a density of 1,200 units and buildings have increased in height. There has been insufficient opportunity to explore concerns and solutions because the proposal is being fast-tracked to a

public hearing with City Council on September 11, 2017.

HDC has concluded that values and concerns of residents are not being acknowledged and acted on. Careful consideration of large site redevelopment in mature neigh-bourhoods and the cumulative impacts of this proposal is required. This application will set a precedent for infill densification along all LRT corridors passing through mature neighbourhoods. For all of these reasons, the HDC is opposing the proposed over-development of the Holyrood Gardens site. SEEECCC Update Southeast Edmonton Early Childhood Community Coalition (SEEECCC) is a vol-unteer group of community members who are passionate and committed to nurturing young children in the community. An area of development that is important for young children is social competence. It includes curiosity about the world, eagerness to try new experiences, knowledge of acceptable public behaviour, to control own behaviour, respect for adult authority, cooperation with others, following rules, and ability to play and work with other children.

You can help your children learn how to be socially competent by:Praising how your children behave, not just the result when they play games or accom-plish a task.• Painting a picture with your child sharing the only brush and taking turns with them.• Giving your child simple choices and asking their opinion about activities.• Encouraging your child and helping them to play with other children.• Pretending you are at school with your child and ask them what others might think or feel.Practicing the essential skill of making eye contact. Make a game of it with your child by having your child try to make eye contact with you while they swing on a swing.

In order for children to learn social skills, it’s important for them to have the opportunity to practice interacting with other children and adults. Set up playdates and get out into the community. For ideas of family friendly, free activities to do with your children check out our SEEECCC events calendar at… www.earlychildhoodedm.ca/events/category/southeast

Back to school safety

Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students aboutsome road safety tips, as streets become more congested, with the return of the school year. Pedestrians and motorists both have an important role to play –road safety is a shared responsibility.

Around school buses• Flashing amber lights mean a bus is

slowing down to stop – motorists should do likewise;

• No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP, when approaching a school bus with activated flashing red lights – unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway from you;

• Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.

Motorists• Avoid talking on cell phones, texting,

or any other behavior that diverts your attention away from driving;

• Give right-of-way to pedestrians who have activated overhead crossing lights, or who are waiting to cross from a street corner;

• Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles - other than those that are parked - in school zones or playground zones, during posted hours.

Pedestrians• Cross only at marked crosswalks, or

street corners that have clearvisibility from all directions;

• Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the street, and keep distractions to a minimum;

• When activating overhead crossing lights, pause before stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions have come to a complete stop;

• Stay within the crosswalk lines until fully clear of the roadway;

• Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop;

• If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing;

• Remember: children learn by observing. By demonstrating safe crossing habits, you can reduce the chances of your child being involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.

Be a Community Park Helper!We can keep our park clean and safe with everyone’s help. Please use the litter bins and encourage others to do so.

Sand on the sidewalk is slippery – if you are feeling ambitious and know that you are going to be handing out at the park for some time while your children play, then feel free to bring a broom and sweep the sidewalks.

It’s great exercise! Thank you to those who have already been helping to keep our park safe and clean!

Also, it is wonderful to see the spray deck being used on warm days – what a great ad-dition it has been to our Park! However, please consider refraining from pressing the spray deck “on sensor” if you or your children are not plan-ning on going into the water on a cooler day.

For health reasons (children sometimes drink it), the wa-ter flowing out of the spray deck is fresh water (not re-cycled). Only press if you’re going in! Thanks!

Capilano Community ParkJune 23 Grand Opening a big hit!Thank you to all those who came out to help us celebrate the Grand Opening of Phase 2 of Capilano Community Park, including all of our special guests! The free BBQ was a smash as several hundred hamburgers and hot dogs were served. Thank you to all our volunteers for helping with running this busy event. And thanks so much to Heather S for leading our grand opening party. We don’t know what we would do without you! The phase 2 project includes a 600m walking path, adult exercise equipment stations, more park benches, a bike bumps course and a community sign. It is the final phase of a six year project, and completes our vision of creating a “Park for All Ages!” The first project phase, completed in 2014, included new playground equipment, a spray deck, additional park benches and tables, and a large picnic shelter. Please visit our beautiful community park this summer and enjoy all the amenities!

Elected officials, CCL board and Suzuki School reps, industry reps and Park com-mittee members, along with local residents, officially open Capilano Community Park at the Phase 2 Grand Opening on Friday June 23.

Cloverdale has its Own BeachBy Paul BunnerRemember the talk a few years ago about the City creating a fake beach in the valley, unconnected to the river? Well, now Clo-verdale has its own, real, beautiful beach.Immediately downstream of the LRT bridge construction site, at the head of the big stony island that rises from the river during nor-mal to low water levels, the massive stone piers built by TransEd to enable bridge construction have altered the river’s flow, causing it to deposit truckloads of sand and creating the biggest, best beach Edmonton has ever had.

Roughly 100 feet long, 30 feet wide and as much as four feet deep, the pristine sand beach is ideal for sunbathing and sand castle building. The shoreline is firm, not mucky, and close to the shore the current is slow enough to make wading and even swimming safe. Further out the current runs harder, and it varies depending on rainfall and releases from the upstream dams, plus there are power boats, so swimming is not recom-mended. But on most days, except perhaps after a big storm washes a lot of grit from City streets into the river, the water is very clean and safe, even if it looks a little silty.

It can be a bit challenging getting down the steep riverbank to the beach, and you should mind the kids closely to make sure they don’t stray too far out into the river where the current runs fast (and put them in life jackets just in case), but Cloverdale Beach probably won’t be there after bridge construction is completed, so it’s an experi-ence not to be missed this summer. And if everybody who uses the beach leaves it as clean or even a little cleaner than they find it, it will be even better.Enjoy!

Family Picnics on Friday Evenings!Fridays at 6pm!

Come and join your neighbours on Fri-day evenings for a picnic. Bring your blanket and your dinner and let’s connect!

Bring the whole family and let’s have some fun! If it looks like rain lets meet in the gazebo. See you on Friday night!

The Cloverdale neighbourhood has been a beehive of activity this sum-mer. New neighbours have moved into the neighbourhood. We’ve said goodbye to others who have moved out of the area. Folks continue to gather on Friday evenings for the “Picnic in the Park” at the Clover-dale Community League (CCL) gazebo to visit and catch up on news and events.

The playground and spray park are filled with laughter and shrieks of excitement from youngsters of all ages. The Valley Line LRT con-struction is ringing in our ears and the latest version of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has made its impact ‘on the hill’. Gardeners are bringing colour and vibrancy to their front yards and the Community Garden has never looked better. Block Connectors are beginning to discover more about what makes Cloverdale tick as they engage neighbours in the Abundant Com-munity initiative. Clearly, there’s a lot going on in Cloverdale and it’s people that make it happen. Thanks to everyone in Cloverdale for truly making Cloverdale “the Village in the Park”!

Camping!July 27-30 was our second an-nual community league camping trip at the beautiful Brazeau Res-ervoir provincial recreation area.

Eight families enjoyed almost perfect weather apart from a heavy rainstorm late Friday night.

The kids had a fantastic time being engineers, building docks from the beach to the water using the abundant driftwood, rocks and mud. And everyone enjoyed socializing around the campfire.

Adult Badminton Adult badminton will start on September 24th, running Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 PM 9:00 PM

This is a social badminton club rather than an intensely competitive club. There are three courts at the school, so a maximum of twelve players can play at one time. We have a rotation system of play, so players do not pick and choose their team mates or opponents.

The club is not equipped to train beginners, but you don’t need a lot of experience at the game to become a member, although there are some experienced and competitive play-ers in our club.

As of September 5, 2017, school zones are in effect around elementary and junior high schools throughout Edmonton. Motorists are required to slow down to 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (08:00 – 16:30) on school days where school zone signs are posted.

Please Help Us Keep Our Park CleanDid you know that a small team of volunteers works very hard to keep our parks clean? They clean up graffiti, empty garbage, clean bath-rooms and other materials left behind from vandalism.

Every day volunteers open and close the outside wash-rooms for our community to use. We are one of the very few leagues who have the privilege of an externally accessible washroom. Last year we were forced to close these washrooms due to van-dalism, but this year we have taken measures to hopefully keep them open this summer.

Please do what YOU can to help us so we can continue to provide these services to you, our com-munity members. If you are having a picnic, party or other outing please clean up after yourself!. Bring extra bags, or request them using our CONTACT form on the web site.

We can’t do this alone and we need to work together as a community so we can all continue to enjoy our playground and spray park!

Mark your calendars: Strathearn Art Walk is Sept. 9The sixth annual Strathearn Art Walk on September 9 promises to be our biggest yet, with more than 200 artists, as well as live music and activities for our youngest artists.

Chair of the Art Walk Committee Jenny McAlister says, “The Strathearn Art Walk has proven to be a very dynamic event. Each year it takes on a bit of a different flavour while still preserving the important aspects of community and art. This year we’re super excited about offering some amazing BC wines to complement our amazing food.”

A free event with activities for the whole family, Strathearn Art Walk takes place Saturday, September 9 from 12 to 7 PM in the park on Strathearn Drive, between 89 and 91 Street.

Join us in the beer garden for performances by Bleached Rag, The Den, Stove Top, Mbira Renaissance, and more.

New Hall Construction Update Good things are happening!

Construction on the new hall is making a visible difference in Silver Heights Park! Notably absent earlier this summer, the spray park is working again thanks to installation of a solar panel by the City of Edmonton.

Finally our hot children can be cooled off again. Since the spray park started up again, it has been full!

T h e s p r a y p a r k had been powered from the old hall’s electrical service. When the hall came down, the power to the spray park also stopped.

The Ci ty’s team worked quickly to engineer and install a solar powered system and get the spray park back in service. The hall foundation and underground utility work is well underway. Taking advantage of good weather, Southwark’s crew and sub-trades have even been working on weekends!

The concrete foundation is complete, and the under-floor plumbing and drainage lines are being installed.

The first steps to install the masonry block making up part of the exterior are also taking place: This block, larger than normal brick, has a dark grey terrazzo-like appearance, and will be attached to the building supported on a galvanized steel framework. In August, you should see walls framed and covered, and roof trusses installed, giving the hall it’s shape before exterior finishes are installed.

Be sure to take a walk through the park and check out the progress. And give the Southwark crew a thumbs up or a shout out!

New Hall FundraisingIn early May 2017, the Strathearn Building Society announced that an anonymous com-munity member had issued a challenge to fel-low neighbours to help boost the fundraising initiative for our new hall.

He had committed to match all donations over $500 received in the month of May and June to a total of $10,000.

Strathearn, we knew you liked a good chal-lenge!

A total of 16 people stepped up and do-nated $14,693 to match our generous community mem-ber’s contribution which means that we added an ad-ditional $24,693 to our new hall fun in 2 months alone.

That’s worth cel-ebrating! Unfor-

tunately, we are not done yet. We are still in need of funds to complete the hall and furnish it!

Please consider giving what you can to the Strathearn Building Society to help us com-pete this important project.

The New Path on Strathearn Drive Community Reactions Big changes are afoot in Strathearn. Significantly, a paved pathway has been built on the parkland adjacent to Strathearn Drive.

We asked a few path users what they thought:

“Love it. Should have been done long ago. It makes me want to walk more.” - Anik (Hollyrood)

“It’s bigger than I expected. It will be interesting to see how it works out. I hope the city clears it over the winter.” - Annette (Strathearn)

“It’s perfect for our kids. A great place for them to practice biking on hills. I’ve run into friends there.” - Erin (Strathearn)

Strathearn Community GardenIf Leah Poetzsch had known how much work was required to start a community garden, she would have plunged in anyway. Leah’s love of shared garden spaces began many years ago when she and her husband, Friedemann, lived in Vic-toria for six months. “Community gardens were everywhere,” she says, “and they were beautiful.” Back in Edmonton, Leah’s interest in community gardens continued to grow as she explored different parts of the city with her young son and daughter. She was particularly drawn to the gardens by the High Level street car railway in Old Strathcona. “That garden is so pic-turesque, tucked in along the rail line, and I remember thinking it would be amazing to grow your own food,” she says.

A resident of Strathearn for 14 years, Leah joined the board of the community league in 2015. While she took on the role of membership coordinator, she talked about her dream of creating a community garden. Two years later, Leah is now spearheading the efforts to establish a shared growing plot for Strathearn residents.Because the proposed spot for the garden is city parkland, the ap-plication process required by the City of Edmonton is extensive and involves a lot of “groundwork” ahead of any actual ground breaking. Poetzsch says that working through the city’s application has made her and fellow committee members think about the ins and outs of what will be needed to create a garden, meet the needs of Strathern locals and keep it running smoothly. While plans have not yet been approved or the details finalized, the hope is that the garden will sit on the land previously occupied by the community hall, directly north of the ice rink. Plots will be available for any interested Strathearn residents.

If you’d like to know more about the garden and have some input into what the space should be, watch for a survey at local spots later in August. You’re also invited to drop by the Strathearn Community Garden table at the Strathearn Art Walk on September 9. And, as always, keep abreast of new developments via the online Strathearn newsletter (www.strathearncommunityleague.org).“I’m hopeful that the most intensive part of the process is behind us,” Leah says, “but, regardless, there’s going to be a Strathearn community garden underway by spring of next year!”
