There are several good introductions to the modern history of Central and Eastern Europe, among them Joseph Held's Columbia History and Nigel and Geoffrey Swain's Eastern Europe since 1945. George Schopftin, another contributor to this volume, has recently published Politics in Eastern Europe, covering the period from 1945 to 1992. Joseph Rothschild's Return to Diversity considers the whole post-war period, as does Misha Glenny's more popular Rebirth of History. On the transition from communist rule J .F. Brown's Surge to Freedom and David Mason's Revolution in East-Central Europe are particularly helpful. Judy Batt's East Central Europe from Reform to Transformation emphasises the politics and economics of the transition; Ralf Dahrendorfs Reflections on the Revolution in Europe is a thoughtful meditation on the changes and the meaning of 'Europe' in this connection.

A detailed reference guide to the changes of 1989 and 1990 is available in Stephen White's edited Handbook of Reconstruction in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union; briefer summary volumes are Roger East's Revolutions in Eastern Europe and Keith Sword's Times Guide to Eastern Europe. Ray Taras's edited Handbook of Political Science Research on the USSR and Eastern Europe provides a comprehensive bibliographical survey with its emphasis on the communist period. Timothy Garton Ash's We the People is a more impressionistic journalist's account, emphasising developments in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary; the same author's Uses of Adversity contains a series of reflective essays on the region as a whole.

end of the communist period appeared in the 'Marxist regimes' series published under the general editorship of Bogdan Szajkowski. These included books by Hans-Georg Heinrich on Hungary, George Kolankiewicz and Paul Lewis on Poland, Robert Mcintyre on Bulgaria, Bruce McFarlane on Yugoslavia and Michael Shafir on Romania. Sharon Wolchik's planned contribution appeared after the demise of 'Marxist regimes' and was entitled Czechoslovakia in Transition, with useful details of the early states of postcommunist politics in what later became two separate states.

Analogous studies of changes in Poland are George Sanford's edited work Democratization in Poland, 1988-90 and George Blazyca and Ryszard Rapacki's Poland into the 1990s. Nigel Swain offers a general view of Hungarian developments in Hungary: the Rise and Fall of Feasible Socialism, while a more theoretical study is that by Agnes Horvath and Arpad Szakolczai on The Dissolution of Communist Power. More detailed political perspectives can be found in Bozoki, Korosenyi and Scht>pftin's Post-Communist Transition: Emerging Pluralism in Hungary. Misha Glenny and Branka Magas have provided useful accounts of the 'former Yugoslavia', and Martin Rady a study of Romania in Turmoil.

Book-length studies of particular themes have, under the confusing and fast-moving conditions of postcommunist Eastern Europe, been slower to appear. On privatisation there is a recent study by Roman Frydman and others, The Privatization Process in Central Europe; Chris Corrin and others deal with Superwomen and the Double Burden; Bob Deacon and others consider changes in social policy in The New Eastern Europe; and other issues are examined in Paul Lewis's edited Civil Society and Democracy in Eastern Europe. Contemporary regional relations and international affairs are considered in Andrew Michta and Dya Prizel's edited volume Postcommunist Eastern Europe: Crisis and Reform.

In a rapidly changing situation, developments and changing theoretical perspectives must be followed through the scholarly and more popular literature. There are several periodicals that deal specifically with Eastern and Central Europe, among them East European Politics and Societies, East European Quarterly, Slavic Review, Europe-Asia Studies (formerly Soviet Studies), the Journal of Communist Studies, and Studies in Comparative Communism (from 1993, Communist and Post-Communist Studies). More general politics periodicals often carry articles with an East European focus, among them the British Journal of Political Science, Parliamentary

Affairs, the World Policy Journal and World Politics. East European Reporter, now appearing bimonthly, carries a range

of articles on regional themes and reprints some interesting pieces from the East European press. Among several news and monitoring services, the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Research Report is particularly valuable; it is published on a weekly basis and is also available on-line.
