swing straight back?
• Is the throwing hand swung forward like a pendulum at the same time as the step forward is taken?
• Does the player remember to step forward with the foot opposite to the throwing hand?
follow Through Stage • Is the object released with the palm facing up?
• Is the weight transferred up and over the front foot?

oVer The heDGeGame objective
To throw various objects over the hedge (net) and into the backyard (court) of the other team. When time expires, teams want to have fewer pieces of “garbage” on their side of the hedge than on their opponents’ side.
Skills and Concepts ✜ Overhand throw
Strategies and Tactics ✚ Look for open space on opponents’
side of net. ✚ Make returning objects difficult for
opponent.
equipment ❍ Poles and nets, stopwatch, badminton
shuttles, foam balls, and tennis balls
Set Up ❑ Define the boundaries of the court (can be volleyball or badminton court lines or made to the desired
size with cones).
❑ Each player begins with an object.
Instructions ☛ On a signal from the leader, players throw objects over the net into the other team’s court boundaries. ☛ Players can only pick up one “piece of garbage” (object) at a time. ☛ Players can only hold onto garbage for three seconds before it must be thrown. ☛ The object must stay within the court boundaries. ☛ At the end of the playing time, the number of objects in each court is counted and the team with the
least garbage in their court is the winner.
Variation ❉ Play without a net but instruct players to avoid throwing objects at other players.
Questions for Understanding ? Where did you throw the object to make it difficult for the other team to throw it back? ? how does your body position change if you are trying to throw an object to the back of the court vs.
just over the net?

DroP IT – CaTCh ITGame objective
To do the opposite of what you are told.
Skills and Concepts ✜ Catch a ball

the circle.
☛ The receiver must do the opposite of what he is told to do.
☛ If you were told to “drop it” then you are supposed to catch the object.
☛ If the receiver does the wrong action or is unsuccessful, she switches with the player in the middle.
☛ The winner is the player with the fewest trips to the middle of the circle.
Variation ❉ As a warm-up to this activity, the player in the middle can throw the ball to each person on the circle
and they each practice catching it and tossing it back.
