 minutes they’re scheduled to appear. End the evening with Fantasmic or the Star Wars Fireworks or visit Toy Story Mania, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Slinky Dog Dash (in that order) in the final 90 minutes of park operation when waits are shorter. Disney allows guests to enter the queue of any operating ride up to a minute before the parks’ posted closing time. Slinky Dog may still post a 40+ minute wait at the end of the night, but actual waits are routinely under a half hour.

Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away: This show, which takes place on a stage in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater, is typically scheduled at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm, 5:30pm. The first show may be scheduled at 11:30am, in which case a show will be scheduled at 6:30pm. To see it, arrive about 15 minutes before show time and find a spot further back on the far left or right hand sides of the stage. Because the stage is low to the ground, it’s difficult to see over people’s heads from the center. For front row spots, arrive 30 minutes early.

FANTASMIC: Hollywood Studios’ longtime nighttime spectacular is scheduled at least once almost every night. During extremely busy times, a second show is scheduled 90 minutes after the start of the first. Shows can start as early as 6:30pm or as late as 10pm. If two shows are scheduled, the second will virtually always be less crowded, especially if it begins at 9pm or later, due to the number of families that opt for the earlier show. If you’re headed to the first or only Fantasmic, plan to arrive 60 to 75 minutes early to secure good seats together or use FP+ and arrive closer to 40 minutes early. For the second show, an arrival 20 minutes early should suffice. Seating is bleacher-style, uncomfortable, and without backs. The best seats are at least half way up as close to the middle as possible. The Fantasmic Dining Package, a fixed price meal at Hollywood Brown Derby, Hollywood & Vine, or Mama Melrose, guarantees a seat for the show along with the meal or full buffet. A Dessert Package with reserved seating is also available. Reserved seating for both is front and center and those using it should arrive at least 20 minutes before show time. FastPass+ has a reserved section next to the Dining Package section. Because the show is so late at night, most guests will want to use their pre-scheduled selections elsewhere and check to see if the show is available as an additional FastPass+ selection later in the day. While Fantasmic FastPass+ may not initially be available, there are thousands of spots available and people consistently cancel. Keep refreshing the app and Fantasmic should show up sooner or later.

STAR WARS FIREWORKS: What is now predominantly a projection show on the façade of the Chinese Theater with accompanying fireworks is usually scheduled once per night shortly after sundown. Guests wishing to see the fireworks, which are almost exclusively shot off on the right side of the building, will need to arrive at least 35 minutes prior to the start of the show and position themselves in the Center Stage area about half way between the Chinese Theater and the

Page 9: Future Home of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (Opening August 29, 2019) · Outpost store to the right of 50’s Prime Time Café before 10:30am. With Toy Story Land drawing heavy crowds,

two tall projection towers near the end of Hollywood Boulevard. There’s typically room to fill in this area. This is the ideal location for both the fireworks and projection shows.

WONDERFUL WORLD OF ANIMATION: Similar to the Disney Movie Magic show that preceded it, this 12-minute projection show features scenes from all of Disney and Pixar’s animated movies from the last 90 years projected on the Chinese Theater with a few fireworks at the end. It’s typically scheduled 20 to 30 minutes before the Star Wars fireworks and does a nice job of occupying viewers’ attention until the main event begins.

FANTASMIC AND STAR WARS FIREWORKS ON THE SAME NIGHT: With the way the two nighttime shows are usually scheduled, it will be difficult or impossible to see both if only one Fantasmic is scheduled. Disney typically schedules the Star Wars Fireworks 15 or 30 minutes after the first Fantasmic. If it’s 15 minutes, that makes it impossible to see both. If it’s 30 minutes, you’ll have to quickly exit Fantasmic and try to find spots as close to the recommended viewing area as possible. With two Fantasmic shows, see the Star Wars Fireworks first followed by the second Fantasmic.

JINGLE BELL, JINGLE BAM: Disney typically offers a holiday-inspired projection show with accompanying fireworks in place of the Star Wars show from the first week in November through the first week in January. The advice on seeing the show is the same as for Star Wars.
