Today, we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday, where we reflect on Jesus’ care and love of us. Your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show that you are indeed the disciples of Jesus as it will bring your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

RCIA News—Mystagogy Easter Vigil was joyous!

Alex and Olivia received the sacraments of initiation and are now full members of the Catholic Church. Thank you to everyone who cele-brated along with us, either in person or via livestream.

During the Season of Easter, the 50 days from Easter to Pentecost, Alex and Olivia, along with their sponsors and catechists con-tinue to gather. This period is known as Mystagogy, and as the word implies, is about the ‘mysteries’ of our faith. Our focus is on living the Paschal Mystery, the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This is one of my favorite times of the RCIA process since we are encouraged to discuss things like ‘Living the Beatitudes’ and ‘Catholic Social Teaching’. The con-versation can get quite lively! Living as disciples of Christ was radical 2000 years ago and remains so today.

As a group, we are experiencing a tran-sition from Zoom to in-person gatherings. It certainly seems like conversations flow

much easier. I am grateful that the Old Church is available to us.

The picture shows Alex and Olivia with their sponsors. From left to right, Ashley Gjerswold (Alex’s sponsor), Alex Hows, Olivia Farnsworth, and Nancy Bowen-Hicks (Olivia’s sponsor). Thank you to Ashley and Nancy for their guidance and support this year.

Please keep us all in your prayers as we continue to learn together what it means to be the Body of Christ.

Celebrate mothers in May!Upload mother & child photos to www.themadeleine.edu/mothers

A May tra-dition at The Madeleine: cel-ebrating the Month of Mary and Mother’s Day in a special way!

Each week-end beginning May 2, we will show a slide-show of mothers and children sent in from The Madeleine Community. The photos will show both in the church at 10:00 am Sunday Mass and on our livestream.

We are starting over—all new photos! This year, we’re making a fresh start, a

blank canvas. So even if you’ve sent us a photo before, please send a new one this year.

Submissions can be either a photo of

mother and child (children), or a photo of mothers and their mothers. Please send us just one photo of a mother/child combo as we want to have time to show all our photos.

Please send photos by April 29Upload your photos to our website at

www.themadeleine.edu/mothers. If you have only a photo print, bring it to the Parish Office during work hours (label it with your name and phone). We will scan it and leave it for you to pick up.

Help us to honor all mothers and those from our community, as well as Mary, the Mother of God, in this very special way!

This is My Father’s WorldThis Sunday is called, “Good Shepherd

Sunday”—and is a liturgical back-drop for World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Because of its importance, the Church has des-ignated this as an intentional time to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. With Jesus as the model, our “Good Shepherds” are our priests.

So while our usual image of Jesus the Good Shepherd usually involves look-ing for that one lost sheep (something our priests do on a regular basis), this week Jesus takes it a step further—say-ing that the Good Shepherd also protects the flock from wolves, even if that means laying down his life to do so. In other words, at the same time our beloved Good Shepherds are looking around for the lost, they are still trying to welcome, love and cherish those left in the flock! I should mention that those of us who are not ordained and lead a ministry are con-sidered “miniature” versions of the Good Shepherd—that nonetheless work to bring the “lost” sheep back to our own minis-tries, and provide spiritual nourishment and community to those within our fold.

This week we also celebrate Earth Day. While many Catholics inadvertently as-sociate Earth Day with Pope Francis’s encyclical, Laudato Si’, Earth Day was actually begun by a US Senator in 1970 to raise environmental awareness in the United States. In the past 50 years, Earth Day has grown from 20 million to over

a billion people who participate in envi-ronmental causes throughout the world

on this particular day—now con-sidered the largest secular civic event in the world.

Inspired by Pope Francis, Earth Day takes on a different meaning to us as Catholics; a day to celebrate God’s creation and an awareness that it is our responsibil-ity to preserve it. One of the most

sublime hymns that depict God’s creation is Maltbie Davenport Babcock’s “This is My Father’s World.” Babcock wrote the poem describing his frequent nature walks, telling his wife he was “going out to see the Father’s world.” His poem, which references scriptures from the books of Genesis, Kings and the Psalms, was set to music by Franklin Sheppard in 1915—the music adapted from a tradi-tional English melody Sheppard learned as a child. The tune name “Terra Beata” means “blessed earth” in Latin—and serves as a reminder that we are blessed indeed to be living in our Father’s world!

This is my Father’s world.O let me ne’er forget

That though the wrong seems oft so strong,

God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world:

why should my heart be sad?The Lord is King; let the heavens ring!

God reigns; let the earth be glad!

—Maria Manzo

▸ Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead.

▸ Keep our parish priests and deacons in prayer throughout the week.

▸ Encourage your children or grandchil-dren to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister.

▸ Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.

No daily Mass May 5-7With Father Mike away at an upcoming

Priests’ convocation, there will be no Daily Mass at The Madeleine May 5–7.

Recycle your Teva Sandals!

Your Teva sandals and flip flops have a soul of their own, and when they’re well-worn and ready to retire, bring them to the parish (in the breezeway on 23rd Avenue) where—in partnership with Terracycle—we will ensure they are recycled and reborn into new things. The only caveats: Teva brand only, no shoes or boots, and please remove as much mud, dirt, and debris as you can. In honor of Earth Day, let’s give new life to our old and tired friends.

Help beautify our city … one block at a time

Adopt One Block is a local nonprofit en-couraging local residents to adopt and care for our environment one block at a time. Participants choose a location and commit to weekly walking the public portion of the block, picking up litter and debris, and properly recycling or disposing of the trash. Anyone, any age, can participate (when and how you do this is your choice). Here’s how to become a Block Ambassador: ▸ Select a block anywhere in the local area you would like to adopt.

▸ Submit the block to the organizer at www.adoptoneblock.org

▸ Request collection supplies you may need ▸ – trash grabber, gloves, trash bag. ▸ Begin weekly walks of your adopted block.

▸ Let us know what block you have adopted, and share your stories and photos with us at [email protected] with subject line “Adopt One Block.”

▸ Spread the word with friends and fam-ily about how they can become Block Ambassadors too.Questions: Darlene Maurer, dmaurer@

PARISH LIFE

Nanette KullbergA Funeral Mass was celebrated for

parishioner Nanette Kullberg last week at The Madeleine.

Nanette Theresa Kullberg was born July 22, 1932 in Huron, South Dakota. She passed away April 17, 2021 after a brief but brave battle with lymphoma.

If there’s a single word to describe Nan, it would be “beloved.” Everyone who knew her was drawn to her warmth, charm, happy disposition, intellect and humor. This was especially true of her family: her husband of 65 years, Don; her seven children, Kathy, Michael, David, Cindy, John, Tracy and Jim; and her many adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren. After growing up in South Dakota with her parents and two older sisters, Nan’s family moved to Portland, where she attended the University of Portland. There she met the love of her life, Don Kullberg, two years (and one foot) her senior. After her graduation the two were married in 1956. They moved to NE Portland, The Madeleine Parish, and have lived togeth-er in the same home for over 50 years, which is still the center of family activity.

That Nan’s life was filled with family is no surprise with seven children and the eventual herd of grandchildren and great grands. She was the family’s heart and soul. Holidays celebrated at home were large and boisterous. She was a fabulous cook. Famous among the grandchildren for her “cheesy eggs” (which, ironical-ly, contained no cheese). “Friday night soup” and cocktails with the grown “kids” which became a long-time tradi-tion. Gatherings to cheer the Seahawks,

Trailblazers and U of O football. (She could yell with the best of them.)

Her other joys included: bridge club, bowling league, beach trips with the girlfriends, and volunteering at The Madeleine. Travel with her dear Don and their friends, trips to Reno, annual stays in Hawaii, winter escapes to La Quinta, a lifetime trip to Paris. Rockaway Beach, a decades-long favorite, became a sec-ond home and another favored gathering place for the generations.

Nan’s faith was her core, and helped her through this difficult year of more limited time with family. Her 5’2” height belied the size of her heart. She was an unbounded fount of love. As the num-ber of her descendants kept growing, the love and kindness she had for each and every one of them somehow managed to keep growing too. All of them held a very special place in Nan’s heart. And she in all of theirs..

Please pray for Nan, her family and all the faithfully departed from The Madeleine

This week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory be-cause they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayer-fully consider how you can support this appeal.

More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions

About our collectionAs you know, we are trying to avoid sec-

ond collections at The Madeleine. If you added an amount for Second Collections to your stewardship pledge, we thank you. If you did not add an amount, please take an envelope, include a thoughtful amount, and put it in the regular collection basket in the vestibule. You can also make an do-nation at www.themadeleine.edu/parishgiving If you do, be sure to note “Catholic Home Missions” on the form as your target for the second collection.

If you like to sing and would like to learn more about music, then sign up to join our Virtual Youth Music Enrichment ministry!

Although we are not able to sing together yet, there are things that we can do virtually to learn about music and to sing “together.” Each 30-minute rehearsal will focus on learn-ing how to read music, followed by some virtual singing. We hope to be able to put a virtual choir together in the near future.

If you have any questions or would like to participate in this program, please contact Dr. Manzo directly at [email protected]. Rehearsals have already started, but it is not too late to join!

BULLETIN

World Day of Prayer for VocationsWorld Day of Prayer for Vocations will be observed on Sunday, April 25, 2021 also known as "Good Shepherd Sunday." The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal 2021Your support of the Catholic Home Missions Appeal strengthens the Church At Home. Over 40% of dioceses United States and its territories are considered mission territories, because they are unable to fund essential pastoral activities needed in their communities. Your support funds religious education, seminary formation, lay ministry training, and other programs that build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Prayerfully consider supporting the collection at this weekend! More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.
