FUNDRAISING & TECHNOLOGY
Or as a Facebook friend called it:"Facebook, Twitter & My Space: How to hit up friends for money"
I’m still trying to figure out if she was serious…
About me… Raised $$ for Delaware
Symphony Orchestra (1995 – 1998) and Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra (1998 – 2001)
At NPCC since 2001 (I moved to NYC after 9/11), and have been the point person for membership since then.
About you… Your name Your title Your organization name (if appropriate) 3 words that describe your organization (or you if
no organization affiliation yet.)
Why only 3 words? Helps de-clutter your thoughts about what your
organization accomplishes Gets rid of jargon Audience gets a clear picture of your organization Similar to the elevator pitch…
(not completely of course, but this is a great exercise for any development professional to do)
What problem are you trying
to solve?&
Show a value proposition

“A good elevator pitch is made up of two key elements:”
To find it: Google “elevator pitch”
No matter the communication vehicle, you should keep those
elements in mind…especially in today’s society
POLL
How many of you would donate to NPCC right now?
…or to any of the Nonprofits represented
here tonight?
Why?Or
Why not?
I’ve been taught that
It’s the personal connection
QUESTION:
Why do people
give?
1. Someone I know asked me to give, and I wanted to help them 2. I felt emotionally moved by someone's story 3. I want to feel I'm not powerless in the face of need and can help (this is
especially true during disasters) 4. I want to feel I'm changing someone's life 5. I feel a sense of closeness to a community or group 6. I need a tax deduction 7. I want to memorialize someone (who is struggling or died of a disease, for
example) 8. I was raised to give to charity - it's tradition in my family 9. I want to have a good image for myself/my company 10. I want to leave a legacy that perpetuates me, my ideals or my cause 11. I feel fortunate (or guilty) and want to give something back to others 12. I give for religious reasons - God wants me to share my affluence 13. I want to be seen as a leader/role model 14. I want to be "hip," and supporting this charity (i.e., wearing a yellow wrist
band) is in style 15. It makes me feel connected to other people and builds my social network

Remember:
Fundraising is about relationships Not about technology
Fundraising is a part of Marketing &
Marketing is a part of Fundraising
Technology is a tool to help achieve your goals.
What do we want to do? (Your mission)
How can we do that? (Using Technology)
YOUR MISSION SHOULD ALWAYS
COME FIRST
Use technology to save on costs so you don’t have to
raise as much $$! Conference calling instead of meeting in person Email instead of mail Scanning, databases, faxing, etc. Databases! What else?

SOCIAL MEDIA
POLL
How many of you use:For personal or for your org?•Facebook? •Twitter? •MySpace?•Blogs?•Slideshare?•LinkedIn?
Reasons to use Social Media:1. You need to be where your target audiences are. Consider it like an
interactive 24-hour news cycle. 2. It’s a cheap and easy way to connect with your current supporters and
engage new ones.3. The Web 2.0 world is an active hub filled with influentials. If you engage
influentials right, they can help your organization spread your message, introduce new people to your organization and blog about it. Also, major news networks and reporters are using online social networks to get interesting story ideas and generate new sources and leads.
4. Find out what people are saying about your organization. Too often, nonprofits don’t step out into the real world to learn how their supporters and the general public really feel about the organization’s mission and latest initiatives.
5. The Web 2.0 world is not going away anytime soon, so don’t fight it. Join it and take advantage of another avenue to reach your organization’s supporters. From http://www.frogloop.com/web2.0

Social Media can enhance your efforts• Twitter, Facebook, etc. are good for
communications, but we are all still learning how these tools can enhance our revenues.
• They will not replace any fundraising strategies, but will supplement them.
