We welcome you back to work after a memorable Navruz holiday, with the first issue of our quarterly newsletter of the year. The start of the year was very productive for Tajikistan’s textile and clothing sector as 14 private companies took the beauty of Tajik ornaments and quality products to three of the main European megacities. In this issue, we will introduce the results of our participation at three international trade fairs, in Moscow, Istanbul and Frankfurt, as well as our other activities in supporting the Tajik companies to increase their sales and access to new markets. Dear readers,

I would like to begin by saying Happy Navruz and wishing you every success and happiness for the traditional Tajik New Year!

I take this opportunity, to express my gratitude to our partners from the government agencies and private sector as well as extend my thanks to the Government of Switzerland, to whom we owe the success of our projects during the past decade. The total amount of actual and preliminary contracts that the Tajik delegation negotiated during the International Istanbul Yarn Fair 2017 reached $1.5 million. For the sixth time, Tajikistan exhibited its cotton yarn to a wide range of international buyers at the second biggest yarn fair in the world, held from 2 to 5 February 2017 in the Turkish city. Five Tajik spinning companies “Fayzi Istiqlol – 2011”, “HIMA-Textile”, “Nohid”, “Olim Textile”, and “Vahdat Textile” continued the tradition of Tajik participation at this leading specialized exhibition. “Nohid” visited the fair to find new potential sources of raw materials, while the other four exhibited their products to potential buyers. The International Istanbul Yarn Fair acts as a meeting point for about 8,000 visitors from around 80 countries. Named as “the heart of yarn industry in Eurasia”, the fair exhibits different types of yarn, fiber, textiles machinery, and much more. The fair is an ideal event to meet leading textile producers from the region; to empower own brands in the regional market; to establish new contacts with manufacturers, suppliers, importers, and traders; to become acquainted with market trends, demands and expectations; as well as to explore new products and innovations.

- The trade fair is much busier and more active compared to previous years. Nohid - Our cotton yarn is becoming well known, many textile companies have used our cotton yarn and are satisfied with its quality. We need to increase production volume and consider shipping products by sea to other countries via the Port of Mersin, Turkey. Olim Textile - We were able to acquaint ourselves with new markets and new customers from countries such as Tunisia, Algeria, and Romania, amongst others. I am now confident that our product is competitive in foreign markets. Vahdat Textile - I learned new techniques to prepare and decorate a trade fair exhibition booth. Fayzi Istiqlol – 2011

Around $2 million in preliminary and actual contracts, more than 800 visitors to the booth, and approximately 450 new business contacts – these were the results of participation by the Tajik companies for the eighth time at “Textillegprom”, the biggest specialized industry event in the Commonwealth of Independent States, held from 14 to 17 February 2017 in Moscow.

Since 2011, more than 20 companies from Tajikistan have participated in the fair with the support of ITC. Many of the companies have participated in the fair three times or more and some as many as six times, bringing home contracts worth several hundred to several million dollars. This year the Tajik delegation consisted of the following companies:

The Federal Trade Fair “Textillegprom” is a unique platform to exhibit and view an entire range of textile industry goods, from raw materials and equipment to finished products. The fair serves as a meeting place for wholesale buyers and industry experts. Mr. Armen Zargaryan, ITC’s Programme Coordinator for the Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, says, “Textillegprom attracts exhibitors and buyers from all regions of the Russian Federation, giving a complete picture of the Russian market. So, this fair is a good opportunity for Tajik exporters to research and better understand the current Russian market requirements by interacting with exhibitors and potential buyers from all regions of the Russian Federation”. Ms. Shakhlo Abidjanova, Sales Manager from Olim Textile says, “Participation at this fair provides us with the opportunity to sign contracts with foreign companies. Following the crisis, the Russian market has become more active and demand is seemingly increasing. It is necessary to establish a supply of fabric or dyed yarn to Russian”. The Tajik delegation visited other salons to meet potential trade partners and see new modern technologies and products. The Tajik delegation also attended workshops.

Five Tajik handicraft companies participated in the leading international trade fair for consumer goods – Ambiente, held in Frankfurt, Germany from 10 February to 14 February 2017. For the third consecutive year, the International Trade Centre organized participation for a delegation from Tajikistan at this popular global consumer goods trade fair.

With over 4,700 exhibitors from around 90 countries, Ambiente is considered as a meeting place for about 145,000 trade visitors from 160 countries annually. During the fair, numerous events highlight trending industry topics and offer an ideal stage for networking and dialogue.

The Tajik delegation presented century-old craftsmanship combined with contemporary design, embroidery inspired by ethnic ornaments, semi-precious stone jewellery and decorative shapes, wooden combs and barrettes, hand-knitted wool items, and other artisanal products.

Ms. Nigina Ikromova, Executive Director of the Tajikistan Union of Crafts, says, “We had an exceptional opportunity to find new partners and markets, to explore new modern trends in the world of handicrafts, as well as show the unique eastern beauty of Tajik handicrafts to potential clients. We surprised the fair’s visitors with the beauty of our products. We express our gratitude to ITC and the Swiss Government for providing us with this opportunity to promote our national craftsmanship to the European market”.

Representatives from the Tajik textile and clothing companies benefitted from a workshop on effective wholesales conducted on 15 and16 March 2017 in Dushanbe.

The training workshop was organised and conducted by Natalya Chinyonova, expert and trainer on retail business technologies from the Russian company, Fashion Consulting Group.

During the two-day workshop and the consultations that followed, the Tajik T&C industry leaders learned how to launch their wholesale business, as well as how to how to manage, improve and control it. They were also introduced to stimulation methods for developing and promoting their

wholesale businesses. The training participants also learned how to analyse potential wholesale client databases, and define strategic price formation. The participants were awarded with certificates of completion.
