TRANSCRIPT
Funding opportunities in this newsletter are listed chronologically, starting with the earliest deadline. To allow easy navigation, funding opportunities are colour-coded by discipline according to the key below. Where possible, each opportunity lists the funder, the title, some detail on the scope of the opportunity, the value of the award, and the closing date for applications.
Highlight Opportunities The US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership Call in Agriculture 2018 was launched on 7 June, with very tight deadlines (mostly end June) for submission of proposals to DAERA. This opportunity was immediately highlighted to relevant staff by Research Development and Business Alliance. If you require assistance with proposals, please be in touch.
National Round Table Consultation Survey HSCNI would like to know your opinion about priorities in the area of health services and systems that should be tackled by research. The aim is to use these as inputs into a research agenda for research funding bodies at national and European level, to identify key research questions that are tailored to the
needs of stakeholders within Europe and in other regions. They have designed a survey to capture opinions on this, and invite responses from researchers, among other people. Survey closes Friday 29 June.
New fund to support ground-breaking open research Wellcome Trust has launched a new annual fund to support innovative approaches that enable data, code or other research outputs to be discovered, accessed and reused. The Open Research Fund will allow researchers from any discipline to experiment at the cutting edge of open research and evaluate the benefits and risks of their approach. The awards (£50,000) are for new activities or to develop existing activities, and are open to individuals/teams globally. The 2018 deadline is 7 August.
The second round of UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships will have a deadline for submission of the mandatory Expression of Interest of 4 October 2018; as was the case for Round 1, a MHLS
managed bid process will be implemented. Details can be found in the Fellowships section.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES NEWSLETTER – FACULTY OF MEDICINE, HEALTH AND LIFE SCIENCES

The MRC P2D Postdoctoral Industrial Placement Fund (PIP) aims to support greater
understanding of industry research amongst postdoctoral researchers. Applications to this
scheme are only permitted for activity that is aligned to MRC science areas. Whilst
applications involving existing university collaborative partners are welcome, these will
need to demonstrate why funding is required to further develop the relationship. You are
eligible to apply if you are a member of Queen’s health sciences research staff. It is expected that costs would not exceed £2,000
per applicant. This is an open call, and applications will be reviewed on an ad-hoc basis, but should be submitted at least one
month in advance of the planned travel. For further information and application guidance please contact Dr. Marie-Louise
Cairns.
Internal Funding Opportunities The Research Grant Enabler Fund supports the development and
competitiveness of research funding applications to a major
funder - Research Council or other strategically important UK-
based funding sources. Available to QUB academic or research
staff, applicants can avail of up to £3,000 per year. Guidance notes
and application forms are available here.
Queen’s University Academic Staff Conference Fund provides
funding for academic members of staff travelling to international
conferences to deliver oral presentations. Application form is

The Impact Case Study Fund is intended to support the
development and evidencing of engagement and impact in order
to optimise impact case studies for return to the next REF
exercise. Guidance and application forms are available.
Internal support for EU funding applications
Our EU Networking Fund can cover costs to attend or organise
partner meetings.
Our Support fund for Coordinators can cover the costs of an
internal application manager.
Leveraged Studentship Scheme
The aim of the Leveraged Studentship Scheme is to drive a
change in the structure of our research income portfolio and, in
particular, to support our research leaders, large-scale, strategic
applications and PhD student cohorts. The policy for consideration
for a leveraged studentship has changed recently. Allocations of
studentships will only be made for –
1) Institutional bids e.g. single, managed bids of significant size and scale.
2) A limited range of prestigious funded Fellowships (ERC, some RCUK, Royal Society and Wellcome Trust).
3) Applications where leverage support is a clear mandatory requirement from the funder(s).
Applications for leveraged studentships are being considered for 2019/20 onwards. Application form is available here.
