Roslyn Russell, A/Prof Amalia Di
Iorio, Prof Tim Fry and Prof Lisa
Farrell, were awarded an ARC
Discovery Grant for a three-year
project, “What Women Want:
unravelling the factors underlying
women’s financial decision-making
behaviour”. This project has a total
funding of $195,000.
» Experts in the School of Business
IT and Logistics, Profs Brian Corbitt
and Nilmini Wickramasinghe, Dr
Victor Gekara and A/Prof Prem
Chhetri, contributed their expertise
in a collaborative project, “Ports
Adaptability and Resilience to
Climate Change”. This two-year
project has funding of $578,000
from the National Climate Change
Adaptation Research Facility.
» Dr Victor Gekara (School of
Business IT & Logistics), together
with A/Prof Prem Chhetri (School
of Business IT & Logistics), Prof Peter
Fairbrother (Centre for Governance,
Work and Technologies), Dr Alan
Montague (School of Management)
and Prof Peter Turnbull (Cardiff
University, UK), was awarded $125,000
to undertake a 12-month project on
workforce training and productivity.
» A/Prof Prem Chhetri, Prof Brian
Corbitt and a Business IT &
Logistics research team received a
$60,000 industry grant from REPCO
to evaluate areas of improvement
and identify critical factors for the
successful implementation of a
distribution hub and spoke supply
structure for REPCO.
» Dr Hossein Zadeh from the
School of Business IT & Logistics has
received a US$20,000 prestigious IBM
Faculty Award.

College Research Schemes
Congratulations are extended to College Research
Scheme recipients for Semester 1, 2011.
» CoB Research Readership Scheme
A/Prof Prem Chhetri, Dr Angela Dobele, Dr Eva
Tsahuridu and Dr Larry Li have been successful in
obtaining College Research Readership awards.
This scheme provides funding of up to $20,000 to
assist researchers with a semester release to
conduct an intensive program of research,
publishing and grant application.
» CoB Doctorate Completion Scheme
Grace Wong has been awarded a College
Doctorate Completion Scheme grant. This scheme
will support her in the final stages of her PhD
thesis with a semester release from all teaching
and administrative duties.
» College ECR Publications Scheme
Drs Lynnel Hoare, Foula Kopanidis, Alberto Posso,
Linda Robinson, Warren Staples, Say Yen Teoh,
Hossein Zadeh and Jiaying Zhang have been
awarded College Early Career Researcher (ECR)
Publications Scheme grants.
Research Appointments
» Research Capacity Building Team (RCBT) 2011
(the former RDT)
Profs Tim Fry, Craig Deegan, Lisa Farrell, Roslyn
Russell and Dr Peter Macauley have been
appointed to the Research Capacity Building Team
(RCBT) for 2011 to support and raise the College
research profile to new heights. The New Year will
see some exciting initiatives from this Team – so
stay tuned!
We take this opportunity to thank Profs John Fein
and Supriya Singh for their contribution to the RDT
this year and welcome back Prof Tim Fry to the
new RCBT.
» ARC College of Experts
Prof Peter Fairbrother has been appointed to the
ARC College of Experts until the end of 2013.
Members of the ARC CoE are experts of
international standing drawn from the Australian
research community. The ARC engages them to
provide strategic advice and to play a key role in
the identification of research excellence.

» Vietnam Human Resource Professional Workshop
The School of Management collaboratively hosted
a workshop with the Centre of Management and
Commerce in Vietnam on 30 November and 1
December at the RMIT Vietnam campus.
Experts from the School of Management, Profs
Fang Lee Cooke and Sandra Jones, A/Prof Alan
Nankervis, and Drs Ngan Collins, Simon Fry and
Malcolm Macintosh participated in this workshop.
This successful event opened opportunities to
develop research collaborations, promote research
training and develop links with the Vietnam
business community and universities.
» RMIT Accounting Educators’ Conference 2010
The inaugural RMIT University Accounting Educators’
Conference was held on 15 November. The
conference was well attended, with more than 85
participants from Australian and New Zealand
universities and professional accounting bodies.
Keynote speakers were Prof Alan Sangster, Middlesex
University Business School and visiting Prof at
University of Wales, and Prof Donna Street, Al and
Marcie Mahrt Chair in Accounting at the University of
Dayton and President of the International Association
for Accounting Education and Research.
Thanks to the team at the School of Accounting,
especially Profs Brendan O'Connell and Paul de
Lange and Ms Marita Shelly. This day was a headline
success and is a benchmark for the future.
Recent Events » End of Year HDR Celebration
On 6 December, the College Research Office
invited Research Directors, Supervisors and HDR
students to celebrate the end of a productive
2010. Seventy-five people attended the BBQ lunch
at the green and secluded courtyard of Building
158 in Queen Street.
Prof Brian Corbitt, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor,
Research and Innovation, said “Hard work will be
rewarded and those who put in the hard yards will
see the fruits of their efforts.” He thanked the
Business Research Office and School staff for their
support of the College HDR students and wished
everyone a safe and happy end-of-year break.
» College of Business Inaugural Research Day
More than 45 academics attended the inaugural
College Research Day at Storey Hall on 24
November. The event provided an opportunity to
discuss current research projects and explore new
ideas and collaborations.
Nineteen 3-minute presentations illustrated the
wide range of research activity being undertaken
in the College of Business. Dr Monica Tan and
A/Prof Terry Hallahan from the School of
Economics, Finance & Marketing were rewarded
with Apple iPads for their outstanding
presentations.

» RMIT Professor Shared Research Findings on
eHealth Solutions
Prof Nilmini Wickramasinghe from the School of
Business IT & Logistics was invited to share her
expertise on eHealth solutions at the IBM
Healthcare Executive Dinner on 9 December.
Prof Wickramasinghe led a successful discussion
on the development of a pervasive technology
solution for facilitating chronic disease self care
(Dia Mond project). She also highlighted some
important factors in developing and managing
eHealth solutions.
» Writing for Publications Workshop Series
The Writing for Publications workshops (including
the intensive advance modes) continue to be one
of the most vibrant workshop series organised by
the College.
Facilitated by Carla Taines, attendees are required
to actively participate in writing, presenting and
peer reviewing in group and individual sessions.
Due to popular demand this workshop series will
be offered again in 2011.
» International Symposium on Asia-Pacific
Multinationals, Global Standards and Host
Country Development
On 8 November, the School of Management
hosted an international symposium, “Multinational
firms from and in the Asia-Pacific, global standards
and host country development” at the Research
Lounge.
This one-day symposium brought together world-
leading scholars and policy makers to present their
latest research findings. It provided an important
platform for participants to discuss and debate the
issues surrounding the role of multinational firms
in shaping global standards and host country
development.
Prof Gill Palmer, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic,
RMIT University, delivered the opening address.
Other speakers included high profile international
and national scholars and industry professions.
» Seminar: Women on the Line Revisited
Women+Work Research Cluster of the Centre for
Governance, Work and Technologies invited
Professor Miriam Glucksmann from the University
of Essex to deliver a public seminar “Women on
the Line Revisited” on 27 October in the newly
refurbished and prestigious Emily McPherson
Building.
The seminar provided an opportunity for vigorous
interaction and discussion among Victorian
academics, government representatives and
industry professionals on the impact of the
economic, political and social changes that have
shaped the global world of women’s work.

The Research Grant Seed Fund Symposium will be
held on Monday, 28 February 2011.
At the symposium awardees of the 2010 Research
Grant Seed Fund will discuss their projects, share
their discoveries and outline their plans for future
Category 1 grant applications. We look forward to
having you join us on this day.

Contribute to make a change
Academics are invited to participate in an RMIT
PhD research project investigating the opinions of
academics who are involved in offshore teaching,
as well as those who are not.
Contribute to make a change. Feedback from the
survey may be used to develop an improved policy,
which will incorporate more support from the
organisation for academics. The survey takes about
