Rhodes University BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) INFORMATION ABOUT APPLYING TO RHODES Do you qualify? Rhodes admission requirements In order to be accepted for the BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) you must get a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Bachelor’s pass. To get a Bachelor’s pass, you must: Pass at least 4 subjects at 50% or more Pass your language of learning at 30% or more Pass 2 other subjects at 33.3% or more In addition, Rhodes sets a further entrance requirement. You must get an Admission Point Score (APS) of 40. If you have an APS of between 32 and 39 your application will still be considered. How to work out your admission point score: Rhodes does not consider your Life Orientation mark. So you must look at the percentages you get in your final NSC examinations for your other 6 subjects (marks below 40% are not counted). You turn the percentage into a mark out of ten. So, for example, if you got 77% for isiXhosa, it will count as 7.7 APS points. Then add up your marks as shown in the following example: Percentage for NCS examinations APS points IsiXhosa Home Language 77% 7.7 English First Additional Language 65% 6.5 Mathematics Literacy 55% 5.5 Life Sciences 60% 6.0 Geography 58% 5.8 History 50% 5.0 36.5 This student does not have 40 points, but because their APS score falls between 32 and 39, their application would be considered. However, this does not necessarily mean that they would be accepted. If you have not yet taken your NSC examinations, it would be a good idea for you to work out your APS score using your June examination marks. This will help you to see whether you are likely to qualify. If you wrote matric prior to 2008, you can send your certificate to Rhodes and we will work out your APS for you. How much does it cost to study for a BEd at Rhodes? Fees for 2016 have not yet been set. Tuition fees for 2015 were R37,152 and residence fees, which include meals, ranged from R48,100 to R50,000. There is likely to be a 10% increase in the residence fees in 2016. You can reduce the cost of residence fees by applying to share a room. There are a limited number of shared rooms and students are selected by means of a lottery. A limited number of Funza Lushaka bursaries are available (32 were awarded to Rhodes BEd students in 2015). You can also apply for a student loan (NSFAS).

    INFORMATION ABOUT APPLYING TO RHODES

    Do you qualify?

Rhodes admission requirements In order to be accepted for the BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) you must get a National Senior Certificate

(NSC) with a Bachelors pass. To get a Bachelors pass, you must:

Pass at least 4 subjects at 50% or more

Pass your language of learning at 30% or more

Pass 2 other subjects at 33.3% or more

In addition, Rhodes sets a further entrance requirement. You must get an Admission Point Score (APS) of

    40. If you have an APS of between 32 and 39 your application will still be considered.

How to work out your admission point score: Rhodes does not consider your Life Orientation mark. So you must look at the percentages you get in your

final NSC examinations for your other 6 subjects (marks below 40% are not counted). You turn the

percentage into a mark out of ten. So, for example, if you got 77% for isiXhosa, it will count as 7.7 APS

points. Then add up your marks as shown in the following example:

    Percentage for NCS examinations

    APS points

    IsiXhosa Home Language 77% 7.7

English First Additional Language 65% 6.5

    Mathematics Literacy 55% 5.5

    Life Sciences 60% 6.0

    Geography 58% 5.8

    History 50% 5.0

    36.5

This student does not have 40 points, but because their APS score falls between 32 and 39, their application

would be considered. However, this does not necessarily mean that they would be accepted.

If you have not yet taken your NSC examinations, it would be a good idea for you to work out your APS

score using your June examination marks. This will help you to see whether you are likely to qualify.

If you wrote matric prior to 2008, you can send your certificate to Rhodes and we will work out your APS

    for you.

How much does it cost to study for a BEd at Rhodes? Fees for 2016 have not yet been set. Tuition fees for 2015 were R37,152 and residence fees, which include

meals, ranged from R48,100 to R50,000. There is likely to be a 10% increase in the residence fees in 2016.

You can reduce the cost of residence fees by applying to share a room. There are a limited number of

shared rooms and students are selected by means of a lottery.

A limited number of Funza Lushaka bursaries are available (32 were awarded to Rhodes BEd students in

2015). You can also apply for a student loan (NSFAS).

  • Do you qualify for a Funza Lushaka bursary?

In 2015 the Funza Lushaka bursary was worth R75,000 per year.

    To get a bursary:

You must be accepted by Rhodes University

You must have a pass in Mathematics or Maths Literacy

You must have at least a Level 4 pass in Home Language

Funza Lushaka bursaries are awarded on merit. The university will select students on the basis of their marks and the quality of their applications. If you are awarded a Funza Lushaka bursary for 2016, you will reapply for the following years of the BEd programme. The continuance of your bursary will depend on your performance.

Do you qualify for a NSFAS loan? Funza Lushaka bursaries do not cover the full cost of studying at Rhodes. We therefore recommend that you also apply for a NSFAS loan. You should indicate on page 6 of your application that you wish to be sent an application form for financial assistance. NSFAS loans are awarded on the basis of a students economic need. You are therefore also required to provide information about your parent or guardians income. If the university decides to offer you a place and you have requested financial aid, the Registrar will then send you a financial aid form to complete.

Number of places on the course Rhodes will be admitting 45 students to the BEd (Foundation Phase Teaching) in 2016. If more than 45 students apply, the university will choose the best students on the basis of their marks and their completed application forms.

Your application Before applying make sure that your marks for your June examination (or your final NSC examination, if you have already passed) qualify you to do so. Spend time on completing the application forms because the university will look at these carefully when considering your application. Check through your application and make sure that you have provided all the information and that you and your parent or guardian have signed the application. If there is missing information or signatures, this will delay the processing of your application. You will be charged a non-refundable application fee of R100.
